Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE:THE PROPOSAL

Rain fell heavily over the city, turning the bright evening lights into blurry streaks of gold and white.

Lara Williams stood under the broken bus stop roof, hugging her thin cardigan tightly around herself as cold wind brushed against her damp skin. Her shoes were soaked. Her hair clung to her face. Her stomach twisted painfully from hunger and anxiety.

Everything had gone wrong.

Just this morning, she still believed she had control over her life. She had woken up early, ironed her only formal blouse carefully, and walked into the publishing office with hope beating wildly in her chest.

By afternoon, that hope had been crushed without mercy.

"You're fired."

The words still echoed in her ears like a cruel joke.

She swallowed hard, blinking away the tears that threatened to spill again. She had begged. She had explained. She had promised to work harder.

But none of it mattered.

The company was downsizing.

She was expendable.

A sudden loud honk snapped her back to reality as a sleek black car sped past, splashing muddy water dangerously close to her feet.

Lara sighed tiredly.

Even the universe seemed determined to humiliate her today.

Her phone buzzed weakly in her hand.

She stared at the cracked screen before answering.

"Hello…?"

Her landlord's voice came through immediately, sharp and impatient.

"Miss Williams, this is the last warning. If you don't pay your rent by tomorrow morning, I will change the locks."

Her heart dropped.

"Sir please… I just lost my job today. Give me a few days. I'm trying—"

"I've already given you weeks."

The line went dead.

Lara slowly lowered the phone.

Her hands trembled.

No job. No money. No home.

And her father…

Her chest tightened painfully at the thought.

Earlier that afternoon, the hospital had called again. His condition had worsened. The surgery needed to happen soon. Without it…

She couldn't even finish the thought.

Her vision blurred as silent tears finally escaped.

"What am I going to do…?"

The question slipped from her lips in a broken whisper.

At that exact moment, another car pulled up in front of her.

This one didn't splash water.

It stopped.

Perfectly.

Deliberately.

Lara frowned slightly, wiping her cheeks quickly. The car was unlike anything she had ever seen up close — long, glossy, intimidating. The tinted window slowly rolled down.

A man sat inside.

Even in the dim rain-lit evening, she could tell he was dangerously handsome.

Sharp jaw. Dark eyes. Impeccably tailored suit.

He looked like someone who owned the world.

More importantly… he looked like someone who didn't belong anywhere near her.

"Miss Lara Williams," he said calmly.

Her stomach flipped.

"How… do you know my name?"

"I know many things."

His voice was deep. Controlled. Powerful.

It made her uneasy.

"I'm not interested in whatever you're selling," she muttered quickly, turning slightly away.

"I'm offering you a solution."

That made her pause.

Slowly… she looked back at him.

"A solution…?"

"Yes."

The car door opened smoothly.

The man stepped out into the rain without hesitation, as if the weather itself feared touching him.

He was tall.

Very tall.

Lara suddenly felt small… fragile… exposed.

He stopped just inches away from her.

Close enough for her to notice the faint scent of expensive cologne.

Close enough for her to feel her heart begin to race for reasons she didn't understand.

"My name is Alexander Knight," he said.

The name sounded familiar.

Important.

But her exhausted brain refused to process it.

"Okay…" she said cautiously.

"What do you want from me?"

His lips curved slightly.

"Marriage."

The word hit her like lightning.

"What?!"

"I want you to marry me."

Lara stared at him in complete disbelief.

This had to be a joke.

A cruel prank.

Or maybe she had finally gone insane from stress.

"You don't even know me," she said slowly.

"I know enough."

He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a thin elegant folder.

Inside… was a document.

He handed it to her.

Her fingers hesitated before taking it.

The paper was thick. Expensive.

Official.

Her eyes scanned the bold heading.

Marriage Contract Agreement.

Her breath caught.

"This is ridiculous," she whispered.

"Read page three."

She flipped it open with shaking hands.

Her eyes widened.

All hospital bills… cleared.

Monthly allowance… more money than she had ever imagined.

Luxury accommodation.

Security.

Protection.

Her rent problem… solved.

Her father's surgery… guaranteed.

Her entire life… instantly changed.

"What's the catch?" she asked hoarsely.

Alexander didn't blink.

"You will live as my wife for one year."

"One year…"

"Yes."

"No love," he added calmly.

"No emotional expectations. No children. No interference in my personal matters."

Lara's heart twisted strangely.

"And after one year?"

"We divorce."

So simple.

So cold.

"So… I'm basically being rented," she said bitterly.

"You are being saved."

His gaze locked onto hers.

"From homelessness. From debt. From losing your father."

Her defenses began to crumble.

He wasn't wrong.

That was the terrifying part.

Rain continued to pour around them like the world was holding its breath.

"What do you get from this?" she whispered.

"My inheritance depends on my marital status."

The honesty shocked her.

"So this is business," she said.

"Yes."

Her mind spun wildly.

This was insane.

Dangerous.

But also…

Her father's smiling face flashed in her mind.

The eviction notice.

The empty fridge.

The fear.

Her fingers tightened around the contract.

"What if I say no?"

Alexander leaned closer.

His voice dropped.

"Then tomorrow… your problems remain yours alone."

Silence stretched between them.

Her heart pounded violently.

This wasn't romance.

This wasn't fate.

This was survival.

Slowly…

Very slowly…

Lara picked up the pen he offered.

Her signature felt heavier than chains.

As the ink touched paper, she had no idea she had just signed away not only her freedom…

But also her heart.
