Chapter 89 - Chapter 89: The Path Through Fire.

The journey to the Forge of Flames began before sunrise.

The volcanic plains of Ignis were unlike anything Lyra had imagined. Rivers of molten rock carved glowing paths through the mountains, while ash drifted lazily from the sky, covering the black earth like gray snow. Every breath carried the scent of sulfur and smoke.

Aurelia led the way with practiced confidence.

She navigated the narrow stone trails without hesitation, stepping over cracks that revealed glowing magma beneath.

"The safest routes change every day," she explained. "The mountains are alive. If you stop paying attention, they'll swallow you."

Rylan glanced nervously at a nearby fissure.

"I suddenly miss solid ground."

Selene smirked.

"You complained about walking through forests yesterday."

"I'd like to apologize to every tree I ever insulted."

The light-hearted exchange drew a small smile from Lyra. After everything they had faced in Elysia, it was comforting to hear laughter again.

Kael, however, remained alert.

His gaze swept across the cliffs surrounding them.

"We're being watched."

Aurelia nodded.

"You noticed."

She pointed toward the rocky slopes.

"They've been following us since we entered the valley."

At first, Lyra saw nothing.

Then the shadows shifted.

Figures emerged from behind the rocks.

Men and women dressed in dark crimson armor stepped onto the trail, carrying spears and curved swords. Their armor was scarred from countless battles, and none of them looked surprised to see Aurelia.

Instead, they looked disappointed.

A tall warrior with braided black hair stepped forward.

"You came back."

Aurelia rested her spear against her shoulder.

"I told you I would."

"You should have stayed away."

His eyes moved to Lyra and her companions.

"And you've brought outsiders."

"They're here to help."

The warrior shook his head.

"No one can help us."

His voice held no anger—only exhaustion.

"The Forge is sealed."

"The Guardian refuses to leave."

"And every attempt to reach her ends in death."

Kael stepped forward.

"If that's true, why are you still here?"

The man looked toward the volcano.

"Because someone has to keep people away."

Aurelia lowered her voice.

"This is Captain Darius."

"He commands the Ash Guard."

Darius folded his arms.

"I command what's left of them."

Lyra noticed the way his soldiers avoided eye contact.

They weren't afraid of battle.

They were carrying the weight of repeated failure.

A sudden rumble interrupted the conversation.

The ground shook beneath their feet.

One of the younger soldiers pointed toward the mountains.

"The western ridge!"

A section of the cliff collapsed, sending burning rocks crashing into the valley.

The Ash Guard reacted instantly.

"Civilians!" Darius shouted.

"Move them!"

Without another word, his soldiers sprinted toward a nearby mining settlement nestled against the mountainside.

Aurelia didn't hesitate.

"We're going."

The group followed.

As they reached the settlement, chaos had already begun.

Families rushed through the streets while molten boulders crashed through rooftops. Smoke filled the air, making it difficult to see.

A child stood frozen in the middle of the road.

He stared at the falling rocks, unable to move.

His mother screamed his name from the opposite side of the street.

Lyra ran toward him.

"Stay where you are!"

A massive boulder broke free from the cliff.

It was falling directly toward the child.

Kael launched himself forward without thinking.

White flames burst from his sword as he swung upward.

The blade struck the boulder.

Instead of shattering it, the impact changed its course just enough.

The burning rock crashed harmlessly into an empty warehouse.

The shockwave threw Kael to the ground.

Before Lyra could reach him, another figure rushed past.

Aurelia.

She grabbed the frightened child and carried him to safety.

The boy clung tightly to her armor, trembling.

"It's all right," she said gently.

"You're safe now."

Lyra paused.

This was different from the fearless warrior who had laughed while fighting a magma beast.

There was kindness beneath her courage.

She simply didn't show it often.

By sunset, the settlement had been evacuated.

The fires were finally under control.

Darius approached the group while watching his soldiers distribute food and water.

"I owe you an apology."

Kael brushed ash from his coat.

"For what?"

"I judged you before I knew you."

His eyes rested on Lyra.

"You risked your lives for people you've never met."

Lyra smiled.

"We've learned that every life is worth protecting."

Darius was silent for a moment.

Then he reached into his cloak and removed a weathered map.

He unfolded it carefully.

"This is the only path to the Forge that hasn't collapsed."

Aurelia looked surprised.

"You never showed anyone this."

"I didn't trust anyone."

He handed the map to Lyra.

"But perhaps that's been our greatest mistake."

The silver compass at Lyra's side glowed warmly, as though confirming his decision.

Hope wasn't changing only the Hearts.

It was changing the people around them.

As night settled over Ignis, the group studied the map beneath the light of a campfire.

The path led through a place marked with only two words:

The Trial Pass.

Aurelia's expression turned serious.

"I've never crossed it."

"Why not?" Rylan asked.

She looked into the fire.

"Because no one who entered…"

"…ever came back."

The flames suddenly flared higher.

A voice echoed from the darkness beyond the camp.

"That isn't true."

Everyone sprang to their feet.

Standing at the edge of the firelight was an elderly man wrapped in a soot-covered cloak.

His left arm was heavily scarred, and he carried a blacksmith's hammer instead of a weapon.

He looked directly at Lyra.

"I crossed the Trial Pass."

"And I know why the Guardian sealed herself away."
