Chapter 47 - Chapter XLVII: Taylor

As the laughter calmed down, Julia sighed for a second as she took a big breath.

"I don't have the energy to do any activities today. So we will be staying at camp. It was... a rough night to say the least."

As she looked at Kate and Ray.

A few people snorted quietly.

Marco looked down, trying not to laugh again.

Dylan failed completely.

Kate kept her eyes on her plate.

Not moving.

Ray shifted slightly in his seat, clearing his throat.

"…yeah," he muttered under his breath.

Julia held the look for a second longer—

Then straightened.

"Try not to destroy anything today," she added, dry.

A couple of laughs followed.

Kate didn't react.

Ray didn't look at her.

But he smiled.

Just a little.

"Alright, you fucking degenerates!" Jake stood up when he saw Julia was far away, but she still heard him as she gently turned around, rolling her eyes and going inside her cabin. "We are all staying at camp, and that means we need to do a fucking party!"

A few heads turned immediately.

Marco grinned.

"Now we're talking."

Dylan raised his hand like it was already decided.

"I'm in."

Kate didn't look up.

"…of course you are."

Ray glanced at her for a second—

Then back at Jake.

A small smile creeping in again.

Across the tables, a couple more people started reacting, the energy picking up fast.

Jake spread his arms slightly, already feeding off it.

"That's what I like to hear."

And than... Ray stood up with Kate's angry face looking up at him. "You're only young once, right?" as he took a small bottle of vodka and downed it.

Jake screamed.

"YEAAAAAAAH!!!!!! That's what the fuck im talking bout man!"

The table erupted again.

Marco slammed his hand down, laughing.

"HE'S BACK!"

Dylan stood up halfway, pointing at Ray.

"See? I told you!"

Kate just stared at him.

Not impressed.

Not amused.

Ray lowered the bottle, exhaling slightly, like he already felt it.

He glanced at her—

A small, careless grin.

Kate shook her head once.

"…unbelievable."

And than... Kate went full british. "You got so drunk yesterday you don't remember a thing. Now you're gonna go straight to drinking at 8 am?! You fucking dickhead! We had to get you to hospital, now go and shove some blue pills up your ass. I heard the high is better. Fucking junky." She said standing up and walking up towards the cabin.

The table went dead silent for a second.

Marco blinked.

"…damn."

Dylan let out a low whistle.

Jake just stared—

Then burst out laughing again.

Ray stood there, still holding the empty bottle.

The grin faded.

"…okay," he muttered under his breath.

He watched her walk away—

Not following.

Not yet.

"You know what?!" Jake screamed towards Kate as she turned around looking like she might wipe out his bloodline. "It's not his fucking fault you're no fun!"

Kate stopped.

Slowly turned.

The look she gave him—

Enough.

The table went quiet again.

Marco leaned back.

"…he's dead."

Dylan covered his mouth, already losing it.

Ray closed his eyes for a second.

"…Jake—"

Too late.

Kate took a step forward.

"Say that again."

Calm.

Way too calm.

Jake held her gaze for a second—

Then grinned.

Like he couldn't help himself.

"Oh, I will."

"You are... a fucking annoying brat."

Jake said it like he meant it.

Kate didn't react right away.

Just stared at him.

The air shifted.

Marco leaned back.

"…yeah, that was a mistake."

Dylan stopped laughing.

Watching now.

Ray shifted where he stood, glancing between them.

"…alright—"

Kate took a small step forward.

"Finished?"

"What, you gonna hit me now? Because i'm all feminist. I'm gonna give it back."

Jake stood his ground.

Still smirking.

Kate tilted her head slightly.

Not amused.

"Try it," she said quietly.

The table went completely still.

Marco leaned back even further.

"…this is getting bad."

Dylan didn't say anything now.

Just watching.

Ray stepped forward slightly.

"Jake—"

Jake didn't look at him.

Still locked on Kate.

Kate didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Just waiting.

"You all guys remember Kate from last year right?" Jake said, jumping on the table. "She was all saint Marie, until she got drunk one night..."

A few people shifted.

Some already knowing where this was going.

"Me, Marco and Dylan went to look for her right? And we saw her getting banged by that counselor that quit last year."

Silence.

Heavy.

Marco's face dropped instantly.

"Jake, shut the fuck up," he said, low.

Dylan looked away.

Didn't say a word.

Ray didn't move.

But his jaw tightened.

Kate stood there.

Still.

Not looking at anyone now.

Just at Jake.

The air felt different.

Sharp.

Jake looked around, like he expected laughs—

Didn't get them.

A few people looked uncomfortable.

Others just stared.

Kate took a slow breath.

Didn't say anything.

Not yet.

But instead of losing it towards Jake... Ray looked at Kate. "So you made all that fuss about getting fingered when you got fucked by a random teacher while drunk? I'm so fucking done with you." Ray snapped screaming towards her.

The words hit.

Hard.

Kate didn't move.

Didn't say anything.

Just stood there.

Ray turned away first.

Sharp.

Like he couldn't stand there anymore.

And started walking toward the camp's entrance.

The silence that followed was heavy.

Marco stared at him, disbelief written all over his face.

"…what the fuck, man."

Dylan shook his head slowly.

Jake stood on the table—

Grinning.

Kate remained where she was.

Still.

Not reacting.

Not yet.

And than... Kate kicked Jake's legs as he fell from the table hitting his head.

It happened fast.

Too fast.

Jake hit the ground with a dull thud.

"Fuck—!"

He groaned, holding the back of his head.

No one laughed.

Kate stood there.

Still.

Then—

"…you're all the same."

Quiet.

Flat.

She didn't look at Jake.

Didn't look at anyone.

Marco didn't say anything.

Dylan looked down.

Jake sat up slowly, rubbing his head—

Not smiling anymore.

Across the camp, Ray kept walking.

But slower now.

Kate turned.

And walked the opposite direction.

No rush.

No emotion.

Just distance.

The table stayed silent.

No one moved.

His pace quickened.

He grabbed the keys for his own car that his parents left him.

As he entered it... he just sat there for a second.

Hands on the wheel.

Breathing.

Back at the tables—

Kate's face didn't stay neutral this time.

Her lips pressed together—

Then trembled.

"…fuck you," she whispered under her breath.

Her eyes burned, but she blinked fast.

Not letting it fall.

Not here.

Her chest rose sharply once—

Then she turned away from everyone.

In the car—

Ray reached to the side, grabbing the bottle.

Opened it.

Took a long drink.

Then another.

His head dropped back against the seat.

Eyes closed.

Not thinking.

Just drinking.

But as she heard the engine, between rage and anger... there was fear.

Kate lost it.

"…no, no—"

Tears filled her eyes instantly.

She turned and rushed toward Julia's cabin, wiping her face but failing.

"JULIA!"

Her voice cracked as she hit the door, panic fully taking over.

"He's driving—"

Julia opened the door quickly, already alert.

"What—?"

"He drank—he took the car—he's not okay—" Kate rushed out, words breaking over each other.

Her hands were shaking.

"I didn't—he just—he left and now—"

She wiped her face again, breath uneven.

"He's gonna hurt himself," she said, quieter now.

Julia's expression changed instantly.

Serious.

"Where is he?"

"he drove off."

Kate's voice dropped.

Barely steady.

Julia didn't waste a second.

"Keys," she said, already turning.

Kate blinked.

"What—?"

"To my car. Now."

Kate fumbled for a moment, then followed, still trying to catch her breath.

"He was drinking—he's not thinking—"

"I know," Julia cut in, sharp.

She grabbed her keys, moving fast.

"Get in."

Kate didn't hesitate this time.

"What the hell happened?"

Kate looked at her.

Trying to speak through it.

"You remember… Counselor Taylor?"

Her voice broke on the name.

Julia paused for a split second—

Then her expression hardened.

"…yeah."

Kate shook her head, wiping her face again, breathing uneven.

"They said—he said—" she couldn't even finish it properly.

Her chest tightened.

"He told everyone."

"I kicked his ass out when i found out, he took advantage off you knowing what you went through."

Kate started sobbing even more.

"And now Ray... Ray thinks i'm just a whore."

Julia stopped for a second.

Turned to her.

"Hey."

Sharp.

Not angry.

Just firm.

"He doesn't get to decide that."

Kate shook her head, crying harder.

"But he—he said it—"

"I don't care what he said," Julia cut in.

Her voice steady.

"We deal with him later."

A beat.

Right back to focus.

"Right now we find him."
