Henry Lester was genuinely amused by Yara Quillan's retort. But the laugh sent a pang through his chest, and he furrowed his brow. The moment Yara Quillan saw this, she hurriedly put down the bowl and pressed a hand to his chest. "Are you okay?"
"Have you forgotten what state you're in? Go on, laugh. It'd serve you right if you dropped dead from it. I..."
Before Yara Quillan could finish, Henry Lester grabbed her hand.
Their eyes met, and Yara Quillan's heart gave a nervous flutter. She hastily pulled her hand back and awkwardly changed the subject. "Are you going to eat any more? If not, I'll take the dishes down."
Henry Lester watched Yara Quillan turn away from him, stung by her blatant avoidance. It was only when she spoke that he managed to compose himself. "I'm done eating."
"Oh." Without a backward glance, Yara Quillan gathered the dishes and took them away.
