Chapter 76 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

The Mask was cold.

Colder than the surrounding stone, colder even than the dead air rotting in the heart of Gorgoroth.

The exact second Bani's abomination-hand closed around it, the artifact *moved*. It wasn't solid metal or cured leather. It flowed like viscous, midnight ink poured uphill, crawling relentlessly up his arm, over his gray and elongated fingers, and wrapping tightly around his wrist.

The skin-walker pinned to the wall let out a desperate shriek, but the sound abruptly died before it could even leave its throat. The wall-runes swallowed the noise whole.

Bani tried to yank his arm back. Far too late.

The Mask lunged for his face.

He had been wearing a stolen face—thin, gray, completely inhuman. The Mask didn't care about cosmetic alterations.

It fused.

Not over his skin. *Into* it.

Shadow poured straight into the micro-cracks of the false hide and deep into his real flesh beneath, sinking into his pores, his eyes, and the hollow of his mouth. For one agonizing, eternity-stretching second, Bani felt himself being entirely unmade, every single nerve stripped raw by an invisible file.

Then, it stopped.

And the *mask resting on the altar seamlessly merged with the one now anchored to his face*.

Zero seams. Zero edges. It was simply *him* now. Black, featureless, and liquid-smooth. It breathed rhythmically when he breathed. It aggressively drank the light around him.

The chamber plunged into silence.

Not just quiet. Absolute, suffocating *silence*.

The drip of water completely stopped. The low, electric hum of the skin-walker stopped. Even the panicked thumping of his own blood in his ears vanished.

Bani staggered backward.

The world aggressively tilted sideways.

Visions slammed into his consciousness with the subtlety of a freight train. These weren't memories; they were itemized *debts*.

He saw Gorgoroth at the dizzying peak of its empire. A civilization created in and of an ancient being.

*"Where is the payment to be offered."* an eriee voice whispered

The King had given the Mask. Traded it. And the entire city promptly vanished from history, from prophecy, and from the observation decks of heaven.

But silence always carried an extortionate interest rate.

Every single generation, the Mask demanded compound interest: a life, a voice, a proper name. When the citizens eventually ran out of neighbors to sacrifice, the city cannibalized itself. The statues had been hollowed out because the unfortunate souls inside them had already been *fully paid*.

And the Mask... it remembered the face it was promised, Bani's.

The pinned skin-walker suddenly tore itself free with a wet, tearing sound and lunged forward.

Bani didn't waste time thinking. He simply *moved*.

His body no longer possessed clumsy physical weight; it was pure absence given momentum. He sidestepped with effortless grace, and his twin daggers—now painted in absolute black and humming with a heavily suppressed, crimson frequency—cut cleanly through the creature's neck.

No blood sprayed across the floor. Only fine, drifting ash.

The abomination collapsed into a pathetic pile of dust.

Instantly, the jagged runes across the chamber walls *lit up*.

They didn't glow with warm, comforting light. They blazed with concentrated darkness, drinking every lingering shadow in the room and violently throwing it back at him.

A layered voice that wasn't a voice echoed directly inside his new mask:

"Watcher. The debt is officially acknowledged. The contract completed."

Bani's hands trembled. He could feel it now. The Mask was never meant to be a simple magical tool. It was a *throne*.

And the previous king had been sitting in it for a thousand years, waiting from the void.

From far above, traveling down through a vertical mile of solid stone, he heard it:

*DONG.*

*DONG.*

*DONG.*

Three heavy strikes.

The bell that shouldn't exist was ringing.

And from every twisting tunnel, every dark crack, and every abandoned corner of Gorgoroth came the synchronized sound of footsteps.

Dozens of them. Hundreds.

The skin-walkers were coming back. But they weren't here to hunt him anymore.

They were coming to *kneel*.

Because the Mask had finally chosen its vessel. And a brand-new King of Silence had just checked into the ruins.

Bani pressed a trembling hand against his face. The black surface remained smooth, entirely lacking a mouth.

Yet, when he thought the words, they projected outward anyway, carried smoothly on the absolute absence of sound:

*"I am not your king."*

The wall-runes pulsed once in agreement.

And answered back:

**"Payment shall not refute it's position."**

Outside the heavy chamber door, the massive vanguard of skin-walkers lowered their faceless heads to the stone floor.

Bani looked down at his blades. They were no longer stained crimson; they were the color of a shadow that had deliberately forgotten what light looked like.

He had successfully escaped the chaotic soul-worlds just to die miserably in a forgotten desert.

Instead, he had accidentally inherited a dead kingdom, as an ancient god's compounding payment, and a magical face-shield that categorically refused to come off.

*"Fine,"* he thought, and the Mask carried the thought like a lethal whisper through the ancient stones.

He turned on his heel and walked calmly toward the sound of kneeling monsters.

The King of Silence was officially on the clock.
