She moved quickly, hurrying toward the exit. But just as she reached the door, a small figure ran over and threw his arms around her leg.
"Mommy, where are you going?"
Pippa tilted his face up to look at her, his eyes filled with unease. Ever since his separation from Zane Patterson, Pippa had become sensitive to partings, terrified that Annelise might disappear as well.
Annelise looked down at Pippa's small hands clinging tightly to her leg, and a pang of emotion struck her heart.
She glanced down at herself. She was in her slippers, without even a coat, just running out in a panic like a lost soul.
She crouched down and stroked Pippa's head. The little one's hair was soft and fine, and it felt wonderful beneath her hand.
They had never been apart since the day Pippa was born. She couldn't bear the thought of leaving him.
