Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: Athena's Question

‎The arena was empty now. The ash of Ares's corpse still swirled in eddies, stirred by some unfelt wind. Adrestus stood alone among the ruins of the god's final stand, his spear in hand, his new sword heavy across his back. The golden light of Athena's departure had faded, but the air still hummed with residual power. He turned to leave.

‎"Wait."

‎Her voice was soft, almost gentle. He had not heard her return. But there she stood, ten paces away, her armor gleaming, her gray eyes fixed on him. Not the projection she had used before—this was Athena herself, fully manifest, her presence pressing against the edges of reality.

‎Adrestus stopped. He did not kneel. He had not knelt for Zeus, and he would not kneel for her.

‎"Why did you not claim the box for yourself?" she asked. "You were there. You could have taken it before Kratos arrived. You could have used its power to become a god. To rule. To reshape the world in your image."

‎Adrestus considered the question. It deserved an honest answer.

‎"Because I do not seek godhood," he said. "I seek to protect those who cannot protect themselves. The box was never mine to take. It was a weapon, and weapons are for killing. I have killed enough. I do not need to kill more."

‎Athena tilted her head. Her expression was unreadable, but her eyes—those gray, piercing eyes—seemed to look through him, past his armor and his scars, into the core of who he was.

‎"Most men would lie," she said. "They would speak of honor, of destiny, of the will of the gods. You speak of protection. Of enough. You are either the wisest man I have ever met, or the most foolish."

‎"Perhaps both."

‎Athena smiled. It was a small expression, barely a curve of her lips, but it transformed her face. She stepped closer, and the air between them grew warm.

‎"You interest me, Adrestus. You are not like the others. Not like Kratos, driven by rage. Not like the heroes of old, chasing glory. You simply... are. You stand. You protect. You endure." She raised her hand, and a small shape materialized on her palm—a tiny owl, no larger than her thumb, its feathers made of living gold. "I have a gift for you. Not a blessing—you already have my blessing. A boon. This owl will watch over your settlement. It will warn you of danger, spy on your enemies, and carry messages if you need them. It is not a weapon. It is a pair of eyes."

‎The owl lifted from her palm and flew toward Adrestus. It circled his head once, twice, then perched on his shoulder. Its weight was negligible, but its presence was not. He could feel its awareness, its connection to Athena, its silent vigilance.

‎"Thank you," he said.

‎Athena nodded. "I have also spread your name among the gods. They know you now—not as a rumor, but as a fact. The Spartan‑Breaker. The One Man Army. The Savior of the Northern Gate. Your fame has reached every corner of Olympus." Her eyes flickered. "Pheme is proud. She does not show it, but she is."

‎Adrestus said nothing. The mention of his mother still carried weight, still pulled at something he had tried to bury.

‎"Go home, Adrestus," Athena said. "Build your settlement. Train your soldiers. The world will need you soon. Kratos is the God of War now, and the gods are not kind to those who serve them. There will be war. There will be betrayal. And when it comes, I hope you will choose wisely."

‎She began to fade, her form dissolving into golden light.

‎"Athena," he called.

‎She paused.

‎"Why are you helping me? What do you want?"

‎The goddess's smile returned, wider this time. "Perhaps I want what you want. A world worth protecting. A future worth fighting for." She vanished.

‎The owl on his shoulder hooted softly.

‎Adrestus dismissed the screen and walked out of the arena. The owl nestled into the crook of his neck, warm and still. He had a settlement to return to, soldiers to train, a kingdom to build.

‎And somewhere on Olympus, a goddess of wisdom watched him go, already planning for the storm ahead.
