Chapter 32 - Demon Investigator

Max beamed a smile and enthusiastically said, "Thank you, Sister Elira."

Sister Elira radiated a sparkling smile. "It should be us thanking you.

Alright. You should inform the Lieutenant about this, so he can reward you."

Max nodded. "I will. I'll take a leave now, Sister Elira."

"Go ahead."

Max turned around and walked through the hallway.

Unbeknownst to him, Sister Elira's sparkling smile faded as tears began to crawl out of her eyelids.

She dropped to the floor and continued to weep after some time.

Until she suddenly stood up, left the Chapel of Sustenance, and continued her daily life, as though nothing happened…

Max knew where to find Lieutenant Garrick. He was in the Command Hall.

The Command Hall was pretty much the same as the police station back on Earth.

Lieutenant Garrick shouldered the responsibility of maintaining public order, enforcing local laws for the benefit of the village, and taking the lead if a monster invasion would occur.

Just because he was a lieutenant doesn't mean he was the strongest. He was also a B-Rank NPC, similar to the instructors.

He chose the class War Commander at B-Rank, solidifying his position as Lieutenant that oversees the Greyfen Village.

He also has a subordinate. Most of them were to entertain inquiries that didn't need his attention.

He was currently at his office, reading paper after paper about the current ongoing report about the occurrence inside the village.

Suddenly, a soft knock echoed on his door.

"Come in."

A D-Rank Warrior entered and bowed deeply. "Liuetenant, Archmage Arlen's personal student wants to meet you."

The lieutenant's eyes sparkled. He was currently reading a paper on his grasp delivered by Archmage Arlen by himself.

He stood up and walked towards the door, "Let me meet the hero personally."

The D-Rank Warrior was shocked and was befuddled.

The Lieutenant simply gave an ambiguous smile at him as they left his office…

Max was currently waiting at the lobby.

When he saw a giant-like figure, wearing a uniform, seemingly more imposing than D-Rank Warrior, while exuding an oppressive aura, Max was certain it was Lieutenant Garrick.

He abruptly stood up and was about to greet him when Lieutenant Garrick's pace quickened and suddenly arrived in front of him.

Wow, he's huge. That was Max thought as he realized his eye level was only at Lieutenant Garrick's chest.

Suddenly, Lieutenant Garrick grabbed his arm pit and raised him… easily.

Max was dumbfounded.

After being raised high, Max could see the Lieutenant's face up close.

His face was clean and his eyebrows were sharp.

Despite wearing a hat, Max thought. He's bald.

Lieutenant Garrick suddenly said, his voice thundered around, "So, this is our little hero! Not bad! Not bad!"

Max's eyes widened.

The Lieutenant seemed to be so happy while shaking him.

After a while, Max was finally freed from his grasp, but he already felt dizzy after being shook around.

Lieutenant Garrick enthusiastically said, his voice almost shouting, "Good job for saving the village from a very dangerous attack of a demon.

It might only be a F-Rank Demon, but its value to Greater Demon is high.

Killing them is tantamount to offending the Greater Demon!"

Max was flabbergasted. He didn't expect that completing the village quest was offending the Greater Demon as a consequence.

Does that mean I'll be targeted by them now?

A chill ran down his spine.

Players might already be targeting me after I offend the Lewis Family, and now… even demons.

Max didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Lieutenant Garrick said, "However, that's why you deserve this reward."

He raised his hand and his storage ring lit up.

He suddenly said, "Go undress."

Max nodded and hurriedly began undressing, causing the D-Rank Warrior behind the Lieutenant to be stupefied.

However, Max only undressed his robe and accessories, even putting down the orb and staff into his inventory.

Out of nowhere, objects that came out from the Lieutenant's storage ring manifested around Max's body.

A staff appeared on his right hand and an orb on his left hand. Instead of a robe, a coat wrapped his body, enhancing his enigmatic aura.

A ring then wrapped around his middle finger, a charm wrapped his wrist, and a relic rested on his chest, while hanging around his neck.

The D-Rank Warrior was envious. After all, Max had a complete set of equipment given by the Lieutenant himself.

However, the reward was not finished yet.

A dark red badge was placed on Max's chest with a set of words inscribed, "Demon Investigator."

Another silver badge was placed below on it—"Greyfen Trusted Protector."

The D-Rank Warrior wasn't quite familiar with the first badge, but he recognized the second badge.

Having that badge provided a lot of benefits.

Discounted village supplies, favor for Instructor and the Lieutenant himself, and loved and trusted by the villagers to the point they wouldn't mind giving up their master bed for Max if he wanted to sleep at their house.

He thought that the badge was a myth, but he didn't expect for it to exist.

If he was Max, he wouldn't leave the village and enjoy the benefits.

Max, on the other hand, was thinking differently. He completely ignored the silver badge and focused on the set of equipment he received and especially the dark red badge.

It was exuding an aura that seemed to have connected to his soul.

[You have gained a local title, Demon Investigator.

Demon Investigator: a title granted to individuals who have uncovered and dealt with low-level demonic influence within a rural settlement. It marks the bearer as someone capable of recognizing the subtle signs of corruption, even if only at its earliest stages.

+5% Damage Against Demon-type Entities

+10% Resistance to Fear-type Status Effects

Demon Trace Detection (Minor Passive): it allows the bearer to sense faint demonic mana within a small radius.]

Max was satisfied by the local title he gained. Furthermore, the more demons he killed, the higher the chance for the title to upgrade.

Even then, Max enjoyed the rewards the most because of the set of equipment he gained.
