Day 454. 05:00 hours.
Olympus.
Forbes Park.
The North Wall.
The army did not leave overnight.
Jae-min stood on the north wall at dawn, his dark eyes on the SLEX one kilometer north, the thermal scope showing eleven thousand signatures camped on the frozen highway.
The army had not fled.
The naval officer had spent the night reorganizing, planning, filing three surprises that were no longer surprises.
'Yesterday they were surprises — today they are intelligence, and the commander has the intelligence.' Jae-min filed, his hands on the scarred wall.
The panels were damaged.
The AEGIS armor that had held yesterday was depleted — reactive composite at forty percent on the targeted panels, ceramic thermal shield fractured, energy diffusion matrix overloaded.
The wall would not hold against another sustained assault.
"Haitao." Jae-min murmured, the name that was the weight he had carried since yesterday, the man who had not told Jae-min what the Destruction cost, the man who was gone.
The scorch was below him.
Jae-min did not look at it.
Jae-min had looked at it enough, had put his hand on it yesterday and felt the warmth fade and filed the fading and filed the nothing and moved on because the war did not wait for grief.
Elaine was in the Medical Bay, sedated by Alessia at 22:00 because Elaine had not slept and the baby — Elaine's baby, three months from delivery — needed her to sleep.
Elaine had woken at 04:00 and cried again, and Alessia had held her, and the Medical Bay was the place where grief lived, the grief that was not just the loss of a father but the loss of a father who had burned, the loss that left nothing — not a body, not ash, the nothing that was the hardest thing to mourn.
James Panganiban had not left the wall's base.
James had slept on the frozen ground, the vice captain who had slept at the foot of the wall where his captain had burned, the vice captain who had not eaten and had not drunk and had not moved, sitting on frozen ground at dawn with his back against the AEGIS panel and his eyes on nothing.
'James — the vice captain who has no captain, and I need to tell him I did not know, and telling him I did not know will not fix anything.' Jae-min filed, his dark eyes on the scope.
"Captain." Mei's voice came through the comms from the Command Deck, the analyst who had been on the deck since 03:00. "ARTEMIS shows movement in the army camp. The army is forming. Columns. Not retreating. Forming. The commander is preparing a second assault."
"The commander is preparing." Jae-min confirmed, his dark eyes on the scope.
"Formation analysis." Jae-min pressed.
"The army is reorganizing into three columns instead of one." Mei reported, her fingers pulling up the thermal overlay. "The columns are spreading along a two-kilometer front. The commander is not concentrating force — the commander is dispersing. Hitting every panel simultaneously, not just the north wall. All three walls. At once."
'All three walls — forcing the frames to spread, six across three walls, two per wall, the concentration broken.' Jae-min filed, the captain who was filing the adaptation, the adaptation that was smart.
"Timeline." Jae-min pressed.
"The columns will reach the perimeter in approximately two hours. Estimated assault time: 07:00." Mei reported.
'Two hours — the wall is damaged, the frames are six across three walls, the void disrupts but does not kill, and the army is nine thousand five hundred.' Jae-min filed, the math that said today was harder.
'Olympus will not fall — because I will not let it fall.' Jae-min filed, his jaw tightening.
"Frames to positions." Jae-min commanded. "SAMURAI and GENESIS to the north wall — the north wall is the most damaged. REAPER to the east. DARKNESS to the west. REVOLUTION and SPECTER reserve, mobile between walls. The commander is hitting all three walls simultaneously. We respond with concentration where needed. The void covers all three walls. The void is the constant. The frames are the variable."
"Copy." Five voices confirmed, and the frames moved.
The dawn came gray.
The charcoal sky did not lighten.
The army formed on the SLEX — three columns, nine thousand five hundred men, spreading across a two-kilometer front, the simultaneity that was the commander's adaptation.
The columns began moving at 06:45.
Walking, not running.
The walking that conserved energy, the walking that the hungry used, the walking that was the march's final step.

Day 454. 07:00 hours.
Forbes Park.
All Three Walls.
The army came at dawn.
Three columns.
Nine thousand five hundred men.
Spreading across a two-kilometer front, hitting all three walls simultaneously.
The commander had learned, had adapted, was not repeating yesterday's mistake of concentrating at the north wall.
The north column was three thousand strong.
They carried no ladders.
They carried pickaxes and pry bars — scavenged from abandoned construction sites along the SLEX, the tools that said we are not going over the wall, we are going through it.
'Pickaxes — through the wall, not over. The commander is targeting the damage from yesterday.' Jae-min filed, his dark eyes on the HUD.
"North wall — SAMURAI, flame the pickaxe column. GENESIS holds the void. Do not let them reach the panels." Jae-min commanded through the comms.
"Copy." Mark Jordan confirmed, the Black Hell Flame igniting, the broadsword lighting up — five thousand five hundred degrees.
The SAMURAI swept the north column.
The flame found the first rank and the first rank ceased — men and pickaxes and pry bars becoming ash, the ash that the wind carried north, the ash that fell on the men behind, the warning that said the flame is here.
But the column did not stop.
The column pushed through the ash, the men behind the first rank climbing over what remained, pushing through the flame because the commander had calculated that the flame could not burn all three thousand, that the flame needed fuel and time and could not burn nine thousand five hundred in the time it took them to reach the wall.
'The commander is using the first rank as fuel — burning them to exhaust the flame sweep so the second and third ranks reach the panels.' Jae-min filed, his dark eyes on the HUD, the tactic that was brutal and effective.
The east wall was hit at the same moment.
Three thousand men with pickaxes reaching the east wall's AEGIS panels at 07:05.
Gabby pulsed the REAPER's gravity outward, pinning the first rank to the ground — the first rank that went down and stayed down.
But the second rank climbed over the pinned and reached the panels and began swinging pickaxes at the AEGIS armor.
The pickaxes hit.
Metal on composite, the sound of men with hand tools trying to break military-grade armor — futile and desperate and also working, because the panels were at forty percent and forty percent could not withstand sustained pickaxe strikes.
The reactive composite cracked under the pickaxe heads, the cracks spreading, the ceramic thermal shield breaking apart, the energy diffusion matrix failing.
'East wall panels failing — the wall will breach.' Jae-min filed, his dark eyes on the HUD showing panel integrity dropping, forty becoming thirty, thirty becoming twenty, the number that said the panel would break.
The west wall was the DARKNESS.
Min-joo's shadow specters poured over the panels, fifty shades finding the pickaxe column, taking the first rank in four seconds of screaming and silence.
But fifty specters could not take three thousand.
The second rank climbed over the silence of the first and reached the panels and began swinging.
All three walls.
Pickaxes.
The panels cracking.
The wall failing.
'The wall is failing — all three walls, the frames cannot stop three thousand per wall, the army pushes through everything.' Jae-min filed, his jaw tightening.
"Satellite Link." Jae-min commanded, the captain deploying the next weapon — 1.2 terawatts, the beam that could vaporize the army, the beam that had vaporized the V2 deployment wing.
"Satellite Link activating." Jae-min declared, his hand on the void anchor housing, the void pushing upward, the portal opening — the black-violet slit reaching four hundred kilometers to ARTEMIS in low orbit.
"Portal extension at fifty kilometers. Stable." Lena reported from the GENESIS interface. "Connection to ARTEMIS established."
[Mei]: "ARTEMIS is go. Platform nominal. Cannon charged at one hundred percent. Targeting locked. On your command, Captain." Mei confirmed through the comms.
The beam was ready.
One command and 1.2 terawatts would exit the portal above the army and vaporize nine thousand five hundred men.
Jae-min's finger was on the trigger.
Jae-min did not pull the trigger.
'The beam exits at the army — the army is at the wall, the beam's path includes the wall and the mansion and the one hundred eighty-seven. The beam destroys everything. I cannot use a weapon that destroys everything to protect the thing that everything includes.' Jae-min filed, his finger on the trigger, his finger not pulling the trigger.
"Satellite Link, stand down." Jae-min commanded.
"Captain?" Mark Jordan questioned from the SAMURAI.
"The beam would destroy the wall and the mansion — the army is at the wall, the beam's path includes everything behind it. The beam is too much. We find another way." Jae-min explained, his voice flat.
'Another way — the void opens a portal anywhere. Behind the army. The beam exits behind the army, hits the ground, cuts the retreat. The army is trapped between the wall and the beam.' Jae-min filed, his dark eyes on the HUD.
"Lena — redirect the portal. Not at the army. Behind the army. Five hundred meters north of the wall. The beam exits behind the army, hits the ground, cuts the retreat." Jae-min commanded.
"Redirecting." Lena confirmed, her fingers on the interface, the portal shifting, the void anchor repositioning, the black-violet slit moving from above the army to behind it.
"Portal repositioned. Five hundred meters north. Behind the army. Beam path is clear of the wall and the mansion." Lena confirmed.
"ARTEMIS, fire." Jae-min commanded.
The beam fired.
1.2 terawatts of ionized particles routed through the void portal, through the four-hundred-kilometer corridor, exiting the portal five hundred meters behind the army, hitting the ground — the SLEX, the frozen highway — vaporizing the asphalt and the frozen earth and the snow into plasma.
A column of white-blue light, fifty meters wide and one hundred meters tall, the wall of fire behind the army, the wall that cut the retreat, the wall that said you cannot go back.
The army saw the fire.
The army saw the column of plasma behind them.
The army understood — the retreat was gone, the highway was gone, the way back was gone, the only way was forward, and forward was the wall, and the wall was the frames, and the frames were the weapons that had killed fifteen hundred men yesterday and were killing more today.
The army broke.
Not the coordination-break of the void.
Not the terror-break of the burning.
The break that came from being trapped — the break that said there is nowhere to go, the despair that said we are between the wall and the fire and the wall has frames and the fire has nothing, and the frames burn and press and take, and the fire erases, and we are between them.
The men dropped their pickaxes.
The men dropped their rifles.
The men dropped to their knees.
The men who had been swinging and shooting and climbing and pushing — dropped, the collapse that said we are done.
'They are kneeling — the army is kneeling, the war is over.' Jae-min filed, his dark eyes on the HUD showing nine thousand thermal signatures on their knees between the wall and the plasma column.
"Hold fire." Jae-min commanded, his voice low, the captain giving the order that said stop, the order that said the frames hold and the void holds and the beam holds and the army kneels and the war is over.
"Hold fire." Five voices confirmed, and the frames held — the Black Hell Flame extinguishing, the gravity releasing, the shadow specters returning, the frames standing above the kneeling army, twenty-five-foot knights that were weapons and were now guards.
The war was over.
The wall held.
The frames held.
The void held.
The beam held.
The fortress held.
The children were alive.
The one hundred eighty-seven were alive.
The army was kneeling.
The war was over.
And Haitao was still gone.
And Elaine was still crying.
And James was still at the base of the wall.
And the scorch was still on the panel.
And the war was over.
'The victory that is not a victory but a survival — bought with a wall and six frames and a void and a beam and a man who burned.' Jae-min filed, his dark eyes on the army kneeling below, the captain who was filing the cost, the cost that was the war, the war that was over.

Day 454. 14:00 hours.
Olympus.
Forbes Park.
The North Wall.
The army knelt for six hours.
The frames stood above them for six hours.
The void hummed for six hours.
The beam's plasma column burned behind the army for six hours — 1.2 terawatts that had cut the SLEX, the column of fire that was the wall behind the army, hotter than the SAMURAI's flame, a wall that would not cool for days.
Navarro surrendered at 14:00.
There was no flag, no document, no ceremony.
Navarro walked to the wall with his hands raised and his son beside him, his gray beard frost-covered, his dark eyes on the frames above him.
"I surrender my forces." Navarro declared, his voice flat, the voice that was not the commander's but the man's.
"Accepted." Jae-min confirmed from the GENESIS, his dark eyes on the commander below.
The cost was counted.
Wall team: nineteen dead, thirty-one wounded.
Nineteen Olympus residents who had been trained by Rico, who had fought because the fortress was theirs, who had been shot by rifles and hit by pickaxes and caught in the crossfire.
Frame casualties: none.
All six frames intact.
Koko reported GENESIS at ninety-four percent operational.
The void anchor had been pushed hard — frequency sustained for six hours, the anchor showing wear that Koko flagged and that Aiko would need to address.
Civilian casualties: none.
The one hundred eighty-seven were alive.
The children in the bunker were alive.
The pregnant women in the Medical Bay were alive.
Jin was alive, forty-seven days from arrival.
Army casualties: approximately three thousand five hundred dead over two days.
Five thousand eight hundred captured.
Two hundred fled into the white during the chaos.
And Haitao Bian.
Gone.
The man who had erased five thousand men in sixty seconds on the first day, the man who had become a star and then become nothing, the man who had left a scorch on the panel and a daughter screaming and a vice captain weeping and a captain who carried the guilt.
'I did not know — you did not tell me, the Destruction burns, I thought I was saving you, I killed you.' Jae-min filed, his dark eyes on the scorch, the only evidence, the mark that was the cost.
Elaine was sedated.
Alessia had sedated her again at 08:00 when the second assault began, and Elaine had tried to leave the Medical Bay — the daughter who had wanted to go to the wall, to be where her father had burned, held back by Alessia because the baby needed her still and the war needed her inside and conscious grief in a war zone was a liability, and Alessia was the doctor.
James Panganiban had been brought inside.
Paolo and Victor had carried him from the wall's base; the vice captain, who had not moved since yesterday, was carried to the Medical Bay and set on a bed.
James was not weeping anymore but was not speaking either — the state that grief produces when it has passed through weeping and through silence and arrived at the state that is just being, the being that is the aftermath.
The frames stood down.
The pilots climbed out.
The frames returned to their berths.
The wall was scarred but standing. The panels were damaged but holding.
The void anchor was worn but functional.
The fortress was intact.
Jae-min climbed out of the GENESIS.
He stood on the GENESIS's shoulder and looked at the wall, at the scorch, at the army kneeling below, at the plasma column burning behind the army, at the charcoal sky.
Everything was the war that was over, and the war that was over was the war that had cost him Haitao.
'Hold — hold the war, hold the cost, hold the grief, hold the guilt, hold the one hundred eighty-seven, hold the children, hold Jin, hold Alessia, hold Elaine, hold James, hold the scorch.' Jae-min filed, his dark eyes on the wall, his hands on the GENESIS, the captain who was holding everything because holding was all he did.
The war was over.
Olympus held.
And the holding continued.

Day 454. 14:00 hours.
Mount Changbai.
The Phantom Whisper Hall.
The Stone Corridor.
Soyul stopped in the corridor.
Her violet eyes went wide.
Her hand found the stone wall — the wall that was warm, the wall that was the mountain, the mountain that had carried a pulse, a pulse that was not the barrier's and not the formation masters' and not the geothermal vents'.
A pulse that was the void.
Her son's void.
The blood had expressed.
The Cheon had expressed.
Jae-min had the void — the door, the frequency, the kill — and he did not know what it was, did not know it was the Cheon, did not know what the void meant. But the void was there, and the void was real, and the void had pulsed through the mountain's formation barrier like a heartbeat through a wall.
'Jae-min — the void. He has the void. The blood expressed. My son is Cheon. My son is fighting. I felt him through the mountain.' Soyul filed, her hand on the wall, her violet eyes on the stone, the mother who had felt her son through a mountain, the mother who was coming, the mother who was bringing her children home.
The war was over at Olympus.
And in the mountain, the princess felt the void and knew her son was alive.
And the holding continued.
