Chapter 55 - THE ALLEYWAY AMBUSH

The bricks didn't just crumble; they wept a fine, grey dust before peeling backward like wet parchment, revealing a gaping, jagged tear in the spatial fabric of the capital's oldest slum.

Kyle's eye twitched. *Of course.* Naturally, a simple spatial teleportation anchor courtesy of the world's most irritating masked landlord couldn't just drop them on a nice, clean cobblestone street. It had to deposit them directly into a garbage-choked back alley, right on cue for a midnight ambush.

"Is this a joke?" Kyle muttered, his voice dripping with exhausted disbelief as he wiped a streak of questionable mud off his cheek. He flexed his fingers, the faint hum of his 8th-circle mana channels sparking against the obsidian pendant like a disgruntled hornet. "We haven't even been back in the capital for five minutes, and reality is already trying to assassinate me again."

Beside him, Azula stood unmoving, her silhouette half-swallowed by the creeping shadows of the damp walls. Though her face remained an impassive mask of chilling obedience, the dormant, oceanic weight of the Dark Lord hummed beneath her skin, causing the very air around her to ripple with a subtle, unnerving distortion. She didn't flinch. She didn't draw a weapon. She merely tilted her head, her gaze locking onto the expanding tear in the masonry with the blank indifference of an apex predator inspecting a minor inconvenience.

From the void within the wall, the scratching grew frantic—a rhythmic, clicking cacophony of chitin scraping against stone.

Then, it stepped out.

It was a monstrosity born of urban rot and twisted sorcery: a hulking, multi-limbed scavenger beast whose carapace was fused with discarded iron scraps and cobblestones, its massive skull dominated by four pulsing, multi-jointed eyes burning with a sickly yellow luminescence. Saliva dripped from its mandibular maw, hissing softly as it hit the filthy pavement.

The beast locked its horrifying gaze squarely onto Kyle, letting out a rattling, guttural shriek that shook the soot from the hanging lanterns overhead.

Kyle let out a long, long-suffering sigh, his shoulders slumping. He looked down at the stupid obsidian pendant dangling from his neck, then back up at the towering abomination blocking their only exit.

"You know what?" Kyle muttered, a dangerous, unhinged smile slowly stretching across his blood-stained face as his hands ignited with a volatile, multi-elemental crackle of crimson fire and piercing blue ice. "I was looking for a way to vent some aggression before the engagement party anyway. Let's see how much punishment this ugly trash can take."

The beast lunged forward with terrifying speed, its iron-infused claws tearing through the cobblestones as it closed the distance in a heartbeat. But Kyle wasn't the half-drained, desperate novice who had crawled out of the obsidian altar a day ago.

With a sharp snap of his wrist, a dense, razor-sharp pillar of blue ice erupted from the filth beneath the creature's paws, catching it mid-charge and sending it crashing violently into the brick wall. The impact shattered masonry, but the beast shrieked, its multi-jointed limbs thrashing as it tore free, its yellow eyes blazing with unholy fury.

As it scrambled back up, a foul, sulfurous stench cut through the damp air of the alley—a heavy, nauseating reek of rotting vegetation and coagulated old blood. Kyle's nose wrinkled in sudden disgust. He froze for a fraction of a second, his tactical instincts clicking into place as he analyzed the strange black veins pulsing beneath the creature's cracked carapace.

*Abyssal corruption.*

This wasn't some stray scavenger beast that had crawled up from the city sewers. Ordinary magical beasts couldn't metabolize the suffocating, unmaking resonance of the abyss; only creatures tainted directly by demonic experimentation or planar rifts could carry this specific, sickening stench. It was a demonic beast, smuggled or dragged through a hidden tear straight into the heart of the capital. Someone high up was playing with fire, and the capital's security was leaking like a sieve.

"You really picked the wrong night to mug a very angry mage," Kyle snarled, his eyes flashing with a volatile, berserk light.

Before the beast could recover its footing, Kyle unleashed a furious torrent of elemental fire. A roaring vortex of crimson flames swallowed the alleyway whole, baking the damp stones white-hot. The demonic beast let out a final, ear-splitting screech as the fire incinerated its external armor, burning straight through its corrupted core. With a heavy thud, the charred carcass collapsed into the ash.

Kyle exhaled a long, shaky breath, wiping soot from his forehead. He flicked his wrist, invoking his spatial ring. With a faint silver shimmer, the massive, charred remains of the demonic beast vanished into storage for later dissection and inspection. He couldn't afford to ignore clues about how demonic beasts were roaming the capital freely on the eve of the engagement party.

He turned his head slightly, addressing the silent, shadow-cloaked figure standing patiently beside him. "Vaygar," Kyle instructed quietly, "wander around the capital. Keep your eyes and ears open, and find me any clues about how these things are getting in. Meet me back here when you have answers."

Azula gave a single, rigid nod, her form melting seamlessly into the sprawling shadows of the city streets without a sound, leaving Kyle alone in the reeking alley.

Scaling the towering masonry of the capital's residential district was child's play for an 8th-circle mage, even a battered one. A brief application of spatial gravity and a quiet vault brought Kyle and Azula straight up to the second-story exterior of his private quarters. Slipping past the glass pane, they clambered through the wide-open window, landing soundlessly on the plush carpets of Kyle's dimly lit bedroom.

Kyle locked the window behind them, letting out a heavy, bone-deep sigh as the adrenaline finally began to fade, leaving a dull, throbbing ache across every inch of his frame. He turned to Azula, his expression softening slightly as he looked at the quiet girl who bore the weight of a god's gaze.

"Look," Kyle said, running a tired hand through his silver-streaked hair. "I know the Dark Lord bound you to follow me, but I don't intend to use you as a weapon, or a tool, or anything like that. You survived hell just like I did. You're free to do whatever you want here."

Azula stared at him, her blank expression flickering with a momentary, unreadable surprise before returning to its cold mask. She didn't say a word.

Deciding to deal with the mountain of pain currently screaming inside his nervous system, Kyle reached up and began to unlace his tunic. He pulled the blood-soaked, ruined fabric over his head and tossed it aside, stepping closer to the full-length mirror to inspect the damage.

His chest and torso were a complex web of thick, medical bandages—remnants of his brutal encounters in the trial. But it was his right hand that caught his attention; the skin was violently scorched and blistered black, though faint, unnatural wisps of pale light were slowly knitting the dead tissue back together. Healing, yes, but painfully slow.

Just as Kyle reached up to peel back a section of gauze near his shoulder, the heavy oak door to his bedchamber clicked.

*Creeeak.*

The door swung slowly open. Standing on the threshold, holding a silver tray with a midnight cup of tea, was Olivia.

Her footsteps cut off dead. Her eyes widened to the size of saucers, sweeping across the chaotic scene: Kyle standing completely shirtless in the center of the room, his body caked in dried blood, sweat, and soot, with a mysterious, wet, battle-worn girl standing silently just a few feet away.

For three agonizing, breathless seconds, absolute silence filled the room. Olivia stared at Kyle. Kyle stared back at Olivia.

The tray slipped from Olivia's fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor as her jaw dropped.
