Chapter 72 - ELIXIR WORM

The calendar pages had turned four agonizing times since the world shattered, yet for the inhabitants of the Bastion, time had frozen completely on that blood-soaked night. Thirty days. Exactly one month had crawled by like a bleeding shadow, suffocating every corner of the citadel with a grief so profound it felt tangible. The air itself seemed heavy, thick with the unspent echoes of a battle that had fundamentally broken the sky above them.

In the quiet sanctuary of the upper chambers, Kyle lay like a fallen monument. The silver-haired warrior, whose very presence once commanded the tempest, was now a prisoner of a terrifying stillness. His chest rose and fell in agonizingly slow, shallow rhythms, tethered to this world by a thread so thin it threatened to snap with every passing breeze.

Beside the bed stood Olivia, her eyes hollowed by weeks of relentless tears, her trembling hand occasionally stroking the tiny feline's dark fur to find a fragile, freezing comfort. Every breath Kyle took was a battle they fought alongside him in suffocating silence.

Far across the continent, hidden away within the obsidian halls of the obsidian abyss, a very different kind of vigil was failing.

The throne room of the Demon King burned with sickly, violet flames that cast elongated, grotesque shadows across the skull-paved floor. Upon the high throne sat Albatron, the Demon King, his massive frame radiating an aura of suffocating menace. Kneeling before the dais was Bezubeel, harmlessly looking demon general who had narrowly managed to drag Vilthrax's broken body back from the jaws of absolute destruction a month ago.

"Speak, Bezubeel," Albatron's voice rumbled like grinding tectonic plates, echoing off the dark walls. "Report on our greatest champion. Is his constitution holding?"

Bezubeel lowered his horned head, his hand adjusting his spectacles, his voice carried away calmly. "It is failing, My Liege. The backlash from his defeat was far more catastrophic than we anticipated. Vilthrax's core is fracturing, his soul damaged. His blood runs black and sluggish, and every hour he slips closer to the permanent void. The dark priests have tried everything—sacrificial souls, shadow-infusions, blood-runes. None of it touches the rot. If we do not act immediately, Vilthrax will die before the next moon."

A heavy, murderous silence fell over the throne room. Albatron's crimson eyes narrowed into slits of pure fury. "He cannot die. Not now." His voice echoed with undying authority.

Before the Demon King could issue a decree, the air in the center of the chamber warped violently. The violet flames snuffed out instantly, replaced by a blinding, sickly chartreuse light. From the rift stepped an Oracle—a spectral, multi-faced entity draped in floating silk veils that whispered ancient secrets of fate and ruin.

"You seek a salvation that lies hidden from ordinary sight," the Oracle chanted, its many mouths speaking in unison. "The rot within the general is absolute, curable only by a primordial life force. You must harvest the blood of the Elixir Worm."

Albatron leaned forward, gripping the arms of his throne. "Where does this creature dwell?"

"Deep within the forgotten, cursed catacombs of the **Gorgoroth Ruins**," the Oracle replied, its form beginning to dissolve back into the ether. "A labyrinth of ancient traps and ravenous beasts. Send an Archmage Demon General down to seize it, or watch your champion turn to ash."

The rift vanished, leaving the throne room back in its dim, violet glow. Albatron locked eyes with Bezubeel. "You heard the Oracle. Gather an expeditionary force. Retrieve the Elixir Worm from the Gorgoroth Ruins, and save Vilthrax. Failure is not an option."

Back at the Bastion, far away from the demonic plotting and entirely unaware that the enemy was already making moves toward the subterranean depths, the training grounds were a storm of unrelenting violence. Zayne stood atop a crumbling stone pillar, his arms crossed over his chest, watching the chaotic ballet of preparation below. He knew trouble was brewing on the surface, but he had no inkling that a demon expedition had already been dispatched toward the ancient ruins.

"Keep your footing, Luke! You're letting your guard drop on your left!" Vaygar's gravelly, rumbling voice echoed through the damp air.

The formidable feline beast, sleek gray scales catching the pale torchlight with an iridescent shimmer, shifted the weight of his two heavy horns as he watched the young human push himself past the breaking point.

Luke stood in the center of the ring, drenched in sweat, his natural silver hair plastered to his forehead. Beneath the grime, his eyes burned with a terrifying, hollow intensity. He swung his blade with reckless, desperate fury, channeling every ounce of his remaining strength into the strikes. Every muscle screamed, but his mind—sharpened by guilt over Kyle's unyielding slumber—refused to let him stop.

With a sharp intake of breath, Luke willed the ancient transformation to take hold. In a flash of blinding luminescence, his golden hair dissolved into a dazzling, ethereal crown of pure white streaked with veins of vibrant, living green. The sacred armor of *Aethelgard's Mantle* manifested around him, humming with a divine, terrifying frequency that made the very stones beneath his boots crack.

Across the sprawling courtyard, Ingis moved with a fluid, terrifying grace that left shimmering afterimages in the damp air. She had finally achieved complete synchronization with her battle-armor, the ancient metal plates morphing in seamless tandem with every flex of her muscles. She parried a volley of magically reinforced wind-blades effortlessly, her face a mask of cold, lethal focus.

Zayne leaped down from his pillar, landing with absolute silence. He surveyed the chosen strike team he had assembled to accompany Luke on their upcoming mission: Azula, Reo, Silvia, Lyra, Maya, and a mysterious new character shrouded in travel cloaks who kept entirely to himself.

"Listen up!" Zayne called out, cutting through the sounds of clashing steel. "You are all heading out soon. You need to learn how to move and fight as a singular unit. Take this time now to get accustomed to each other's battle styles."

The team immediately shifted into a sparring formation to test their coordination.

Silvia stepped forward, her hands glowing with emerald light as she snapped her fingers. Instantly, thick, razor-sharp vines burst from the training ground floor, weaving together into a dense barrier while a controlled, shrieking gale of wind swirled around the perimeter, ready to shred incoming projectiles.

"My vines will lock down their movement, and my wind will dictate the battlefield," Silvia called out, glancing over at Reo. "Don't get caught in the thorns, shadow-walker." she teased

Reo gave a faint, chilling smirk. In the blink of an eye, his physical body completely vanished into thin air. There was no sound, only the sudden drop in temperature as his presence shifted. Moments later, a dense, swirling aura of grey mana materialized near the back of the training yard, moving at unnatural, blinding speed before he flickered back into view, his daggers resting lightly against Maya's throat before she could even raise her hands.

"Speed and invisibility," Reo murmured smoothly, slipping his blades back into their sheaths. "My mana aura will track targets in the dark. Just make sure you don't hit my afterimages."

Azula, Maya, and Lyra quickly fell into sync, adjusting their ranged elemental attacks to weave seamlessly through the gaps in Silvia's wind-currents. They spent hours drilling relentlessly, trading notes, ironed out the flaws in their formations, and learning how to trust the warrior fighting beside them. They forge themselves into weapons through sheer, determination and unyielding resolve.

While Luke and his companions trained relentlessly above, miles away in the damp, twisting underground cave systems of the Gorgoroth Ruins, a solitary figure operated in absolute, terrifying isolation.
