Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 - Elina

Elina learned the rule by accident.

She wasn't searching for salvation anymore—only understanding. The difference mattered. Hope distorted things. Clarity did not.

She sat in the back corner of the university archive, surrounded by records no one cared to digitize. Personal journals. Marginal notes. Testimonies written by hands that trembled as they confessed what they had survived.

One phrase appeared again and again, never explained outright, only implied:

The willing heart breaks the circle.

Elina's breath slowed.

She followed the references backward—across languages, across centuries—until the pattern became impossible to ignore. Curses bound to blood. To mirrors. To paired souls.

They did not end with resistance.

They ended with consent.

Elina closed her eyes.

So that was it.

Not a loophole. Not a trick. A choice so cruel it disguised itself as mercy.

That night, the dream met her halfway.

She stood in the village square again, rain soaking her hair, mud clinging to her feet. The witch stood before her—not angry, not vengeful. Just tired.

"You understand now," the witch said.

Elina nodded. "One of us has to accept it."

"Yes.

"And if neither of us does?"

The witch's gaze softened. "Then time takes both."

The number burned overhead.

75

Elina woke without panic.

Instead, there was a strange calm settling into her bones—heavy, irreversible. She sat up and reached for her notebook, but stopped herself.

This truth did not belong on paper.

Alina burst into the apartment later that day, eyes wild, breath uneven. "You met her alone,"

Elina said quietly.

Alina froze. "You knew."

"You always move toward danger," Elina replied. "It's how you love."

Alina's expression cracked. "She offered me a way out."

Elina's chest tightened. "And?"

"And I said no."

Elina closed her eyes.

That night, as Alina slept restlessly, Elina lay awake beside the wall they shared and made a decision that felt older than this life.

If willingness ended the curse—

Then Elina would be the one to offer it.

Not because she wanted to die.

But because Alina would never stop fighting.

And someone had to choose stillness.

Outside, unseen and patient, the countdown continued.
