Chapter 88 - THE SILENT BAZAAR

Their pace was agonizingly slow, dragged down by the crushing, inescapable realization that they were trapped within an infinite spatial loop. Every path they took only led them back into themselves.

Their only remaining thread of hope was to push forward toward the monolithic castle looming in the distance, praying it held the anchor point to break the curse. Yet, common sense screamed that they shouldn't be eager to approach it. Whatever god-forsaken entity had warped this reality around them was undoubtedly waiting at the center of the labyrinth.

Reo could feel the dread gnawing at his bones. Every scrape of stone, every hollow echo in the dark alleys set his nerves on fire. *How I wish Luke was awake,* he thought bitterly. Luke's refined mana sense and tactical intuition would have mapped a way through this nightmare hours ago.

Fulfilling the immediate need for shelter, Reo led the exhausted group into a thoroughly dilapidated building. They had long since abandoned any lingering curiosity about pristine houses; good-looking architecture in this city only meant a trap.

Once settled inside the ruined shell of a shop, Azula set to work. She reached out, taking a stabilized sphere-vine conjured by Silvia to serve as a makeshift physical anchor, and began frantically carving tracking and scouting runes across its surface. Because ambient mana was so thin and heavily suppressed here, there wasn't nearly enough energy to power a high-grade array. Azula had to make do with a cheap, jury-rigged variant of the original design.

With a faint hum, the vine-sphere lifted off the ground, hovering wobbly in the air.

Azula guided it with subtle hand gestures, directing it out through a shattered window toward the deserted street below. The sphere darted forward, clumsily crashing through the window of an opposite building, bouncing off a wall, and careening down the diagonal alleyway.

Back in the room, a secondary rune carved into the stone floor flickered to life, projecting a grainy, real-time visual feed of the street the sphere was patrolling.

"Clear. No visible threats or skin-walkers," Azula reported, her voice tight with fatigue.

Maya adjusted her leather gloves and slid down to sit heavily against the back wall. She was bone-tired. In fact, they were all running on fumes. If her internal clock was right, they had spent nearly two full days pushing through this purgatory without proper sleep, and she would have traded her entire dimensional ring for a freezing cold drink.

At the far end of the room, Luke lay fast asleep, trapped in his unnatural, heavy stupor.

True to her nature, Ingis stood vigil over her master like an unyielding statue. Whenever they weren't on the move, she locked herself into her imposing, full-plate Tatrium knight form to guard the perimeter; whenever they traveled, she reverted to her majestic phoenix shape to carry his unconscious body safely across the terrain.

"Let's rest for now," Reo finally said, voicing the thought that was heavy on everyone's minds.

To be fair, they didn't even need to hear the command. Silvia and Lyra had already slumped against each other, fast asleep before he even finished the sentence. Reo glanced down at Silvia, his expression softening as he gently brushed a stray lock of silver hair away from her cheek. Having her here, fighting by his side, was the primary anchor keeping him from losing his mind in this abyss.

"Relax, Azula. You need to sleep too," Reo murmured, turning to the stoic girl. "Alpha will keep watch for the first half of the night. We have to conserve whatever strength we have left."

Azula shot him a skeptical, silent look, but she didn't argue. Within minutes, exhaustion claimed her as well, her head dropping back against her pack.

Only Ingis remained awake, an unblinking guardian standing silently in the deadly, shadow-drenched night.

### The Commercial District

Lyra was the first to rouse as the pale, bruised twilight filtered through the ruined windows. She moved with deliberate care, making sure not to stir the others as she climbed to her feet.

Her gaze drifted toward where Luke lay motionless on the stone. Hesitating, she took a quiet step forward and reached her hand out toward him, curious if the magical sleep had broken.

*CREAK.*

Ingis's heavy Tatrium armor shifted just an inch, a metallic warning echoing in the quiet room.

Lyra immediately pulled her hand back, exhaling a quiet breath, and turned away to begin waking the rest of the team. Despite the lingering heaviness in their bones, the sleep had done its job; they were sharper and more coordinated than they had been the day before.

Packing their minimal gear, they stepped back out onto the desolate street.

As they walked, the decaying residential blocks slowly gave way to a massive, sprawling grid of wide stone avenues, weathered storefronts, and collapsed awnings.

They had arrived at the **commercial district** of the ruined city.

Up ahead, rising over the jagged rooftops, the silhouette of the colossal castle looked noticeably larger, casting a long, oppressive shadow over the empty plazas.

Not a single soul stirred. The eerie, suffocating silence of the abandoned bazaar wrapped around them, instantly driving the entire team onto maximum, hair-trigger alert.
