Chapter 52 - THE DROWNING DARK

Vilthrax let out a low, satisfied hum, twisting the crimson blade deep within her chest before yanking it free with a wet, sickening schaff. Azula slumped forward, her weight crashing against Bani's chest as her eyes lost their focus, slipping into a terrifying, hollow stillness.

Bani caught her. His arms wrapped around her limp, fragile frame as they both collapsed onto the jagged, freezing stone.

Across the cliff top, the howling demon packs closed in, their heavy footsteps shaking the earth, but Bani couldn't hear them. The roaring silence in his mind swallowed everything. The memories of the damp barracks, the exhausted children sleeping in the dark, the desperate months of planning—all of it dissolved into a single, blinding point of absolute, crushing agony.

Vilthrax stepped closer, the executioner's boots crunching on the gravel, his crimson daggers dripping with fresh, dark blood. A cruel, mocking smirk twisted his scarred face as he raised his weapon for the final stroke.

"A touching display of loyalty," Vilthrax sneered, his voice cutting through the wind. "Too bad it ends in the dirt."

As the blade descended towards Bani's neck, a figure slammed into him.

The impact of the golem hitting Vilthrax was a sudden, jarring disruption of physics, buying a split second of stolen air. Without a word, without a backward glance, Bani lunged for the precipice and threw himself off the jagged cliff edge, clutching Azula's lifeless form tight against his chest. Behind him, the synthetic avatars—molded in the exact likeness of himself and Azula—swarmed the executioner, their rudimentary cores igniting in a desperate, violent frenzy of counter-attacks.

But the cliff top was already a sea of shifting black iron.

As Bani plummeted toward the churning, black-water abyss, a chorus of sharp twangs fractured the howling wind. Arrows—tipped with barbed bone and laced with paralytic venom—rained down from the crest.

Protect her.

Twisting his body mid-air, Bani curled his frame entirely around Azula's limp shape, using his own flesh as a living shield. A volley of dark iron shafts tore through the air, piercing his back, his shoulders, and his thighs with sickening, wet crunches. Venom flooded his veins instantly, setting his blood on fire while freezing his internal organs to a crawl. A thick gout of black blood bubbled past his lips, dissolving into the rushing wind as they struck the surface of the dark sea.

The impact with the water was like hitting solid granite. The freezing tide rushed in, heavy, oppressive, and absolute, dragging them down into the suffocating depths as consciousness fractured and slipped away.

Below the surface, the twin shadow golems plunged into the black water after them.

The golem resembling Azula surged forward, its synthetic arms wrapping around Luke's sinking body and hauling him toward the waiting wooden raft drifting near the cliff's base. Simultaneously, the Bani-lookalike golem chased the sinking silhouette of the real Azula as she drifted deeper into the current.

It closed the distance, its hand extending to grab her sleeve—when a violent eruption of dark, silent flames burst outward from the gaping wound in her chest.

The fire did not crackle; it devoured the water itself, a hungry, abyssal black blaze that consumed her body whole in a fraction of a second. The golem's synthetic eyes widened in stark, hollow shock. As the dark flames dispersed into the current, Azula was gone. Not a single trace remained, swallowed by a mystery deeper than the sea.

Reluctantly, the golem kicked upward, breaking the surface to heave itself onto the wooden raft beside its twin. The atmosphere on the small vessel was suffocating, heavy with a grim, hopeless silence.

Beneath the floorboards, where Bani's broken, poison-racked body lay, the shadows began to stir.

They rose from the floorboards like living ink, creeping upward to weave themselves into a dense, suffocating cocoon that completely swallowed his bleeding frame. For a heartbeat, the world held its breath. Then, the dual golems crumbled into ash, their forms collapsing inward to merge with the pool of absolute darkness.

From the center of the pool, a figure rose.

Raven-black hair plastered against pale, flawless skin, void-black eyes devoid of warmth or hesitation—the figure stepped forward, stretching out a hand. From the shadows beneath his palm, a second figure slowly pulled itself free, identical in every feature save for a subtle, trembling hesitation in its posture.

"From now on, I'm in charge," the first figure spoke. His voice carried an absolute, crushing weight, a domineering resonance that commanded the very air to bend around him, dwarfing the presence of the duplicate standing beside him.

Above deck, the dark cocoon began to pulse with a rhythmic, heartbeat-like thrum, casting long, writhing shadows across the water as the river carried the raft inexorably onward, slipping quietly across the threshold toward the human realm.
