Chapter 84 - ETERNAL SPRING

Luke tucked the glowing core away into his dimensional ring with a swift motion. The ring was uniquely encrypted, tethered directly to a secure subspace vault that only he and Zayne possessed the clearance to access.

"We'll make camp and rest here for a bit. Lyra is on watch duty this time," Luke instructed, his voice carrying an edge of lingering fatigue.

"Finally," Reo groaned, stretching his arms over his head. He flashed a grin at the mage. "Hey, Maya? Do you mind cooking up another batch of your hot broth for us?"

"I was actually planning on it," Maya replied, summoning her storage crate with a flick of her wrist. She grimaced, casting a distasteful look at the charred, massive vine-monster slumped by the fountain. "Though... after fighting *that*, I don't think I want to look at any vegetables for a long time. Stick to dried meat."

She laughed softly, tossing a seasoned strip of roasted meat straight to Reo, who caught it out of the air with a grin. She tossed a similar stake to the rest of the team.

Luke chewed slowly on his meat, but as he did, a strange, unnatural drowsiness began to drag at his eyelids. It wasn't the healthy, heavy tiredness of a long day's march; it felt deep, synthetic, and suffocating, as if a thick fog was slowly rolling into his consciousness.

Mid-bite, Silvia walked over to him. She had slipped out of her combat armor, now wearing a loose, flowing lace tunic that fluttered softly in the subterranean breeze. Her silver hair caught the dim light of the distant star.

"I feel completely coated in grime and ash," Silvia said, looking down at her clothes before meeting Luke's eyes. "I would really appreciate it if I could wash up."

Luke paused, the meat still half-chewed in his mouth. He blinked, momentarily wondering why she was reporting this directly to him, before the realization hit: among the team, he was the only one with refined mastery over water-manipulation spells. Naturally, they viewed him as an eternal, walking spring.

"Oh. Right," Luke mumbled after a brief, tired hesitation.

He raised his hand. A crackle of earth mana split the stone floor, rising upward to shape itself into a clean, waist-high stone basin. Luke hovered his palm over the hollow, channeling a steady, purified stream of water until the basin brimmed to the top.

Silvia smiled gratefully, using a gentle current of wind to lift and carry the water safely toward a secluded spot.

"Ingis, keep watch over her," Luke muttered mentally.

The towering knight instantly dissolved into a burst of red light, reforming into a tiny, fiery chick. The bird fluttered up, perched itself atop the roof of a nearby dilapidated building a safe distance from the rest of the camp, and began silently scanning the shadows.

Minutes later, Silvia returned, looking completely refreshed, the faint, clean fragrance of spring water cutting through the stagnant air of the ruins.

Seeing that her request had gone smoothly, the rest of the team immediately bombarded Luke with the same demand. For the next several strenuous minutes, Luke played human plumbing, conjuring basins and channeling water until every member of the squad had freshened up.

By the time he finished the last basin, the strange dizziness struck with the force of a tidal wave.

It wasn't physical exhaustion anymore. It was an alluring, magnetic pull—deep, rhythmic, and hypnotic—as if the dead residents of the city were directly whispering to him from the dark, inviting him into an eternal, dreamless slumber.

*Silvia,* Luke thought, his legs suddenly turning to lead. He staggered blindly to his feet.

Silvia turned around just in time, dropping her towel as she saw him listing sideways. "Luke? What's wrong?"

Luke stumbled forward, catching himself against her arm. His vision spun wildly, the stone ground tilting at impossible angles. "Something... something isn't right. My head... the whole place is spinning..."

"Luke!" Silvia dropped her gear, wrapping her arms around him to keep him from collapsing. Her voice hitched as his words slurred into an incoherent, abstract murmur.

His eyes rolled back, and his entire body went completely limp, slumping heavily against her shoulder.

"Luke! Hey, wake up!" Silvia shook him frantically, patting his cheek. When his head only lolled back unresponsively, pure panic spiked in her chest. *"Luke!"* she screamed at the top of her lungs.

Azula was the first to materialize from the shadows, her daggers drawn. "Silvia? What—?"

"He won't wake up! Something's wrong with him!" Silvia yelled, her voice cracking with terror as she lowered Luke gently to the stone floor.

Azula dropped to her knees, her face hardening into an analytical mask as she pressed two fingers firmly against Luke's carotid artery. "What happened to him?" she demanded, her voice sharp.

"He just stood up, and then... he collapsed out of nowhere!" Silvia cried.

The rest of the team rushed over, dropping their rations as they crowded around the fallen commander. Minutes ticked by in agonizing silence, but no matter what Azula or the others tried, Luke remained locked in a profound, deathlike stupor.

"We can't move forward without him," Lyra said, her voice trembling as she looked out over the dark, sprawling ruins. "Trying to navigate this maze blind is absolute suicide."

"Then we head back," Reo stepped forward. As the only other male combatant present—and with Luke completely incapacitated—he instinctively forced himself into the leadership vacuum, locking down his panic to keep the group steady.

They didn't waste another second. They packed their gear, shoving everything back into their dimensional rings with frantic speed.

Azula carefully hoisted Luke's heavy frame onto Ingis, using heavy-duty straps to secure him tightly across the phoenix's back so he wouldn't slip during transit. Ingis forcibly reverted to her true, majestic phoenix form, blazing with a protective, warm aura.

Without looking back, the strike team began a hurried, tense march back toward the massive iron gate they had entered through hours ago.

They walked in silence for miles, the oppressive dark closing in around them like a physical wall. But after nearly an hour of steady movement, Reo suddenly raised a hand, signaling a dead stop.

Something was wrong. The geometry of the street didn't match their mental map.

Reo signaled Alpha forward, sending the shadow panther scouting into the gloom ahead. The sleek feline melted into the shadows and vanished down a side corridor.

They stood in breathless tension, waiting for the all-clear.

A few moments later, the sound of light, familiar paw-steps echoed from behind them—coming from the *opposite* direction of the path they had just retreated from.

Reo whipped around, brandishing his blades, while the rest of the team instantly formed a defensive circle, weapons raised.

They froze in absolute horror.

Alpha came trotting out of the dark alley behind them—arriving from the exact path they had just walked down, as if they had simply looped in a massive circle without ever moving forward.

"No way..." Lyra whispered, the color completely draining from her face.

The realization hit them like a physical blow: *The spatial distortion of the city had locked them in. They couldn't leave.*

Reo swallowed hard, fighting down the rising panic threatening to tear his composure apart. He had to be the cool-headed one now. If backtracking was a closed loop, then the only variable left was forward.

"Since we can't leave... our only option is to head for the castle," Reo declared, his voice tight but resolute.

He turned slowly, looking out across the vast, dark expanse toward the jagged silhouette of the distant fortress looming against the cavern roof.

As he stared at it, a cold, prickling sensation crawled up the back of his neck. Deep down, he couldn't shake the terrifying impression that the dark, monolithic castle was actively staring back down at them—or was he just losing his mind?
