Chapter 50 - THE ABYSS OF IRON AND ASH

The moment they stepped through the shimmering veil of the demonic portal, the mortal world was swallowed by an unyielding nightmare. The demon realm did not breathe oxygen; it exhaled sulfur, ash, and an oppressive, ancient malice that clawed at the lungs and pressed down upon the soul with the weight of an ocean. The sky above was a permanent, bruised violet, choked by billowing clouds of black smoke that blotted out any trace of stars. Jagged mountains of rusted iron pierced the horizon like broken teeth, and rivers of boiling magma snaked across the cracked, obsidian earth, casting a sickly, flickering red glow over the wasteland.

It was into this incinerator of a world that the children of Vae-Koris were cast.

For three agonizing, blood-drenched years, the surviving youths were subjected to a regimen of extermination disguised as training. There was no mercy in the abyss, only the relentless, grinding machinery of survival. They were thrown mercilessly into the path of disaster-class monsters—hulking, multi-limbed horrors of bone and corrupted mana that hunted them through the ash-choked canyons. The air was constantly thick with the copper stench of spilled blood and the agonizing screams of those whose bodies were torn apart before they could even grasp the concept of combat.

Every single day was an exercise in pure suffering. Muscles were ripped, bones shattered, and minds broken under the relentless psychological torture of the demonic overseers. Corpses piled high in the trenches, their remains left to rot under the acidic rain. Slowly, inevitably, their numbers dwindled to a fraction of the frightened children who had first crossed the threshold.

Yet, even in the darkest, most suffocating depths of despair, a solitary beacon remained lit. Azula stepped into the breach, taking up the mantle of leadership. With a resilience that defied her tender age, she moved among the broken, weeping survivors, whispering words of defiance, nursing their shattered bodies, and fueling a stubborn, flickering flame of hope that they would one day find a way back home.

Death, however, was an unyielding auditor. Exactly three years to the day, a brutal culling was executed. The quarter of the children who had failed to forge either a stable mana or qi core within their souls were dragged out to the obsidian plains and summarily slaughtered, their lives snuffed out to weed out the weak.

Amidst the carnage, an unbreakable bond forged in fire and shadow took root between Azula and Bani.

Bani's latent, terrifying talent had not gone unnoticed by their tormentors. Because his potential burned brighter than the others, his training was magnified into a waking hell of unprecedented cruelty. Bezubeel, the Demon Sin of Sloth, looked upon the raven-haired boy not with paternal care, but with the cold detachment of a master smith tempering a blade of cursed steel. Bezubeel personally oversaw his torment, drilling into him the exact, lethal dagger-fighting style wielded by Vilthrax.

Once in a while, Bezubeel summoned Vilthrax to spar with the boy. Those sessions were masterclasses in brutality. Vilthrax did not hold back an ounce of his strength; he carved deep, agonizing lessons into Bani's flesh, beating him bloody, breaking his ribs, and leaving him half-conscious in the dirt, only to demand he stand back up and fight again. Bani absorbed the agony in silence, his dark, stubborn eyes hardening into obsidian glass, swallowing the pain and converting it into a cold, lethal focus.

When they had survived three years and six months in the suffocating cradle of the realm, the children were marched down into a cyclopean underground chamber carved from living black rock.

Here, they were forced into a ritual of terrifying metamorphosis: to absorb the raw, volatile shadow essence of a mysterious, semi-physical shadow entity writhing in the center of the room. The process was a symphony of torment. The essence did not merely enter their bodies; it hunted for their cores, devouring their vital energy from the inside out to forge a corrupted shadow core. The chamber echoed with the shriek of tearing flesh and breaking minds as 13 out of the 89 remaining children failed to anchor the essence, their bodies imploding into clouds of black ash.

When the smoke cleared, Bani and Azula stood as the most successful vessels, having survived the harrowing crucible and awakened new, terrifying abilities. Azula unlocked the power to slip seamlessly through shadows, and with her ascent to the 6th circle, she gained the terrifying capacity to strike directly at an opponent's shadow.

Bani, meanwhile, kept his true depths shrouded in absolute secrecy. He discovered the ability to manifest any object or weapon entirely out of solidified shadows, and upon reaching the 6th circle, his power evolved into something monstrous: the ability to form complex shadow golems and split, share, or project his consciousness directly into them, acting as a ghost in the machine of the battlefield.

With Azula acting as the heart of the group, keeping the children's hopes alive with dreams of escape, Bani became the unyielding pillar she leaned upon. And in turn, driven by a fierce, silent devotion and the deep, protective feelings he harbored for her, Bani vowed to tear the very gates of this realm apart to keep her safe.

But as Bani finally crossed the threshold into the 7th circle, the nature of his training shifted from merciless to lethal. He knew intuitively that if this escalation continued, his body and mind would eventually shatter; he would not survive another year of Bezubeel's accelerated schedule.

Driven by the necessity of survival, Bani began to push his newfound shadow-golem ability to its absolute limits. He forged a microscopic, avian shadow golem—a tiny, undetectable bird of pure darkness—and sent it soaring through the jagged, poison-choked skies of the demon realm, mapping out every hidden escape route, every perimeter guard post, and every weakness in the demonic architecture.

Late one night, under the sickly glow of a blood-red moon, Bani's avian shadow perched silently among the gnarled, iron-black branches of a dead tree overlooking Bezubeel's private obsidian terrace.

Below him, the low, chilling cadence of Bezubeel's voice drifted up, conversing with the jagged, horned shadow of Vilthrax.

"...the boy progresses faster than anticipated," Bezubeel's smooth, cultured voice murmured, adjusting his wire-rimmed spectacles as he swirled a goblet of dark, bubbling liquid. "His shadow core is maturing into a delicacy of rare vintage."

Vilthrax let out a low, gravelly chuckle, his crimson daggers catching the dim red light. "A pity to break such a fine weapon, but needs must. When do we harvest his shadow core?"

"Soon," Bezubeel replied, a cold, predatory smile stretching across his face. "Once it is ripe, you shall assimilate it entirely, Vilthrax. That will grant you the precise edge required to bypass Cerci's spatial wards and cut down her precious little ward the next time you meet on the mortal front."

High above, hidden among the dead leaves, the shadow bird froze.

The blood in Bani's veins turned to ice. Every muscle in his body locked tight as the full, horrific truth washed over him. They were never training him to be a soldier; they were fattening him like a sacrificial lamb, waiting for the precise moment to rip his soul from his chest and feed it to the monster standing below.

The escape date he had planned in his head vanished. The timeline was shattered.

In the dark of the canopy, Bani's dark, stubborn eyes flared with a lethal, terrifying intensity, the shadows around him trembling in violent resonance with the boiling rage and desperate resolve exploding within his chest.
