Chapter 13 - The Familiar Face I Never Saw

As they all head back to the E.S.C. building for dinner, Kazu is walking on the complete opposite side of town, searching for evidence of the missing body.

At this time, it's already late and he should be getting back for dinner, but he decided to push on.

"Uhh, aren't we supposed to be headed back?" Shaba asked with much confusion.

Kazu doesn't say anything; instead, he turns into a wet, dark alleyway.

"It's fine, I'm on my own time anyways. Besides, I can't exactly get hungry anyways so it doesn't really matter." Kazu said softly.

Shaba hums… but then notices something is off.

"Kazu, I feel like we're being watched," Shaba whispered.

Kazu just shrugs and continues walking down the alleyway. Every footstep sounded like tension building.

Suddenly…

"Kazu, behind you!" Shaba shouts.

CLAAANG!!!

Kazu quickly deflects what seems to be a throwing dagger with his katana from behind, and it clinks to the ground.

"Whoever you are, show yourself immediately," Kazu said in a tired yet serious tone.

Just then, there is a low chuckle from above.

"My, my… For a blind man, you're quite perceptive…" The familiar voice replied.

The figure zips to the ground and adjusts his glasses. It was none other than Rin.

"Rin? What are you doing in the inner city? And why did you try to attack me?" Kazu questioned with a hint of alertness in his demeanor.

Rin steps closer while fixing his armor, "I wanted to see if the rumors are true. I saw you walking into the inner city, so I decided to leave a 'trail' for you."

Suddenly Kazu's face turns even more upset.

"So you're the one who left those burned curses there! Why would you do such a thing!?" It is illegal to dump curses on the outer border like that!" Kazu snapped.

However even with all of the scolding, Rin's face doesn't change; instead, he actually grins even wider as if he was proud to hear Kazu's words.

"Don't be such a buzzkill, I just wanted to see how far you'd go just to find me," Rin said with a shrug.

Kazu scoffed at his words, "I wasn't trying to find you; I was looking for a man's missing body! What is wrong with you!?"

Finally, Rin's grin faltered slightly. He looked Kazu dead in the face.

"I don't like your tone. Talk to me like that again… I might have to 'execute' you." Rin said jokingly.

However, for Kazu, a shiver ran through his body, as if Rin knew about his secret.

"That's not funny. How can an officer joke about something like that…?" Kazu muttered.

At his words, Rin looked confused. He leaned close and tapped his glasses.

"Officer? Who said anything about me being an officer?"

Just then it clicked. Kazu has officially realized that he was standing right in front of The Holy Headsman.

Kazu takes a step back slowly, as if he's facing a rabid dog, and Rin notices it pretty quickly.

"Where ya goin'? I'm not done talking yet." Rin takes a step even closer, and then he senses something that would change his perspective on Kazu forever.

He stops in his tracks and he sniffs the air, his eyes rolling back at the scent.

"Kazu, Kazu, Kazu. Don't tell me you've been hiding somethin' from everyone~" Rin said while slowly grinning.

Kazu lets out a shuddering breath; he's never been scared or nervous about anything, but standing right at death's door would make anyone feel this way.

"What do you mean…? What am I hiding…?" Kazu murmured.

Rin lets out an unsettling chuckle, "You think I didn't notice that curse you're holding onto? Don't worry, I won't kill you… quickly."

That's all Kazu needed to hear.
