The front doorway cracked.
Not a little.
A hard white line split down the inside seam and threw pale dust across the floor. Drax planted the shield-frame against it at once. Seris moved beside him. Lira hit the threshold with a burst of pressure hard enough to make the whole shelter cell ring.
The road-hunters outside did not stop.
Of course they didn't.
They had heard the deeper road answer the mouth. They had felt the mark answer back. And now they knew what the White Between had chosen to care about first.
Not the relic.
Kael.
No.
Sereh looked at the rear seam where the mouth relic had gone below.
Then at Kael's shoulder.
Then at the front door breaking under the hunters' careful strikes.
"We move now," she said.
Mara actually laughed once.
"Wonderful. Through which disaster."
Fair.
The lower chamber was already too small for the number of bad answers in it. The mouth relic was below them now, still connected to Kael through the mark. The road-hunters were at the front. The children were trapped in the corner with Vera. The dead rail under the floor had gone dark again, but not dead. Listening. Waiting.
Ren looked at the rear seam.
"Can it take us."
Sereh answered quickly. "Not all at once."
That was worse than a simple no.
Lira glared at the floor. "I am begging one road in this world to just behave like a road."
Nyx, somewhere near the rear opening again, said, "Then you are reading the wrong genre."
That almost got a laugh out of Mara.
Almost.
The doorway cracked wider.
A white hook punched through the seam and bit into the inside stone. Drax hit it with the shield-frame hard enough to bend it sideways. The hunter on the other side yanked back. Pale sparks burst from the frame.
Good.
Not enough.
Seris didn't look back.
"Order."
No one argued.
Of course not.
That word had saved them too many times.
Vera rose first, the younger child already in her arms. Mara shoved Perren toward her. Drax and Seris held the door. Ren stayed near Kael. Lira turned to the rear seam, already angry enough that the room had no excuse not to answer.
Sereh dropped to one knee beside the opening in the back wall.
The seam where they had sent the mouth relic deeper was still open, but only by a narrow hand-span. White cold drifted out of it in slow breaths.
Tovin joined her. Together they put both hands to the old seam and forced pale light down into it.
The lower road answered.
The opening widened.
Not enough for comfort.
Enough for a body.
Good.
Mira looked at Kael.
"We send the center first."
Kael heard the shape of that immediately.
Children.
Vera.
Mara.
Good.
Right.
Then the mark on his shoulder flared so hard his knees almost gave out.
The whole room felt it.
The front threshold.
The rear seam.
The floor.
Every old line in the shelter cell answered at once.
Sereh's head snapped toward him.
"Too late."
That changed everything.
The hunters outside heard it too.
The next strike at the doorway was not careful.
It was hard.
The whole threshold burst inward by a foot. One masked road-hunter forced an arm through, then a shoulder, hooked relic driving toward the floor seam like he intended to pin the room itself in place and climb through after.
Drax met him with the shield-frame and shoved.
The hunter came anyway.
Bad.
Very bad.
"The mark is pulling the room open," Mira said.
Kael looked at her. "Then cut it."
Ren turned sharply. "No."
Kael looked at him.
"If we don't—"
Ren's voice came low and hard.
"They want you to do that."
There.
That landed.
Because yes.
The White Between wanted him to choose clean pain over slower danger. The hunters wanted him to panic and become singular. The road wanted a line to settle around.
No.
The mark burned again.
This time he felt where.
Down.
The deeper road below the rear seam.
The mouth relic.
Not just connected.
Calling.
A route.
A destination.
A claim waiting to finish itself.
Mira saw the same thing in his face and cursed softly.
"The mouth is moving."
Everyone heard that.
Even the hunter forcing his way through the front threshold paused for one ugly heartbeat.
Good.
Let him.
Seris hit him across the wrist line and nearly took the hook relic out of his hand. Drax drove forward. Lira slammed a wall of pressure into the crack and bought them another second of broken stone and screaming pale seams.
The room was coming apart.
No more time.
Sereh pointed to the rear opening.
"Through in pairs. Now."
Vera went first with the younger child.
Good.
Mara shoved Perren after her and dropped in behind him. Tovin followed to catch the lower turn. The opening was too narrow. The road below too old. The passage taking them one answer at a time like it needed to consider each body before allowing it through.
Kael hated that.
The front threshold burst wider.
A second hunter forced his mask through the crack, then a hand, then a line-hook glowing pale white. He didn't go for Drax.
He went for the floor under Kael.
Of course he did.
The hook hit stone.
The mark on Kael's shoulder exploded with pain.
White lines jumped from the wound down into the shelter cell seam, turning the floor under him bright.
The hunter laughed once on the other side of the door.
Not triumph.
Recognition.
"He's answering."
No.
Ren hit the floor seam with current sharp enough to split the white line between the hook and Kael's mark. The connection flickered. Died. Returned weaker.
But it returned.
Too close now.
Too clear.
Mira turned from the rear seam and crossed the room in three fast steps.
Then she did the worst thing Kael had seen since the White Between started trying to know him.
She grabbed his face with both hands and forced him to look at her.
Not the floor.
Not the mark.
Her.
"Listen to me."
The whole room tightened.
Kael did.
Of course he did.
Her eyes were hard and alive and furious in exactly the right way.
"You do not answer the road first," she said. "You do not answer pain first. You answer us."
That hit.
Harder than the mark.
Harder than the room.
Harder than the hook-line trying to drag the floor toward him.
Because yes.
That was the whole story right there.
Not hunger.
Not singularity.
Not the road choosing.
The line first.
Kael sucked in one breath.
Then another.
The mark still burned.
The room still pulled.
The hunters still wanted him split off from everyone else.
No.
He looked past Mira to Ren.
Then Seris.
Then Drax at the broken doorway.
Then Lira holding the threshold together through sheer spite.
Then Vera and Mara already below with the children.
Then Nyx at the rear seam, looking like the dark itself had decided to become interested.
The line.
Not the road.
He slammed his palm down on the floor seam.
Not to open.
Not to answer.
To refuse.
The pale lines under him buckled.
The hunter's hook connection snapped.
The mark on his shoulder burned so hard he thought he might black out, then dropped into a low violent pulse instead of a full claim.
Good.
Not safe.
Better.
The rear opening widened by a fraction.
Sereh stared at Kael for one breath, then nodded once.
Interesting.
Approving.
No time to care.
"Now!" she shouted.
Lira went through first this time, almost falling in because apparently the road had personally offended her enough that balance no longer mattered. Nyx slipped after her. Ren shoved Kael toward the opening and Kael finally obeyed without trying to be noble about it.
Good.
He dropped into white cold and narrow stone and nearly landed on Tovin, who caught him, swore, and shoved him lower down the passage.
Above them, the shelter cell still shook with the hunters' assault.
Seris came through next.
Then Drax, somehow still dragging the shield-frame because Drax would probably haul that thing through death itself out of principle.
Mira and Sereh were last.
Of course.
The moment they crossed, the upper seam slammed shut.
Not gently.
The sound rolled down the passage like a tomb deciding it had had enough of visitors.
Darkness swallowed them for one breath.
Then pale seam-light woke under the floor again.
They were in another descent tunnel.
Of course they were.
Narrow.
Cold.
Steep.
The old white stone cut with darker vein-lines through it. No Whitefall patchwork here. No later repairs. Just older road-work and the sense that everything down here had been built to carry dangerous things away from human hands.
The mouth relic pulsed ahead somewhere below.
Closer than Kael wanted.
Farther than he could see.
The mark on his shoulder answered.
Not claiming now.
Tracking.
Bad.
But survivable.
Maybe.
Mara's voice came from below in the pale dark.
"Please tell me the next room is not worse."
Nobody answered.
That was answer enough.
Kael steadied himself against the wall, breathing hard.
Mira landed beside him.
Her hands still remembered where they had held his face.
He could tell.
Maybe she could too.
Good.
Ren came down a half step later and touched Kael's good shoulder once.
Ground.
Still there.
Good.
Far above them, muffled by too much stone, the horn sounded again.
Not close now.
But not gone.
The hunters had lost the room.
Had they lost the line?
