Chapter 1 - PUBLIC HUMILIATION

The golden lights of the restaurant reflected off the polished marble floors, giving everything a warm, luxurious glow.

Daniel hesitated at the entrance.

For a moment, he just stood there, watching.

People walked in and out with confidence, dressed in expensive clothes, laughing freely like they had no worries in the world. Everything about the place screamed money, class, and status.

Things he didn't have.

He looked down at himself.

A simple shirt.

Faded jeans.

Worn-out shoes.

His fingers tightened around the small box in his hand.

Maybe this was a mistake.

Maybe he should just turn around and go home.

But then he saw her.

Amanda.

She sat at the center of the restaurant, surrounded by her friends, laughing like she owned the world. Her beauty was effortless, her confidence unmatched.

She looked perfect.

Daniel swallowed hard.

This was why he came.

Taking a deep breath, he stepped inside.

Each step felt heavy, like the ground itself was trying to push him back. He could feel invisible eyes on him, even if no one was actually looking.

Still, he kept going.

Closer.

Closer.

Until he stood right in front of her table.

"Hey… Amanda."

The laughter stopped.

Her friends turned to look at him.

Amanda slowly turned her head.

For a moment, she looked confused.

Then—

"Oh… Daniel."

Her tone was flat, uninterested.

Like she barely remembered him.

One of her friends smirked.

"Wait… isn't he from your class?"

Another laughed softly.

"Yeah, the quiet one."

Daniel forced a smile.

"I… I wanted to talk to you for a minute."

Amanda glanced at her friends before looking back at him.

"I'm kind of busy."

Her voice was calm, but dismissive.

Daniel hesitated for a second, then tightened his grip on the box.

"I won't take long."

She sighed.

"Fine. Say it."

Her friends leaned in, clearly interested.

To them, this was entertainment.

To Daniel, this was everything.

He swallowed hard.

"I've liked you for a long time," he said. "And I was hoping… maybe you'd give me a chance."

Silence.

Then laughter.

"Wait… are you serious?" one of her friends said.

Amanda didn't laugh immediately.

She just looked at him from head to toe.

Judging him.

Measuring him.

Then she smiled.

Cold.

"Daniel, do you really think this is enough?"

He blinked.

"What?"

She pointed at the box.

"That."

Slowly, he opened it.

A simple necklace reflected the light.

It wasn't expensive.

But it was everything he could afford.

"I got it for you," he said quietly.

Amanda stared at it for a moment.

Then she laughed.

Not softly.

Not kindly.

But openly.

Her friends joined in.

"Wow… he's serious," one of them said.

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"It's not about the price," he said quickly. "I just thought—"

"Let me stop you right there," Amanda interrupted.

Her voice was louder now.

"I would never date a broke guy."

The words hit hard.

The table burst into laughter.

Daniel's hands tightened.

"I'm being honest," she continued. "Look around you."

He didn't want to.

But he did.

Expensive watches.

Designer clothes.

Confident smiles.

Then he looked at himself again.

And for the first time—

He saw what they saw.

Someone who wasn't enough.

"You and I are not on the same level," Amanda said.

Each word felt final.

One of her friends whispered loudly,

"He probably saved for months just to buy that."

More laughter.

Daniel's ears rang.

But he still stood there.

"I really like you," he said again, his voice weaker.

Amanda stared at him.

Then she reached out.

For a moment, he thought she would take the gift.

But instead—

She pushed his hand away.

The box fell.

Hit the ground.

Unopened.

Unwanted.

"Next time," she said calmly, leaning back, "know your place."

Something inside Daniel broke.

Completely.

He bent down slowly and picked up the box.

No one helped him.

No one spoke.

They just watched.

Like he was nothing.

Without saying another word, he turned and walked away.

The laughter followed him.

It echoed in his ears even after he stepped outside.

The cool night air hit his face.

He stopped.

For a moment, he just stood there.

Silent.

Then he laughed.

A low, bitter laugh.

"Broke…"

He looked at the box in his hand and closed it slowly.

"Is that all I am?"

His grip tightened.

His eyes hardened.

"No."

The word came out quietly.

"But not anymore."

He pulled out his phone.

The screen lit up in the dark.

"If money is what defines everything…"

His voice dropped.

"Then I'll get more money than anyone here."

At that moment—

His phone vibrated.

He frowned and looked at the screen.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

"Do you want to change your fate?"

Daniel stared at it.

His heartbeat slowed.

A slow smile formed on his face.

"Let's see…"
