Chapter 61 - ANOMALY

The heavy, suffocating air inside the subterranean strategy room of the main keep seemed to press down on the stone walls. At the head of the long obsidian table stood Zayne's trusted female secretary, a sharp-eyed woman with silver-rimmed glasses and a posture of unyielding efficiency named **Lyra**. As the legendary pillars of the *Vanguard of the Silver Eclipse* took their seats, Lyra stepped forward, tapping a holographic projection of the capital's surrounding topography.

"Let us begin," Lyra announced, her voice echoing crisp and clear across the vaulted chamber. "As you are aware, recent intelligence dictates a severe escalation in security threats. Kyle, who mysteriously vanished to gods-know-where, returned grievously injured alongside an unidentified, high-threat foreign operative. Simultaneously, Luke successfully located a long-lost relictomb belonging to the great August Lucas. Through a brutal set of trials orchestrated by August's bonded phantom—a fragment of the ancient sovereign Kaizer—he managed to survive and claim a legendary weapon."

A low murmur rippled through the table of titans at the mention of August's relictomb.

"Worse still," Lyra continued, sliding a second map forward highlighting the northern sector, "demons have been systematically smuggled into the heart of the capital under our very noses. They have now established a full encampment at the edge of the Forest of Alduir, currently massing and awaiting a command to strike."

Before Lyra could elaborate further, Zayne raised a single hand, signaling her to stop. "From what we have learned—"

*Creeeeak.*

The heavy iron-reinforced doors of the strategy room swung open. **Duncan** stepped across the threshold, his imposing, battle-scarred frame cutting a sharp silhouette as he offered a lazy, unapologetic grin. "Am I late?" he asked, casually adjusting his collar.

Zayne didn't even bat an eye, a faint, welcoming smirk touching his lips. "You're most welcome here, Duncan. Take a seat."

Duncan strode forward, sliding into an open chair directly beside Cerci Lucas, while his sharp, tactical assistant, **Maya**—a woman with ice-blue hair and eyes that radiated a chilling, analytical focus—quietly stepped up to stand right behind him.

Zayne stood up, leaning over the table as his golden eyes swept across the room. "The demons are set to attack a week from now based on our analysis, but we won't wait for them to make the first move. By the end of today, we will have our forces gathered for a counter-attack tomorrow. Aston, send a dispatch for immediate recon to observe the demons' activity and keep us updated."

Turning his gaze to the young, green-haired half-elf swordsman leaning against the wall, Zayne received a sharp, affirmed nod from Aston.

"Cerci," Zayne continued, looking toward the legendary Great Sage. "You stay back here and make sure no stray demons slip past the barriers into the city. Restrict your output, however—we don't want the capital accidentally turned into a glowing wasteland of glass."

Zayne's gaze shifted to the veteran powerhouses. "Orion, Duncan, and Ronald. You are not to intervene directly in the frontline skirmish. Your objective is to encircle their perimeter and hunt down whoever is assisting them from the inside. Cut off the head of the snake."

He turned his focus back to the younger generation and the support tiers. "Maya, Darv, and the rest of the assistants will lead the vanguard charge directly alongside Kyle and Luke. Make sure the operation is precise, clean, and thorough. No loose ends."

A heavy, probing silence descended upon the meeting room as the tactical weight of the orders settled in.

Aston shifted uncomfortably, raising a hand. "If I may ask... what about me?"

Zayne smirked, his golden eyes glinting with amusement. "Isn't it obvious? You and Valen are going to take out the leader."

The entire room froze. Every single pillar—except for Duncan, Cerci, and Ronald—instantly whipped their heads around to stare at Zayne as if he had suggested jumping off a floating continent.

Darv, the massive earth archmage, crossed his arms, his brow furrowing in deep skepticism. "With all due respect, Patriarch... how can a mere archmage hope to aid a Monarch in taking out a high-ranking commander?"

Zayne let out a dry, knowing chuckle, satiating their collective curiosity. "If you must know, Aston is an absolute anomaly. Having attained the rare elf blessing, his mana density and combat perception allow him to compete directly with beings ranked far above him."

Orion, the elderly Monarch of Flames, slowly turned his wild white hair, sparing Aston a sharp, appraising glance from eyes that burned like dying stars.

"Without any further additions, this meeting is adjourned," Zayne declared, striking his hand lightly against the table to dismiss them.

Meanwhile, far away from the war room, miles from the looming threat of demonic incursions and ancient relictombs, **Kyle** was currently enduring a far more agonizing ordeal.

It turned out that the entire morning chaos, the forced early wake-up call, and the hurried exit from the estate had all been part of an elaborate, premeditated conspiracy masterminded by Olivia and Silvia. Their true, devious objective? Shopping for wedding gifts for Luke and Diana.

And so, Kyle found himself transformed into a literal, breathing pack-mule.

He staggered down the bustling, sunlit cobblestone streets of the capital's grand bazaar, buried beneath an avalanche of awkward, oversized gift boxes, decorative vases, and cascading ribbons. His arms trembled, his legs ached, and his soul felt like it was slowly leaving his body. A few paces ahead of him, Reo and Silvia strolled hand-in-hand like a pair of nauseatingly affectionate lovebirds, whispering sweet nothings while Olivia skipped merrily from one boutique to the next, entirely immune to Kyle's silent, desperate pleas for mercy.

Kyle heaved a long, shuddering sigh, adjusting the towering stack of fragile porcelain balancing precariously on his shoulder as he stared blankly at the back of Olivia's head.

*I fought a primordial nightmare, nearly had my soul unmade by a cosmic entity, and survived a demonic ambush in the slums,* Kyle thought, his voice echoing with profound, hollow defeat as a lone tear rolled down his cheek. *Clearly, the abyss should have just kept me.*
