Chapter 11 - Her reward.

Dinner ended the way it usually did in the Hayakawa household—quiet, orderly, and composed. The clinking of utensils had faded, and the table was cleared with practiced efficiency. Their mother had already left the room, her presence lingering only in the stillness she always seemed to leave behind.

Rei stepped out into the hallway, loosening his collar slightly as he exhaled. The day had been long, though not in any visible way.

Results had come and gone, reactions had settled, and yet something remained unresolved beneath it all.

He paused for a moment, then reached into his pocket.

A small, neatly wrapped chocolate bar.

He stared at it briefly, as if reconsidering something—then turned and walked toward Shiori's room.

A soft knock.

"Come in," her voice responded from inside.

Rei opened the door.

Shiori sat at her desk, her posture straight, a book open in front of her though she wasn't actively reading. The light from the lamp cast a soft glow over her, highlighting the calm, controlled expression she always carried.

"You're still studying?" Rei asked.

"Not really," she replied, closing the book gently. "Just going over a few things."

He stepped inside, closing the door behind him.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Then—

Rei walked closer and placed the chocolate on her desk.

"…For you," he said.

Shiori looked at it, then at him.

"A reward," he added, almost casually. "For your result."

A small pause followed.

Then, unexpectedly—

Her expression softened.

Not dramatically.

Just enough to be noticeable.

"…Thank you," she said quietly.

She picked it up, turning it slightly in her hands as if inspecting it, though there was nothing particularly special about it.

Just chocolate.

Simple.

Ordinary.

And yet—

She stood.

Stepped closer to him.

And without hesitation—

Wrapped her arms around him.

Rei blinked in surprise, his body stiffening slightly at the sudden contact.

"…Shiori?"

"You're the best," she said softly, her voice close to him.

There was no teasing in it.

No hidden meaning.

Just warmth.

He hesitated for a moment.

Then, slowly, he relaxed.

"…It's just chocolate," he muttered.

"That's not the point."

A faint silence settled between them as she remained like that for a second longer before pulling away.

Her movements returned to their usual composure, but the softness hadn't entirely disappeared.

She unwrapped the chocolate carefully, the sound of the foil quiet in the still room.

Breaking off a small piece, she brought it to her lips and took a bite.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then—

"…It's good," she murmured.

Rei leaned lightly against the side of her desk, watching her.

"Of course it is."

"You didn't make it."

"I picked it well."

"That's debatable."

A faint hint of amusement touched his expression.

"…You're hard to please."

"I'm honest."

She broke off another piece.

Then paused.

Her gaze shifted toward him.

Without a word, she held it out.

Rei looked at it.

Then at her.

"…You're serious?"

"Yes."

"You already bit it."

"That doesn't matter."

He sighed quietly, though there was no real resistance in it.

"…You're strange sometimes."

"You've said that before."

"And I meant it."

Still—

He leaned forward slightly and took the offered piece.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

The gesture was small.

Simple.

But familiar.

Shiori watched him for a second longer than necessary before looking away.

"…Next time," she said.

Rei raised an eyebrow slightly. "Next time?"

She nodded, her gaze lowering slightly to the remaining chocolate in her hand.

"It won't be a tie."

Her tone was calm.

Certain.

Rei studied her expression.

There was no hesitation in it.

No doubt.

"…You're confident," he said.

"I have to be."

"Why?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she took another small bite of the chocolate, as if buying herself a moment.

Then—

"…Because losing isn't an option," she said quietly.

The words lingered in the space between them.

Rei exhaled softly.

"…You're taking this seriously."

"I always do."

"That's not what I meant."

Shiori looked at him again.

This time, her gaze held something sharper.

More focused.

"I know," she said.

A brief silence followed.

Then—

Rei straightened slightly, pushing himself

away from the desk.

"…Alright," he said. "Then I won't hold back either."

For a fraction of a second—

Something shifted.

Not hostility.

Not distance.

But something closer to recognition.

Shiori's lips curved ever so slightly.

"…Good," she said.

The chocolate remained between them.

Half-finished.

Shared.

A small thing.

An ordinary thing.

And yet—

It marked something new.

Not the end of something.

But the beginning of a line—

Neither of them intended to cross lightly.
