Chapter 283 - Chapter 283: Things That Change

Chapter 283: Things That Change

Gin Ichimaru's response to Unohana's observation was to not have one.

"I don't know what you're referring to, Captain Unohana."

He turned his back and walked away, slow and unhurried, as though nothing had happened at all.

"I'm just an ordinary Squad 11 seated officer. Nothing more than that."

In the original story, Gin had been something considerably more complicated -- a figure with his own concealed motives running parallel to Aizen's operation, navigating a double position that required him to hide everything from everyone at all times.

The version standing here now was different.

Working under Matsushita Yusuke, operating in a relationship that had actual trust running through it, Gin had settled into something that could only be described in the most direct terms. He was loyal. Genuinely. The kind of loyalty that didn't require complicated explanation.

The reason was simple enough. Matsushita Yusuke had been consistently, actively working toward restoring what had been taken from Rangiku, and he shared information about that progress with Gin without being asked. Steady, without gaps.

What else could he offer in return for that, except everything he had.

That was the entirety of it. Two people. A straightforward arrangement.

The atmosphere that had been on the edge of breaking open moments ago dissolved without ceremony, fading into nothing as quietly as it had built.

Which left Sasakibe Chojiro standing exactly where he had been, body still braced, expression somewhere between bewildered and caught without a clear response. He blinked. Looked at the people around him who had all settled back into something resembling normal. Then half-turned and looked behind him.

Yamamoto was making tea.

So all of this had already been accounted for in the Captain-Commander's read on the situation.

"Hm? Oh."

Yamamoto rubbed his hands together at Sasakibe's unspoken question and set the cup down.

A good ceramic cup. Doesn't hold heat well, loses temperature fast -- which meant if you waited a few minutes, it reached exactly the right temperature to drink. The trick was not grabbing it too early or you'd burn your fingers.

"I simply thought that a minor matter like this, even without any special intervention from me, would sort itself out."

He took a small, quiet sip.

"Besides -- with Matsushita Yusuke present, these things tend to resolve themselves."

This was not flattery. It was not the particular type of exaggerated praise designed to make someone complacent.

Because Yamamoto's tone was level. Settled. The tone of someone who had already arrived at a conclusion and was simply stating it, without any confusion remaining in it.

He believed it. Completely.

Sasakibe, in a rare departure from his habit of finding the right response to everything, said nothing. He simply looked at the man in question with a complicated expression, watching him manage the situation, issue direction, hold the space together. The look on his own face had something helpless in it.

"For what it's worth, Captain-Commander -- you're not planning to step down, are you?"

"Don't be ridiculous, Chojiro. I still have plenty of work left in me. That kind of thinking is not something I entertain."

"Well. Good."

"But someone has to lay groundwork for what comes after."

Yamamoto reached into his sleeve and produced a dry, slightly shriveled roasted sweet potato, regarded it with a satisfied expression, and broke it cleanly in half.

"Nothing in this world is guaranteed. The principle of preparing for difficulty while things are stable is not something you can claim not to understand." He paused. "We have been in this position for nearly a thousand years. Soul Society has become something like still water. That is not a state of affairs that can continue indefinitely."

Before Sasakibe could form a reply, the half of the sweet potato was already being pressed into his hands.

"Sometimes I find myself wondering." A quiet pause. "Where exactly will the newly emerging will take us."

Sasakibe Chojiro did not answer. He accepted the sweet potato without comment and put it away.

"This is something I feel needs to be considered carefully over time. I'd ask your permission to discuss it with you separately, in private."

As a rule, Sasakibe was obliging to a fault -- the kind of person who followed Yamamoto's lead without resistance in almost every circumstance.

But occasionally he became unreasonably stubborn. This was one of those occasions.

Yamamoto closed his eyes and let out a small, quiet sigh.

"Do as you like. I have nothing particular to press."

Setting aside the private dynamic between those two -- a relationship built over nearly a thousand years -- things were moving on the other side of the stands as well.

The Squad 4 team had finished their evaluation. Kotetsu Isane let out a breath and delivered her conclusion.

"No serious damage. It's just -- just that--"

She hesitated, glanced sideways at Matsushita Yusuke, and chose her words with visible care.

"The impact from your exchange seems to have caused some bruising here."

She tapped her right index finger against her own temple.

"There appears to be some minor internal bleeding in the brain."

"What? Seriously? Is that bad?"

"Ah -- not critically, no. At a captain's level of recovery, once consciousness returns, the body should regulate itself back to full condition within about half a day."

That was the nature of Shinigami physiology.

Because they were fundamentally beings composed of reiatsu rather than conventional matter, the way their bodies functioned was consistently counterintuitive. Sufficient rest combined with a basic energy supply was enough for the vast majority of spiritual bodies to recover from almost any injury on their own -- though, as with many things, there were exceptions. Certain conditions resisted that natural process and imposed their own timelines on a spiritual body's lifespan.

Kuchiki Ginrei's declining health was one such case.

But that was a matter for another time.

With Zaraki's condition confirmed as nothing severe, Matsushita Yusuke let out a quiet breath and reached over to give Isane a brief pat on the shoulder.

"Exactly what you'd expect from Squad 4's vice-captain. Well done."

Not just a pleasantry. He actually meant it.

Because in the original story, after the Thousand-Year Blood War had run its course, the captain's position in Squad 4 had eventually passed to her. The raw strength might still have room to develop -- but in terms of professional standard, Kotetsu Isane was exactly what Squad 4's name implied.

Verbal recognition backed by genuine acknowledgment. Matsushita Yusuke operated that way with the people around him, consistently, as a matter of habit.

Kotetsu Isane's face went completely red.

She brought both hands together in front of her, all ten fingers knotting around each other in the specific way of someone experiencing more discomfort than they know what to do with.

"It's -- it's nothing, it's nothing at all, this is just what I'm supposed to do--"

And then.

"You're too close."

Matsushita Yusuke apparently had not registered this as a concern. He made a small surprised sound and stepped back half a pace, producing a slightly abashed smile.

"Sorry, sorry -- I tend to talk to people like this generally, so I don't always think about the distance. My apologies."

Kotetsu Isane did not respond. She tucked her chin down, nodded vigorously, then turned and walked away at a pace that could charitably be called hurrying.

"You're kind of something else, aren't you."

The voice came from behind him.

Matsushita Yusuke half-turned. Hitsugaya Toshiro was standing there with his arms crossed, directing a deeply skeptical look at him.

The height had not changed. The attitude had not changed. But despite both of those things, making eye contact had produced not even a flicker of backing down -- he tilted his head slightly upward and kept going.

"Is that fair to Vice-Captain Soifon?"

There was a specific reason someone standing at this particular angle could say something like that.

Ten years back, when Matsushita Yusuke had been serving as acting captain of Squad 10, the person who had actually handled the bulk of the substantive work had been Soifon. She had been the one doing the real guiding. Matsushita Yusuke's attention during that period had gone primarily toward his own development.

The result was that for Hitsugaya, both of the Squad 11 figures had a particular significance that sat in a slightly different category from other people. From where he stood, the comment was not out of bounds.
