Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 The Story of the Peas

Pea: An annual climbing herb with slender stems (30-200cm), pinnate compound leaves, and tendrils at the tips.

The flowers are white or purple, with a butterfly-shaped corolla.

The pods are oblong and contain round seeds (peas), which come in a variety of colors (green, yellow, brown, etc.).

Soon everyone arrived at the warehouse. Since it was before spring plowing, many villagers who had nothing to do also came here.

Actually, this village is quite small, with only about fifty households and less than three hundred people, including men, women, and children. All of these people are Serfs.

Upon entering the wooden room, Ed saw various farm tools piled up in the corner, most of them made of wood, with very few iron tools such as wooden plows, harrows, and sticks. Only sickles and other tools were made of iron, and some hoes were even made of stone.

Ed couldn't change these tools all at once; he could only try to find ways to improve breeding, fertilization, and farming methods to maximize the land's yield.

However, he doesn't need to worry about others not doing what he says, because he's in charge here, it's his territory, he's in charge, so he doesn't want to change these people's identities for the time being.

"Village chief, what crops are you planning to plant for spring planting?" Ed asked the old village chief.

" My Lord, plant peas on the cultivated land as before."

Ed knows that the land is currently being cultivated in one plot and left fallow in another, alternating between the two. This method of farming has limitations and the land utilization rate is not high.

Ed plans to cultivate all the land, implementing a spring-autumn-fallen system to improve land utilization.

Peas can be planted together with barley or oats to reduce lodging. Before sowing, select plump pea seeds to increase pea yield.

You can also collect livestock manure, wood ash, and human excrement, mix them together to decompose, and then spread them in the field before sowing to make the land more fertile.

"Well done, but I'd like to make some changes this spring planting season," Ed said slowly, looking at everyone.

"Oh... My Lord, we will all obey your will. Whatever changes you make, we will do as you say. We are your most faithful servants."

Ed felt a headache coming on. He looked around at the crowd of onlookers, but everyone was silent and no one spoke, unlike the old village chief's impassioned speech.

This silent repression is perhaps the most powerful form of resistance for the people at the bottom of society. They dare neither voice their opposition nor whisper their opinions.

In fact, they were still somewhat worried. In the past two years, Grey Castle Territory had experienced drought, resulting in a significant reduction in crop yields. Although the Old Lord had reduced taxes, people were still starving and many had died.

Now that the lord says he wants to change the farming methods that everyone has been using for many years, everyone is inevitably worried, but no one dares to speak out against it.

Ed looked at the silent crowd, trying to appear kind, even though he was a kind person to begin with.

Although he didn't say he was concerned about the world, he couldn't bear to see people in front of him who were poorly clothed and starving.

Ed gathered his emotions, cleared his throat, and addressed the crowd: "My people, thank my 'father' for bringing us together. Without him, there would be no me."

Adelaide, standing behind Ed, almost burst out laughing.

"It is his blessing that greatly reduced the losses from the drought in the past two years; it is his blessing that allows everyone to still live on this land," Ed praised enthusiastically.

"As for the changes to this spring planting season, I will have Butler Marcus inform everyone. Finally... if there is any reduction in yield during this spring planting season, I will no longer collect taxes on spring planting, but you must strictly follow my methods."

Everyone was startled and looked up at Ed with disbelief.
