The afternoon shadows stretched long and thin across the training yard as the final bell of the fifth hour chimed from the central cathedral tower.
Hajin stood beside the weapon rack, watching as Cassie, Jonas, and Toby wiped their brow and gathered their blunted practice gear.
With his left hand, Hajin unhooked the promised leather coin purse and placed it directly onto the flat top of Jonas's practice shield where everyone could see the crowns in the open sunlight.
"Fifteen royal crowns, paid in full as promised under our contract," he said, nodding toward the three mercenaries.
Cassie opened the purse strings, letting the royal gold coins gleam in the fading amber light before securing the pouch firmly to her belt.
"Every coin is accounted for, and our squad appreciates the fair terms and clean conduct," Cassie replied, bowing her head with honest mercenary gratitude.
