Chapter 350 - Chapter 350: "Yveltal, You Are Simply Too Dangerous!"

Chapter 350: "Yveltal, You Are Simply Too Dangerous!"

The Cocoon of Destruction was a massive, black, cocoon-like object.

Legend held that this was the form the mythological Yveltal took on while in dormancy — its counterpart being the Tree of Life, the form Xerneas took while dormant.

After locating the Cocoon of Destruction, Team Flare hadn't actually made close physical contact with it yet. Legend also held that when Yveltal spread its wings and tail feathers, glowing with crimson light, it would drain the life force from any living thing nearby.

Who, in their right mind, would want to get anywhere close to something like that?

So Team Flare had used a helicopter's cable rig to haul the Cocoon of Destruction back to the base at Geosenge Town.

And now, Xerosic simply couldn't wait any longer. He had to activate the Ultimate Weapon, and activating it required Yveltal's power.

Under Xerosic's firm orders, Ali led two other Team Flare grunts, cautiously making their way into the chamber housing the Cocoon of Destruction.

Ali didn't dare get close to the cocoon — but Xerosic kept pressing him through the earpiece.

Trembling, Ali forced himself to approach the Cocoon of Destruction and slowly pressed his hand against its surface.

How to describe it — cool, hard to the touch. But maybe because he was too frightened to notice, Ali didn't catch the faint red glow flickering across his own hand as it sank straight into the Cocoon of Destruction.

"Sir, doesn't look like anything's happening."

After waiting a moment and noticing nothing unusual, Ali reported back to Xerosic.

"How could that be? So what's it going to take to wake Yveltal up — do we need to attack it?"

Xerosic mulled it over, genuinely puzzled — he honestly had no idea how to properly wake Yveltal.

"Wait!! Sir! It's lighting up!"

Suddenly, a terrified shout came through the earpiece from Ali's group.

Xerosic snapped his attention immediately to the monitor screen.

The once-still Cocoon of Destruction was now glowing with an ominous crimson light, growing steadily stronger.

Clearly, Yveltal was reawakening!

"YES! Excellent, Ali! Great work!"

Xerosic was thrilled — Yveltal was waking up, this was fantastic!

But Ali and the other two were staring at the now steadily-transforming cocoon in front of them with pure, unfiltered terror, a thick, oppressive aura of malice spreading rapidly through the air.

All three of their legs had already gone weak.

"RUN!!"

Finally snapping out of their shock, Ali and the others scrambled, half-tripping over themselves, fleeing the massive chamber.

And the Cocoon of Destruction, meanwhile, had already begun to slowly rise into the air, a pair of demonic, claw-like wings spreading wide open, black talons genuinely dreadful to look at, its tail feathers similarly shaped like an enormous claw.

"SCREEEE—!"

A piercing, hoarse shriek echoed relentlessly throughout the entire base.

Yveltal! Awakened!

Its body glowing with a faint crimson light, Yveltal's gaze swept across its surroundings with icy indifference, its aura violent and malevolent.

"Excellent! Yveltal, you're finally awake!"

Xerosic's voice rang out through the room, speaking to Yveltal over the base's intercom system.

Yveltal's pitiless eyes turned toward the intercom speaker mounted in the corner.

"Yveltal, don't you think this world..."

But before Xerosic could even finish, a blindingly bright crimson beam of light had already come sweeping through.

A blaze of crimson filled the room, that terrifying death ray tearing straight through the entire space under Yveltal's control.

Xerosic's monitor screen instantly filled with red static, then dissolved into pure white noise, startling him badly.

RUMBLE-BOOM!

A deafening, thunderous crash shook the entire base.

Xerosic went pale. What the hell?!

"Sir! We have to go! Yveltal's gone completely berserk!"

Ali burst into the main control room, shouting.

"Damn it! This thing!"

Xerosic gritted his teeth. Damn Yveltal — we woke you up out of the goodness of our hearts, and the second you're awake you go slaughtering the whole base?!

But he only dared complain internally, preparing to flee alongside Ali and the others.

BOOM!

Suddenly, a massive crimson beam tore straight through the wall, and the shockwave sent Xerosic flying.

He'd barely finished crying out in pain when, lifting his head, he saw it.

The crimson beam had struck Ali and the other two grunts — they hadn't even had time to scream before every last trace of their life force was drained away by that ray of death.

This was Yveltal's Oblivion Wing!

A wing capable of stealing the life from anything at all!

The Oblivion Wing's light gradually dispersed, but Xerosic's face had already gone bone-white, staring in genuine horror at the doorway.

Several silent statues stood frozen in place — the unmistakable forms of Ali and the other two.

Xerosic could even make out, with sickening clarity, the vivid, lifelike terror twisted into their expressions.

They were... dead.

Every last trace of life force stripped away, leaving them frozen as stone statues.

The thunderous booming continued without pause, Yveltal ruthlessly unleashing Oblivion Wing over and over, tearing apart the base, harvesting the life from every living thing inside it.

"How could this... how could this happen..."

Xerosic was seized by genuine, overwhelming terror, his entire body shaking uncontrollably.

Fear and regret twisted together inside his chest, leaving him collapsed helplessly on the floor, like some pathetic worm clinging desperately to life.

He genuinely regretted it now. If he'd never woken Yveltal at all, none of this would have happened.

"SCREEEE—!"

A cold, demonic shriek seemed to sound right beside his ear.

Xerosic lifted his head, and saw it — a massive black-and-red bird hovering directly overhead, spreading its wings, gazing down at him with the pitiless eyes of something godlike.

"No..."

Crimson light condensed, Yveltal's wings gradually drawing closed, a deathly red glow flaring to life.

Oblivion Wing!

"Please, don't..."

But what did the wailing of an ant matter to something like Yveltal?

Wasn't accepting death gracefully exactly the fate they were owed?

The blazing crimson beam tore down through the air, and Xerosic's entire field of vision filled completely with that terrifying scarlet light.

Exactly as Lysandre had once said — Xerneas was the kind, selfless giver, while Yveltal was the merciless taker. To Yveltal, life existed to be taken; no living thing could ever escape death.

And Yveltal... was simply sending them on their way a little earlier than they otherwise would have gone.

BOOM!

A thunderous roar shook the air, and the black-and-red Yveltal rose high into the sky, its demonic-clawed wings spreading wide, its cold, pitiless eyes surveying the lush, verdant land below.

A black, ominous aura began spreading outward, resonating with the crimson light across its body — malevolent, dark, dreadful!

This was Yveltal's signature ability, Dark Aura!

Some time later, when Mammon and Caitlin finally arrived at Geosenge Town, they were struck instantly by the sight before them.

What filled their vision was nothing but a landscape of utter lifelessness, gray in every direction.

Yes — everywhere they looked, endless, unbroken gray.

Trees, grass, humans, Pokémon — all of it had been turned to gray stone, without the faintest trace of life remaining.

Every ounce of life force from these living things had been stripped away by Yveltal.

"This..."

Even Caitlin found herself thoroughly shaken by the scene, her scalp prickling.

This was genuinely terrifying.

"Is this all Yveltal's doing?"

Mammon had told her, on the way here, that they were coming to find Yveltal — but Caitlin genuinely hadn't expected Yveltal to have gone this far.

"SCREEEE—"

Yveltal's low, distant shriek rang out, its massive black-and-red form rapidly closing in through the sky.

It seemed to have sensed two new living presences intruding on this dead land.

"Yveltal, the taker of life — the reputation is well-earned."

Mammon couldn't help a note of genuine admiration in his voice. Honestly, the first sight of this dead landscape had genuinely shaken him too.

Sure, he'd known Yveltal, as the legendary Pokémon with the worst "waking-up temper" of them all, would immediately unleash an indiscriminate burst of Oblivion Wing upon waking, taking every life in reach. But actually witnessing it firsthand was still a genuinely overwhelming sight.

Before Yveltal, ordinary lives were terrifyingly, helplessly fragile — nothing to do but await death.

Mammon genuinely couldn't imagine what would have become of Kalos if Xerneas hadn't been around to balance Yveltal out. The whole region probably would have long since become nothing but an endless field of stone statues.

Then again — even without Xerneas, Zygarde probably would have stepped in to suppress Yveltal regardless, given its role as guardian of ecological order. And Yveltal's unchecked harvesting of life was, without question, a direct assault on the ecosystem itself.

"SCREEEE—!"

Yveltal had already arrived directly above the two of them, its wings spread wide, its tail feathers curving slightly — the whole silhouette forming a massive letter "Y."

That was, in fact, exactly why the public had come to nickname it "the Y god," just as Xerneas's overall silhouette resembled an "X."

As for "Z" — 50% Forme Zygarde's overall shape resembled a Z as well, and its signature move, Core Enforcer, quite literally traced out a giant Z-shape in the process.

Credit where due, these little visual patterns really were easy enough to spot once you noticed them.

Yveltal's wings drew slightly closed, crimson light flaring to life.

"Tch~ no words at all, just straight to Oblivion Wing the moment we show up? Genuinely simple and direct, I'll give it that."

Mammon clicked his tongue, watching this unfold — truly, this was Yveltal, through and through.

The crimson Oblivion Wing tore through the air, shooting straight down toward Mammon and Caitlin on the ground below.

Without a shred of hesitation.

Dark Mewtwo appeared instantly in front of the two of them, a deep-purple psychic barrier flaring to life.

BOOM!

Oblivion Wing slammed heavily into Dark Mewtwo's barrier, blinding crimson light churning wildly before detonating in a violent burst.

A deafening explosion rang out, a powerful shockwave rippling outward.

Thick smoke and dust scattered under the force of Dark Mewtwo's arm sweep, and Dark Mewtwo slowly lifted its head, staring directly up at Yveltal in the sky.

Yveltal, for its part, narrowed its eyes slightly, looking down at Dark Mewtwo.

Something capable of absorbing a full blast of Oblivion Wing without question carried genuine strength — looks like it had run into something with real teeth this time.

"Yveltal — the very embodiment of death and destruction. What you've just done here is an act that defies both man and god alike. Truly unforgivable."

Mammon stepped forward, addressing Yveltal with an air of righteous conviction.

Yveltal's eyes showed no reaction at all, remaining just as coldly indifferent as ever — that had been true from the very moment of its birth.

Feared, loathed, condemned by every other living thing — that had always been its lot. Just like this human standing before it now. But what did any of that actually matter?

"You really are far too dangerous, Yveltal! For the sake of this world — I have no choice but to catch you!"
