"You're still home?!"
I yank my head out of the fridge. Dad is standing in the kitchen doorway, keys in hand, staring at me like I just grew a second head.
Pure shock in his face, in his voice.
I don't get it.
"Good morning to you too, Dad," I say, grabbing a can of sparkling water. I crack it open and chug. My throat has felt like sandpaper since I woke up. It's Saturday. I'm supposed to be in bed right now, sleeping till noon with my blackout curtains doing God's work. That's been my survival rule ever since they threw me into this GED study group without even asking me.
He's still looking at me like that.
I lower the can mid-gulp. "Is there an occasion I'm missing?"
Because what else could it be? We did Percy's first birthday last month. And their wedding anniversary dinner. Am I forgetting something?
"Your GED lessons!" he says, like it's obvious.
My eyebrows pull together so tight it hurts.
