Chapter 12 - Episode 12: The Night They Tried to Leave

The clock showed 2:47 AM.

The world outside was asleep.

But Meera and Rani were not.

Their bags were ready.

Not heavy with things…

but heavy with everything they were leaving behind.

Meera stood near the door for a moment.

Just staring at it.

Like if she looked long enough, it might change into a different ending.

Rani spoke softly:

"Once we step out… there's no coming back to this version of life."

Meera nodded slowly.

"I know."

But her voice trembled slightly.

Because knowing something… and living it… are two different things.

She opened the door.

Cold air rushed in.

And for a second…

it felt like freedom.

They stepped outside.

Quiet street.

Empty road.

Streetlights blinking like tired witnesses.

They started walking.

Fast.

Not running yet.

But not slow anymore either.

Meera's heart was loud.

Too loud.

Every sound felt like danger.

Every shadow felt like judgment.

Rani looked back once.

Nothing.

Just darkness.

"Let's go," she whispered.

But fate doesn't always allow quiet exits.

A phone rang.

Meera froze.

Rani stopped immediately.

Meera's phone.

Unknown number.

She didn't want to pick it up.

But her fingers moved anyway.

"Hello?" she answered.

Silence on the other side.

Then a voice.

Cold.

Familiar.

Her father.

"I know where you are going."

Meera's blood turned cold.

Rani stepped closer.

"What did he say?" she whispered.

Meera couldn't speak at first.

Then finally:

"How…"

Her father continued:

"You think you can disappear from your life? From your name? From your family?"

His voice got sharper.

"Come back now. Or don't come back at all."

Click.

The call ended.

Silence.

Heavy silence.

Rani immediately understood.

"He found out?"

Meera nodded slowly.

For a few seconds, neither moved.

The street suddenly didn't feel empty anymore.

It felt watched.

"We still go," Rani said firmly.

Meera looked at her.

"But he knows."

Rani stepped closer.

"Then we go faster."

And they started moving again.

Quick steps now.

Almost running.

But behind them…

a car engine started.

Meera turned slightly.

Headlights.

Far behind.

Slowly approaching.

Her heart dropped.

"They're following us," she whispered.

Rani grabbed her hand.

"Don't stop."

They ran.

Footsteps. Breath. Fear.

Everything mixed into one sound.

The city felt different now.

Like it had turned against them.

Meera stumbled slightly.

Rani caught her immediately.

"No falling," she said firmly.

"Why is this happening…" Meera whispered while running.

Rani didn't answer.

Because there was no time for philosophy.

Only survival.

The car got closer.

A horn.

Meera turned back for a split second.

And saw it clearly.

Her father wasn't alone.

There were others.

Family members.

Anger.

Control.

Decision.

They weren't chasing.

They were claiming.

Rani pulled Meera into a narrow lane.

"Here!"

They turned sharply.

Dark alley.

Silent.

Tight space.

They hid behind a wall.

Holding their breath.

Footsteps passed outside.

Slow.

Searching.

Meera covered her mouth to stop breathing too loudly.

Her body shaking.

Rani held her hand tightly.

"I've got you," she whispered.

The footsteps paused.

Silence again.

Longer this time.

Then slowly…

they moved away.

Meera exhaled shakily.

But Rani didn't relax.

Because she knew something important.

"This isn't over," she said quietly.

Meera closed her eyes.

"I know."

They waited a few more minutes.

Then slowly stepped out.

The road was empty again.

But not safe.

Rani looked at Meera.

"We can't go where we planned anymore."

Meera nodded.

"Then where do we go?"

Rani thought for a moment.

Then said:

"Somewhere they won't expect us."

A pause.

Then:

"Somewhere we stop running… and start surviving."

Meera looked at her.

Not fully sure.

But trusting.

And for the first time that night…

they didn't move forward with fear.

They moved forward with determination.

Behind them, the city stayed awake.

Watching.

Waiting.

But they were no longer just escaping.

They were becoming harder to catch.
