Chapter 14 - WHISPERS IN THE ALLEY

Later on, Kyle and Olivia walked side by side through the bustling streets of Arthenis, the vibrant capital of Bain. The avenues were a chaotic symphony of life, packed with dense crowds and aggressive stall owners shouting over one another, trying to coerce passersby into buying their wares.

Kyle and Olivia stopped occasionally at various open-air booths to pick up the remaining supplies needed for the upcoming event, frequently pausing to sample eye-catching street foods as they drifted deeper into the market district.

After an hour or so of wandering, they came across a dimly lit stall offering a wide variety of ornate accessories, ranging from polished gemstone rings to intricate metal necklaces.

A delicate phoenix necklace immediately caught Olivia's eye, its ruby-inlaid wings glinting in the afternoon light. "Isn't it beautiful?" she murmured, holding it up.

"I suppose it is," Kyle replied flatly, not even sparing the trinket a glance. His attention had been violently yanked away, hooked by a figure standing across the crowded path—a man whose face was entirely concealed beneath a deep crimson cloak.

The mysterious man abruptly turned his head, locking eyes with Kyle through the dense stream of pedestrians. Neither of them blinked, holding a silent, intense stare until the cloaked figure abruptly spun on his heel and melted back into the moving crowd.

"What's wrong?" Olivia asked, finally noticing that he had tuned her out completely. "If you're feeling uncomfortable out here, we can head back."

"No need for that," Kyle muttered, his gaze frantically scanning the shifting masses of the crowd in search of the red cloak.

Eventually, realizing the man had vanished, Kyle gave up the search and exhaled slowly. He reached down and picked up the phoenix necklace from the stall.

"You wanted this, right?" he asked, not waiting for her response. He flicked his wrist, retrieving a handful of gold coins from his dimensional ring and tossing them carelessly onto the wooden counter. "Keep the change," he told the startled shopkeeper.

Before the man could even utter a word of thanks, Kyle grabbed the necklace, shoved it into Olivia's hand, gripped her wrist, and pulled her away from the stall, weaving through the foot traffic until they ducked sharply into a narrow, secluded alleyway.

"Kyle, what on earth is going on?" Olivia gasped, leaning against the damp brick wall to catch her breath from their sudden, breathless sprint.

Surveying the shadowy perimeter for any immediate threats, Kyle glanced down at her, his expression grim. "We're being followed."

Straining his eyes to peer down the length of the darkening alley, Kyle caught a fleeting, subtle movement rippling through the shadows further down. "Stay right here."

Dashing deeper into the twisting labyrinth of the alley system, he spotted the unmistakable silhouette of the red-cloak man sprinting away. Channeling a burst of wind mana beneath his boots, Kyle propelled himself forward in a sudden rush of air, closing the distance in seconds.

The being, realizing Kyle was rapidly gaining on him, cut hard into a dead-end corridor blocked by towering stone walls.

The chase ground to an abrupt halt. The man turned, the heavy fabric of his crimson hood shifting just enough to grant Kyle a terrifying glimpse beneath. Human vocabulary broke against the sight; there were no mortal words to capture the cascading, shifting geometries of absolute horror that hid within those folds, a visage of pure, non-Euclidean dread that threatened to unsprawl the very sanity of anyone unfortunate enough to perceive it.

The entity raised a hand that felt less like flesh and more like an abyss folding inward, its deep, resonant voice vibrating directly inside Kyle's skull. "Stay your wrath, child. I walk as the herald of the Sovereign of the Deep."

Kyle's breath caught, every instinct screaming at him to flee, yet he held his ground, his muscles locked in defensive tension. "Why are you here?"

The messenger tilted its shifting, unnamable shape. "My master looks upon your path and finds your current stride painfully sluggish. The universe does not wait for children to mature. He demands to know why you linger in the dirt of petty politics when the vault of Storm Cove Academy holds the key to your true ascendance. You have long outgrown these mortal age restrictions; slipping past their wards is a triviality for one of your blood."

"Do you think breaking into a sovereign institution is a game?" Kyle snapped, his voice sharp to mask the creeping terror. "If your master desires it so badly, why doesn't he simply take it himself?"

"There are absolute tides that even an existence such as my master must yield to," the entity replied, its tone a chilling hum of ancient power. "A threshold has been drawn across his reach, a decree carved by laws older than stars."

"Then he isn't truly absolute," Kyle scoffed bitterly. "If a simple boundary can check him, perhaps he isn't worth serving."

The shadows around the messenger surged, an oppressive, suffocating pressure dropping over the alley like an iron anvil. "You tread dangerously close to oblivion, boy. You have witnessed the true face of my master's might—do not mistake his patience for an invitation to mock him. Guard your tongue, lest the universe unmake you here and now."

"Is that a threat?" Kyle sneered, channeling mana into his palm as an ice blade sparked to life. But the moment the weapon formed, the ambient horror radiating from the messenger washed over it, and the ice simply unraveled, dissolving back into nothingness before Kyle's wide eyes.

"We are not here to spill blood over foolish pride," the messenger whispered, its voice echoing with the weight of dying worlds. "I have delivered the decree. What you choose to build upon it is entirely your burden. Our paths will cross again when the horizon breaks."

With a final, chilling inclination of its hooded head, the figure dissolved not into fire, but into a thick, absolute blackness that evaporated instantly, leaving the alley completely empty.

Footsteps echoed sharply around the corner just as the anomaly vanished. Olivia rounded the bend, peering anxiously into the empty dead-end. "There you are," she breathed, her eyes widening as she realized he was entirely alone. "That's strange... I could have sworn I heard two people talking just now."

"Let's head back," Kyle said curtly, brushing past her without breaking stride, in no mood for idle chatter.

The walk back to the estate was wrapped in a heavy, suffocating silence. Kyle remained entirely lost inside his own head, turning the cloaked man's words over and over again.

If there was a hard limit to how much the Dark Lord could interfere, the question burned in his mind: Who or what put that limit there? Who possessed the unfathomable strength required to restrict a monstrosity that viewed ancient gods as nothing more than loose pebbles beneath its feet? But what truly unsettled him, prickling at the back of his neck, was the sheer impossibility of how the Dark Lord knew his location. It would have made sense back in the isolated depths of the forest, but here he was—thousands of miles away, deep within the heavily warded capital of Bain.

They finally arrived back at the sprawling Lucas Residence just as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in bruised strokes of orange and violet after making a few final stops along the way. By the time they stepped through the gates, the preparations for the evening were already reaching their final stages.

The grand banquet hall was staggering in scale, dwarfing the room Kyle had first entered upon arrival. At the front of the hall sat a raised stage holding three massive, ornate tables reserved strictly for the main family and visiting royalty. Below the stage, neat rows of silver tables stretched across the polished floor for the branch family and high-ranking nobility.

A plush red carpet ran down the center aisle leading straight to the stage, and the entire chamber was dripping with extravagant decorations. Vases overflowing with vibrant, exotic flowers sat centered on every table below, while the high tables on the platform boasted even more elaborate arrangements of rare blooms and polished crystalware.

Kyle and Olivia handed off their bags of purchased supplies to Kathyln. While Olivia immediately hurried off to assist her mother with the final round of preparations, Kyle decided he had had enough socialization for one lifetime and turned to retreat toward his quarters.

As he stepped onto the grand staircase leading up to the second floor, a heavy, familiar voice halted him in his tracks.

"There you are, young man. I've been looking everywhere for you."

Kyle raised his eyes to see Curtis standing at the top of the landing. Possessing broad, imposing shoulders and a heavily muscled build, the older man bore a striking physical resemblance to Ronald—save for the distinguished shock of thick grey hair swept back from his temples and the jagged, brutal scar that cut violently down the side of his face.
