In front of Konoha's Memorial Stone, a heavy silence hung in the air.
Nearly every ninja in the village had gathered there, with only those assigned to essential guard duty absent. Rows of shinobi stood solemnly before the stone monument, dressed in black or muted colors. The younger genin, many still children in both age and heart, struggled to contain their grief.
They had grown up under the teachings of the Third Hokage's Will of Fire. To them, Hiruzen Sarutobi had always been a gentle old man who cared for the village like a grandfather. They knew little of politics, conspiracies, or the shadows hidden behind authority. In their eyes, he had died protecting Konoha, and that alone made him a hero.
Soft sobbing could be heard among the crowd.
Naruto Uzumaki stood near the front, fists clenched at his sides. His blue eyes were red and swollen, and sorrow covered his face.
"Why did someone as kind as Grandpa Hokage have to die?" he muttered hoarsely.
Beside him, Konohamaru cried openly, tears streaming down his cheeks as he clung to his scarf.
Had Aoki Yoru been there, he might have patted Naruto on the shoulder and said bluntly, Kid, you're still too innocent. Can't you see most of the adults here are trying not to laugh?
But Yoru was absent, and no one shattered the illusion.
Then suddenly—
Boom!
A violent explosion erupted in the southeastern part of the village. Flames burst into the sky, followed by a column of smoke visible even from the Memorial Stone.
The gathered crowd gasped in alarm.
Jiraiya's expression changed instantly. Konoha had only just survived Orochimaru's invasion. He would not allow another enemy strike so soon.
"Anbu Second Division!" he barked. "Remain here and maintain order. Everyone else, return to your posts immediately and prepare for a possible attack!"
Before the final word left his mouth, Jiraiya vanished in a blur of motion.
Several jonin followed him at once, leaping across rooftops toward the smoke.
Only minutes later, the shinobi with no immediate assignments arrived at the site of the explosion.
What they found was a collapsed underground entrance surrounded by rubble and dust.
Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane stared at the destroyed structure with grim faces. They recognized the place immediately.
It was one of Danzo Shimura's hidden Root facilities.
Neither Danzo nor any of his trusted subordinates had appeared since the funeral gathering began. Seeing the ruin before them, the two elders already understood the truth.
Something terrible had happened.
Homura turned to Jiraiya.
"This is one of Root's strongholds."
Jiraiya's pupils narrowed. A strange, unreadable look crossed his face.
"So Danzo has fallen too," he said quietly.
Despite his long-standing hatred of Danzo's methods, Jiraiya felt no satisfaction. Only exhaustion.
He had always known what Danzo was doing in the shadows. So had Tsunade. So had Orochimaru.
And their teacher—the Third Hokage—had known as well.
Perhaps Hiruzen had disapproved. Perhaps he had secretly condoned it. Perhaps he had simply lacked the resolve to stop it.
Whatever the truth, Danzo had been protected for decades.
That hypocrisy was one reason Jiraiya had left the village to wander. Tsunade had done the same.
Orochimaru, more bitter and more ruthless, had severed all ties completely.
Now Danzo was dead.
And with him, the old generation's sins were beginning to surface.
Shinobi skilled in Earth Release quickly cleared the collapsed tunnel.
As the dust settled, Danzo Shimura's body was revealed beneath the debris.
He lay motionless, bloodied and broken, his face frozen in death.
Homura and Koharu stared silently.
For decades, they had fought beside him in war. They had argued, schemed, and governed together. Though they often disagreed, Danzo had always been part of their world.
Now he was gone without ceremony.
Homura sighed deeply.
"Danzo... I never expected you to follow Hiruzen in death. I had planned to let you help stabilize the village."
Jiraiya glanced sharply at him.
So that had been their intention.
With the Third Hokage dead, only a few candidates remained to become the Fifth Hokage: Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Hatake Kakashi, whose fame had risen after recent battles.
But Kakashi lacked political backing and senior authority.
That left only Jiraiya and Tsunade.
The elders preferred Jiraiya because he cared little for power. If he became Hokage, their own influence would remain secure.
Still, as insurance, they had intended to release Danzo from house arrest and use him to balance the next Hokage's authority while the village was leaderless.
Now that plan had died in the rubble.
A voice suddenly called from deeper underground.
"Lord Jiraiya! Advisors! Please come see this!"
It was Nara Shikaku.
The group descended into the damaged facility.
What they found chilled everyone present.
It was a laboratory.
Rows of cultivation tanks lined the walls, each filled with murky fluid. Inside floated children—some alive, some lifeless, some so altered by experimentation that they barely resembled human beings anymore.
Jiraiya's face darkened instantly.
He had expected secrecy, assassination, and political crimes from Danzo.
He had not expected this scale of horror.
Some of these children might have been kidnapped civilians. Some might have been orphans. Some might even have been children of Konoha ninja families.
Shikaku stepped forward and handed him a bloodstained scroll.
"Lord Jiraiya... you need to read this."
Jiraiya opened it with a sharp snap.
As his eyes moved down the page, his expression transformed from anger to fury.
Detailed records filled the scroll.
Names.
Dates.
Experimental procedures.
Child abductions.
Forced recruitment of gifted civilians.
Brutal survival training where only one child in many lived.
Secret communications with enemy villages.
Operations designed to eliminate political rivals.
Then came a line that made Jiraiya's chakra erupt violently.
Danzo had leaked Jiraiya's whereabouts to Kumogakure in the past.
Another section implicated him in the false accusations that drove Sakumo Hatake—the White Fang—to despair and suicide.
The air in the room trembled.
"Danzo—!!"
Jiraiya's roar shook the laboratory walls.
His hands crushed the edges of the scroll. Veins bulged across his arms. Killing intent flooded the chamber so heavily that several shinobi instinctively stepped back.
Had Danzo still been alive, Jiraiya might have torn him apart with his bare hands.
As the scroll passed from hand to hand, silence spread among the gathered jonin.
Every new page revealed another atrocity.
Kidnapped children used as test subjects.
Talented civilians forcibly taken into Root.
Young recruits made to kill one another to prove loyalty.
Manipulation of foreign conflicts.
Murder hidden beneath patriotic excuses.
The list seemed endless.
Even Homura and Koharu were stunned.
They had known Danzo crossed lines. They had known about certain illegal experiments and the forced recruitment of gifted clan heirs.
But they had not imagined the depth of his crimes.
Or perhaps they had never wanted to know.
The two elders exchanged uneasy glances.
Did Hiruzen know everything?
Neither asked the question aloud.
They already feared the answer.
The surrounding jonin were thinking the same thing.
Danzo had been one of Konoha's highest-ranking leaders. He had operated for decades with enormous resources.
Could the Third Hokage truly have known nothing?
Few believed it.
Jiraiya took a long breath and forced himself to calm down.
"Shikaku," he said coldly, "secure everything here. Records, prisoners, equipment—all of it."
He rolled the scroll shut.
"We'll decide how to handle the aftermath after the next Hokage is chosen."
The room remained silent.
Jiraiya knew these revelations would spread. Too many people had already seen them. Trying to bury the truth now would only deepen the rot.
And for once, he had no desire to protect the old man's reputation.
The Third Hokage had made his choices.
Now the village would live with the consequences.
Homura and Koharu wanted to object, but one look at Jiraiya's face made them hold their tongues.
They had lost the authority to control the situation.
Over the next several days, Konoha was thrown into turmoil.
Rumors moved faster than messenger hawks.
What Danzo had done inside Root leaked piece by piece through the village.
Some stories were true.
Some were exaggerated.
Many were worse than anyone imagined.
Even civilians who had never heard Danzo's name before now cursed him openly.
Families whose children had disappeared over the years gathered outside the Hokage Tower in grief and rage. Mothers screamed for answers. Fathers demanded justice. Some threw stones at the building.
They wanted bodies returned.
They wanted names.
They wanted someone to blame.
The elders barely managed to calm them.
The Shimura clan suffered as well. Wherever they went, villagers stared with disgust. Merchants refused service. Children whispered insults.
For the first time, they experienced the same cold treatment Naruto had endured for years.
And Danzo's disgrace did not stop there.
The Third Hokage's reputation also began to crack.
People asked dangerous questions.
How could such horrors happen under his rule?
How could a man as powerful as Danzo operate freely for decades?
If Hiruzen knew, he was guilty.
If he did not know, he was incompetent.
Either answer damaged the legend.
Neither Jiraiya nor the two advisors moved to suppress the rumors.
Too many ninja already knew the truth.
Too many had suffered because of it.
Besides, timing mattered.
The Third Hokage had died defending the village. Public gratitude still lingered. If the truth emerged now, while sympathy remained strong, the backlash would be smaller than if it surfaced years later.
It was a cruel calculation.
But politics had always been cruel.
Thus, while Konoha mourned one leader, it also watched another legacy collapse.
The village that preached the Will of Fire had long hidden darkness beneath its roots.
Now that darkness had been dragged into the light.
And once exposed, it could never be buried again.
