Chapter 4 - Expanding " Small world "

The night was quieter than usual.

Not silent—but softer.

A dim study lamp lit up Vijay's desk, casting a warm circle of light over scattered notebooks and a half-open textbook. The rest of the room faded into shadows, untouched and still.

On his phone screen, an online lecture continued.

"…and if you observe the pattern carefully, you'll notice—"

Vijay wasn't writing everything.

Only what mattered.

Short notes. Clean. Direct.

He leaned back slightly, rubbing his eyes for a second before focusing again.

Outside, the distant hum of traffic blended with the occasional bark of a dog. The kind of background noise that became part of the night without anyone noticing.

The lecture ended.

The screen dimmed.

For a moment, Vijay just sat there.

Thinking about nothing in particular.

Then he closed his notebook.

Turned off the lamp.

And lay down.

Sleep didn't take long.

Some time later—

The door opened quietly.

His mother stepped inside, careful not to make noise. She paused near the bed, watching him for a moment.

He had fallen asleep without pulling the blanket properly.

As usual.

She sighed softly.

Adjusted it over him.

Her hand rested gently on his head.

A simple gesture.

Familiar.

Then she leaned down—

and placed a light kiss on his forehead.

"Sleep properly," she whispered, though he couldn't hear it.

She turned off the remaining light—

and left the room.

The night settled again.

Morning came faster than it should have.

"Wake up," Kabir's voice cut through the air.

Vijay opened his eyes slowly.

"…Why are you here?"

Kabir stood near the door, already dressed for school.

"Because you don't answer calls," he said. "And your mother let me in."

From the kitchen, his mother called out—

"I told him to wake you up!"

Kabir grinned.

"You're welcome."

Vijay sat up, running a hand through his hair.

"You're annoying ."

"Efficient," Kabir corrected.

( came to school after being ready )

The classroom felt more alive than usual.

Not louder—

just… active.

"Where are they?" Kabir muttered as he dropped into his seat.

"Who?"

Kabir looked at Vijay like that should've been obvious.

"Dev and Ayaan."

Vijay paused for a second.

Right.

Dev Malhotra

Energy that never ran out.

Loud. Strong. Always moving.

The kind of person who turned even boring days into something chaotic.

Syaan Sheikh

Calm. Focused.

But known for one thing more than anything else—

his cooking.

Narrator :

"Some students are remembered for their marks. Some for their attitude.

Ayaan was remembered because half the class had tasted something he made… and never forgot it."

"He's still on leave?" Vijay asked.

Kabir nodded. "Family issue, I think."

"And Dev?"

"No idea. Probably got into trouble somewhere."

Vijay almost smiled.

That sounded like him.

"Class feels incomplete without them," Kabir added.

"It's quieter."

"Too quiet."

From the other side of the room—

laughter.

Three girls stood near the window, clearly not concerned about lowering their voices.

The trio

Misha — confident, playful, always leading

Rhea— stylish, expressive, easily amused

Kavya — softer, but just as bold when needed

"Did you see the new guy in 12-B?" Misha said.

"Obviously," Rhea replied. "Tall, decent face… acceptable."

"Acceptable?" Kavya laughed. "That's harsh."

Their conversation drifted, light and effortless.

A few boys nearby tried not to look too interested.

Failed.

Kabir leaned slightly toward Vijay.

"They'll target someone new soon."

"Why?"

"For entertainment."

Before Vijay could respond—

someone approached Riya's desk.

"Sana "

She placed her bag down casually, leaning slightly closer to Riya.

"You didn't come yesterday," she said.

Her tone was normal.

Her eyes weren't.

"Something came up," Riya replied simply.

Sana nodded.

Didn't ask further.

But didn't leave immediately either.

Her gaze lingered.

Just for a second longer than necessary.

Then she walked away.

Vijay noticed.

Not the words.

The pause.

"Vijay."

He turned.

Nikhil stood beside his desk.

"You solved yesterday's assignment?" Nikhil asked.

"Yeah."

Nikhil nodded once.

"Good."

There was a brief silence.

Then—

"Do you think you can keep up with them?"

Vijay frowned slightly. "Who?"

Nikhil glanced toward the front rows.

Rohit sharma

Ishann verma

Both known.

Both consistent.

Both always near the top.

Narrator:

In every class, there are always a few names that repeat.

Not because they're extraordinary—

but because they never fall behind.

"They don't make mistakes often," Nikhil said calmly.

Vijay leaned back slightly.

"…I'm not competing."

Nikhil studied him for a second.

"Everyone is," he said.

Then walked away.

Kabir leaned in immediately.

"What was that about?"

"Nothing."

"Did he challenge you?"

"No."

Kabir frowned.

"…Feels like he did."

The class settled again as the teacher entered.

From the corner of his eye—

Vijay noticed movement.

Riya.

She was writing.

Focused.

Normal.

But for a brief moment—

her hand paused.

As if she sensed something.

Then continued.

Like nothing happened.

The day moved forward.

Light conversations. Small moments.

Nothing too serious.

And yet—

Between all of it—

Things were slowly taking shape.

People.

Connections.

Patterns.

Vijay didn't realize it yet—

But his world was getting bigger.

And more complicationed .
