The old man impassively sized up the figure sitting not far away.
This grandson of his was too hard to read.
Let alone outsiders, even he, as his grandfather, couldn't figure out what he was thinking most of the time.
Perhaps due to some childhood trauma, Donovan had always been restless. He rarely settled down to think things through, usually just acting on impulse and never bothering to reflect or consider the consequences.
The old man didn't think he had asked a difficult question. Just moments before, when they had been discussing his recent love life, Donovan's attitude had been as casual as ever.
And yet, just now, he had clearly hesitated.
It was brief, but the old man had caught it.
This was Donovan's reply:
"The kid of a former classmate."
'He'd wanted to say she was a friend; that would have sounded more plausible. But… TSK.'
'The idea of being friends with Ethan Rhodes... he couldn't say the words even if it killed him.'
