Janelle's Pov
I did not go back to my tent right away.
I stood in the rain and watched the grey figure walk the length of the camp, and I noticed what I should have noticed at once. The guards did not stop her. They did not even look at her. The ones who passed her stepped aside, and the ones at the fires found something interesting in the bottoms of their bowls. It was not respect. It was the way people behave around something they have been told not to see.
My wolf did not settle until the captain's tent swallowed her.
"Janelle."
I jumped. Mara had come up behind me with a blanket over her head, and she took my arm in a grip that hurt.
"Come away from here. Now."
She did not speak again until we were inside our tent with the flap tied shut. Then she sat me down, took my hands, and turned them over to inspect them. The tips of my thumb and forefinger were blistered from the candle.
"What did you do?"
"I burned myself on the kettle."
