Chapter 130 - First Claim

The rear seam above them cracked wider.

Stone dust fell in a pale line from the ceiling.

Nobody in the lower chamber moved for one breath.

Then everybody did.

Seris stepped toward the center.

Drax turned fully toward the rear passage.

Ren moved closer to Kael.

Mara pulled Perren and the younger child tighter into the corner with Vera.

Lira swore under her breath.

Nyx slid away from the wall and disappeared toward the dead arch at the far end like the room had misplaced one of its own shadows.

Mira didn't look at the crack.

She looked at Kael.

"We choose now," she said.

The covered carriage pulsed beside her.

The pale mark on Kael's shoulder answered.

Two beats.

Two calls.

The same wrong shape trying to close from both sides.

No.

Kael looked from the carriage to the seam above them.

"You mean which one reaches me first."

Mira nodded once.

Sereh said, "If the hunters get the mark first, they claim you through the road."

Tovin added from the wall, "If the mouth gets you first, it claims you through passage."

Mara stared at them.

"I hate both options equally."

"Good," Lira said. "That means you're listening."

Fair.

The rear seam split another inch.

A pale line appeared in the crack.

Not light.

A blade edge.

The road-hunters weren't battering through.

They were opening the passage carefully.

That was worse.

Drax saw it too and tightened his grip on the shield-frame.

"Tell me the better bad answer."

Sereh's eyes flicked to Mira.

Then to the covered carriage.

"The mouth."

Silence.

Then Vera said, "Absolutely not."

Again: fair.

Kael looked at Sereh. "Why."

"Because mouths can be redirected."

Her gaze shifted to the crack above. "Hunters can't."

That landed.

Mira didn't argue with her.

That mattered more than anything else.

Seris heard it too.

"If we force the mouth to lock first, can we cut it loose after."

Mira answered without hesitation.

"Maybe."

Mara let out a broken laugh. "Every realm is cursed with that word."

Kael touched the pale lines spreading from the mark without meaning to.

They burned.

Not pain exactly.

Recognition.

The thing above knew where he was.

The thing beside him wanted to know him.

And the whole lower chamber felt like it was waiting to see which old system got to reduce him first.

No.

Not standing here.

Not while everybody else chose around him.

He looked at Mira.

"What does the mouth need."

Her face hardened.

"Contact."

Ren's head turned sharply. "No."

Kael looked at him.

Not because Ren was wrong.

Because Kael already knew the answer.

Of course it needed contact.

Of course it all kept coming back to contact and choice and wrong first knowing.

Sereh stepped in before the room could spiral.

"Not full contact."

That got everyone.

She pointed to the carriage.

To the pale seams in the floor.

To the dead arch behind Nyx.

"Guide it to a line. Give it direction. Let it lock to movement instead of a body."

There.

That was better.

Not good.

Better.

Mira saw it too.

Kael could tell.

Interesting.

Possible.

Awful.

Workable.

Tovin pushed off the wall. "Do it fast."

The crack above widened again.

This time a white hooked point came through, felt for the stone below, and withdrew.

Testing.

Measuring.

The hunters were almost in.

Seris made the call at once.

"Room positions."

Good.

The line moved on instinct now.

Drax at the rear passage with the shield-frame.

Seris beside him.

Lira and Vera pulling the children farther left into the deepest corner.

Mara staying with them, knife out, furious enough to count as a local climate.

Ren close to Kael.

Sereh and Tovin at the carriage with Mira.

Nyx a dark shape by the dead arch, one hand on the old seam like he was waiting for the room to choose whether it liked him enough to answer.

Kael stepped toward the carriage.

The covered plates over it had shifted. White light bled through the cracks in slow breaths.

The mark on his shoulder flared immediately.

Mira caught his wrist before he got too close.

"Not the housing."

"What then."

"The floor."

Good.

Specific.

Useful.

Kael dropped to one knee beside the carriage and pressed his hand to the pale seam running under it.

The old line below answered too fast.

Not because he opened it.

Because it had been waiting.

The white light in the carriage deepened.

The chamber seams lit.

The dead arch at the far end flickered once.

Nyx looked back over one shoulder. "That got its attention."

Understatement.

Lovely.

Mira tore the cover plate free.

The mouth relic opened.

Not fully.

Enough.

The pale opening in the relic housing widened into that smooth terrible shape, deeper than metal, deeper than stone, as if the road itself had learned how to make a hunger and then built a frame around it.

Kael felt it notice him.

No.

Mira hit the side of the housing with both hands and forced the opening downward toward the floor line.

"Take the road," she whispered. "Not him."

That hit Kael harder than it should have.

Not because of the words.

Because of how she said them.

Like this was not the first time she'd had to stand between an old thing and a person she refused to let it claim.

The rear seam above them split wider.

A masked face appeared in the crack for one blink and vanished again.

Then the first white hook punched fully through.

Drax met it with the shield-frame so hard the whole chamber rang.

The mouth relic answered.

White light shot down into the floor seam under Kael's hand.

The mark on his shoulder burned like a second mouth opening.

Kael hissed through his teeth and shoved harder against the line under the carriage.

Forward.

Take the road.

Not me.

The old seam flared.

The mouth relic hesitated.

Then chose.

The light bent.

Not toward Kael.

Toward the dead arch.

Good.

Very good.

Nyx saw it and immediately slammed his palm against the old stone under the arch seam.

The dead arch woke.

Not fully.

Not beautifully.

A thin white cut appeared down the center and stayed there, trembling.

The line.

A destination.

Passage.

The mouth liked that.

Mira bared her teeth. "Again."

Kael pushed.

Ren stepped in beside him and laid one hand to the floor seam too, current low and pale.

Ground.

Direction.

Hold.

The old line steadied.

The mouth relic opened wider and the light from it shot clean across the chamber into the dead arch.

The cut there widened.

Not enough for a body.

Enough for a mouth.

That was all they needed.

The first road-hunter forced half their body through the rear seam at the same moment.

White mask.

Dark wrap.

A hooked relic in one hand.

Seris hit them first.

Drax hit them second.

The hunter still came through.

Too fast.

Too controlled.

Bad.

Tovin met them with a white ring-blade drawn from somewhere inside his wrap and cut across the hook line before it could lock the room. The hunter twisted clear and drove forward anyway.

Not carriers, Kael thought.

Worse.

They think.

The children flinched back.

Mara stepped in front of them without even looking.

Vera said something low to Perren and the younger child that Kael couldn't hear over the noise.

The mouth relic screamed.

The dead arch answered.

The cut widened another foot.

Sereh looked from the open mouth to the opening arch and made the only decision left.

"Send it!"

Mira shoved.

Kael forced the floor line.

Ren kept it straight.

Nyx dragged the dead arch wider with one hand and what looked suspiciously like spite with the other.

The carriage didn't move.

Of course not.

Nothing simple.

Never.

"The cradle!" Lira shouted.

Right.

The wrecked vault carriage was still jammed against broken stone.

Drax couldn't leave the rear line.

Seris was locked with the hunter.

Tovin and Sereh were both in the worst part of the room.

Mara and Vera had the children.

That left—

Kael lunged forward.

Mira's head snapped toward him. "Don't let it—"

Too late.

He hit the side of the broken carriage with both hands and heaved.

The mark on his shoulder flared white-hot.

The mouth relic turned toward him.

Not the road.

Not the arch.

Him.

No.

Ren moved before the thing could complete it.

His hand hit Kael's chest and shoved him sideways off the direct line while his current slashed down the seam between the carriage and floor.

The carriage broke free.

The whole wrecked cradle shot forward.

The mouth relic snapped toward the dead arch instead of Kael and vanished into the widening cut with a scream of white light.

The chamber exploded.

The dead arch burst wider.

The room seams all lit at once.

The rear crack blew open and a second hunter started coming through.

The first hunter twisted free of Seris's strike and slammed Tovin into the wall.

Mara yelled.

Lira hit the floor with a burst of pressure.

Vera pulled the children down.

Nyx vanished through the arch after the relic.

Everything happened in one breath.

Kael hit the floor hard, shoulder burning, chest aching where Ren shoved him clear.

Then he saw the worst part.

The mark had changed again.

Not just white lines now.

The half-mouth had opened wider.

The road-hunter nearest the rear seam saw it too.

Through the mask, through the chaos, Kael felt the exact second the hunter understood.

Not a chase anymore.

Not a search.

A claim.

The hunter looked straight at him and said, with terrible certainty:

"There."

And Kael finally understood why Mira had been so afraid of the wrong thing reaching him first.
