The trial began at dawn on the third day at the father's house.
Kaela had arrived before sunrise to fetch them. Dressed differently — the territory's clothing but with ceremonial marks embroidered on the shoulders. The marks of a provisional leader in official function.
"It starts in two hours." Kaela. "At the main field."
"The same one from days ago?" Kai said.
"No. The main one. Ten times bigger. At the center of the territory."
Serah nodded.
She was already ready. She had gotten up before the rest — Kai had come out of the cave at dawn and found her in the main room, sitting in front of the fireplace, without ceremonial clothing or special marks. Just her usual clothes, the silver eyes fixed on the fire.
"Special clothes," Kai said when Kaela mentioned the marks.
"I don't need them." Serah. "Those who need ceremonial clothing are the ones whose history doesn't speak for itself."
Kaela smiled — short.
"Good. Let's go."
