Chapter 5 - Episode 5: When Love Becomes a Target

Meera and Rani didn't tell anyone they met again.

Not because they were ashamed.

But because they were tired of losing things every time the world found out the truth.

For a few days, it felt like breathing after drowning.

Simple things.

Coffee together in silence.

Walking without explaining.

Sitting in the same place without fear.

No labels.

No permission.

Just presence.

Rani looked at Meera one evening and said softly,

"You're quieter now."

Meera smiled faintly. "I learned how to survive silence."

Rani shook her head.

"No… you learned how to disappear in it."

That sentence stayed between them.

Because it was true.

But peace never lasts long in their world.

It started with a photo.

A blurry image.

Meera and Rani sitting together near the old bookstore.

Nothing inappropriate. Nothing wrong.

Just two people existing too close in a world that hated closeness when it didn't fit rules.

But captions don't need truth.

Only intention.

"They are together again."

That was enough.

Within hours, it spread.

College groups. Old contacts. Family networks.

Like fire finding dry leaves.

Meera's phone rang first.

Her mother.

Then her father.

Then silence after that.

A silence that felt worse than shouting.

Rani saw it next.

Her NGO office manager called her in.

The tone was different.

Careful.

Cold.

"We're receiving complaints," he said.

"People are uncomfortable with your… situation."

Rani stared at him.

"My situation?"

He avoided her eyes.

"Maybe you should take a break."

She understood immediately.

Not fired.

Not punished.

Just removed.

Quietly.

Like she didn't matter enough to fight.

That evening, Rani stood outside the building for a long time.

Meera arrived later.

And knew something was wrong without a single word.

"They saw us," Rani said finally.

Meera closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry…"

Rani cut her off.

"No."

A pause.

"This is not your fault."

But guilt doesn't listen to logic.

Only fear.

Meera whispered:

"I shouldn't have come back."

Rani stepped closer.

"And I shouldn't have let you go in the first place."

A long silence.

The city moved around them like nothing was happening.

But their world was collapsing again.

Then came the worst part.

Meera's father arrived.

In person.

He didn't shout at first.

He looked at Rani like she was a mistake standing in front of him.

Then at Meera.

Like she was disappointment.

"You chose this again?" he asked quietly.

Meera's voice shook.

"I didn't choose trouble… I chose her."

That sentence broke something in the air.

Her father's expression hardened.

"You will come home tonight."

Meera stepped back.

"No."

That single word changed everything.

Rani grabbed her hand lightly.

Not stopping her.

Just grounding her.

Meera looked at her father again.

For the first time… no fear in her voice.

"I am not leaving her."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Her father laughed once.

Not humor.

Disbelief.

"You think this is love?"

Meera replied softly:

"Yes."

That was the moment everything snapped.

"You are destroying your life," he said sharply.

"And for what? A phase? A mistake?"

Rani stepped forward slightly.

But Meera stopped her.

Because this time…

she wanted to speak.

"If loving her is a mistake," Meera said, tears forming,

"then I don't want to be right."

People had started watching now.

Whispers again.

Phones again.

Judgment again.

Rani whispered:

"Meera… stop."

But Meera shook her head.

"No… not this time."

Her father's voice dropped dangerously low.

"If you choose her… you lose this family."

Silence.

A final line.

A final threat.

Meera looked at Rani.

For a long time.

And Rani didn't speak.

Because she knew.

This wasn't just about love anymore.

It was about survival.

Meera finally turned back to her father.

Her voice broke…

but stayed firm.

"Then I guess I lose a family that never really had me."

Gasps.

Whispers.

Shock.

Her father walked away without another word.

And for the first time…

Meera didn't run after him.

But when she turned to Rani…

she was shaking.

Not from fear.

From cost.

Rani held her.

Silently.

Because there was nothing left to fix.

Only to survive.
