Late the next morning, I woke up, patting the bed next to me. In my sleepy haze, I expected to feel Hannah's body there, to smell her soft hair. Then I remembered - she wasn't there.
The weight settled back in my chest, and I groaned. I didn't want to get up and face the day without her.
I turned over my phone on the bedside table, having kept it close to me in case there was any news of Hannah. There were a ton of messages, my office wanting to know where I was. I got dressed and called my cousin at the office.
"Rachel," I said to my cousin over the phone, "Hannah's been kidnapped. I've been working with the police and the FBI all night. I won't be in today. Can you handle that meeting with our new client? And cancel the rest."
"Are you okay? You sound - I don't know - shaken," Rachel said.
"I'm fine. It's Hannah I'm worried about."
"Just let me know if you need anything else. I'll get to work then," Rachel said before hanging up.
