Estella stared at Helion from across the table where she had placed her hands on the guard duty roster. "You know what Orrik will say as soon as he reaches the south gate after four days."
"He will say I locked up the witnesses," Helion said.
"Worse," Estella said dryly. "The Hawks will claim that Harrow was your man, that you ordered him to pull the sentry so the Vanguard could murder the envoy, and that you hid both Harrow and Tobin behind Silver Aegis spears to keep the Senate inquest from questioning them."
"If I leave them in the garrison stockade, the clerk with the brass thumb-ring will poison their soup before tomorrow night," Helion replied bluntly. "I will not trade two living men's necks for a cleaner argument."
