Chapter 31 - The Weight of Control

The group had been walking for hours when the runes on the trees suddenly flared bright violet, bathing the entire area in harsh light. The mist recoiled as if burned, revealing ancient stone pillars covered in glowing inscriptions.

Hiroto stopped, his hand tightening around the hilt of his sword. For the first time in days, the silence felt different — not peaceful, but watchful.

Every time I push them, every time I make them listen, I feel it. The old version of me is shrinking. The one who apologized for existing, who waited for permission, who dreamed of a harem without understanding the price. I'm not sure I like who's taking his place, but I can't deny one thing: it feels good. Too good. Like I was always meant to stand here and decide for all of us. The problem is, the more I enjoy it, the less I remember why I started this road in the first place. Power is starting to taste better than the fantasy. And if this is what being a Harem Lord really means… then I'm not sure how much of the old me will be left when I reach the end.

Alyra tilted her head, ears twitching as she scanned the pillars.

"These runes… they're reacting to you," she said, voice unusually serious. "Not to us. To you."

Sylvara stepped closer to one of the pillars, her fingers hovering just above the glowing symbols without touching them.

"They're old. Older than Lunara's blessing, maybe. This isn't just a forest. It's a testing ground." She glanced at Hiroto, then at the other two. "Whatever happens here, we face it together. No one plays hero alone."

Lirael leaned against a nearby tree, arms crossed, but her usual smirk was gone. Instead, she watched Hiroto with narrowed eyes.

"You're changing faster than I expected," she muttered. "Last night you were still shaking when you gave orders. Today you look like you're starting to enjoy the weight." She pushed off the tree and walked closer. "Just remember — the more you pull the leash, the tighter it wraps around your own neck too."

Alyra shot Lirael a quick, possessive glance. "He doesn't need reminders from you, shadow girl. If he wants to enjoy it, let him. Some of us actually like the new version."

Lirael smirked faintly. "Jealous already, fox? Cute."

Before the tension could escalate, one of the runes flared violently. A low rumble echoed through the grove as cracks appeared in the ground near the pillars. Small, corrupted vine-like tendrils shot up, reaching straight toward Hiroto as if drawn to his presence.

Alyra drew her shortsword instantly, tail lashing.

"They're not coming for us. They're coming for him."

Sylvara moved to Hiroto's side, sword already half-drawn.

"Command us if you need to," she said quietly. "But don't hesitate. This place is watching how you lead."

Lirael didn't draw her weapon yet. She simply stepped closer to Hiroto's other side, her voice low.

"Show us what the new you can do… or are you still pretending you're the same lost boy who fell into this world?"

Hiroto stared at the writhing tendrils. For a split second he felt the old hesitation rise — then he pushed it down.

"Stay close," he said, voice firmer than he expected. "Sylvara, left flank. Alyra, right. Lirael… cover me."

The System chimed in his mind, its tone unusually quiet but with a sharp edge.

[They're not testing your strength anymore.

They're testing whether you still want to be saved… or whether you want to rule.

Careful, Host. Once you start liking the taste, it's hard to spit it out.

And from what I'm seeing… you're already licking your lips.]

Hiroto took a slow breath, his grip steady.

This wasn't about survival anymore.

It was about whether he still wanted to be the hero of his own story — or if he was ready to become the one who writes everyone else's ending.
