Chapter 3 - The Dairy Dilemma and the Tower

The cows of Gielinor were significantly more relaxed than the chickens. They stood in the sun, chewing cud with a rhythmic, mechanical indifference. I approached a particularly large one, its hide a patchwork of black and white spots.

[Dairy Cow - Level 0]

"Zero," I whispered, feeling a boost in confidence. "Finally, an opponent I can handle."

I had found an empty bucket near the farm shed, and I knelt in the tall grass, trying to remember if I'd ever actually seen a cow milked outside of a cartoon. I reached out, and for a moment, the world felt incredibly still. This was it—the life of an adventurer. One minute you're dodging a multidimensional truck, the next you're attempting to navigate bovine anatomy for a Duke's birthday cake.

"Easy does it, girl," I murmured.

[SYSTEM: MINING LEVEL 1... Wait, checking... Incorrect Skill. Please use your hands.]

The System's sass was starting to become a theme. I adjusted my grip, and after a few awkward splashes and a very judgmental look from the cow, the bucket began to fill.

[SKILL INCREASE: FARMING LEVEL 2]

"I'll take it," I said, wiping a stray drop of milk from my cheek.

The final stop was the windmill. I climbed the creaking wooden stairs, lugging a sack of wheat I'd gathered from the nearby field. The gears groaned, the giant stones grinding together with a sound like rolling thunder. I tipped the grain into the hopper, watched the flour billow out like a white cloud, and caught it in a pot.

[QUEST OBJECTIVES COMPLETE: COOK'S ASSISTANT]

I practically sprinted back to the castle. The Cook took the ingredients with a squeal of delight that was probably a bit much for a sponge cake, but as he handed me a small pile of gold coins and a slice of bread, a massive notification filled my vision.

[QUEST COMPLETE: COOK'S ASSISTANT]

[Reward: 300 Cooking XP, 1 Quest Point, 500 Gold Coins]

[LEVEL UP! COOKING: LEVEL 4]

The rush was addictive. I looked at the gold—real, heavy, clinking gold. I wasn't unemployed anymore. I was a contractor for the crown. Sort of.

I checked my map. The Wizard's Tower sat on a small island to the south, connected by a long stone bridge. As I approached the coast, the air began to change. It grew cooler, smelling of salt and something sharp, like the ozone before a lightning strike.

Elena was there, leaning against the bridge's stone railing. She'd swapped her leather cap for a circlet that shimmered with a faint violet light.

"You look less like a pillow-fight victim," she said as I approached. "And you smell like... flour? Did you actually finish the quest?"

"Level 4 Cook at your service," I said, giving a mock bow. "And I only got kicked once by the cow. I'm basically a veteran now."

Elena chuckled, but her gaze quickly shifted back toward the tower. It was a massive, spiraling structure of dark stone that seemed to pulse with a low, rhythmic light.

"Don't get too cocky, Chef," she said, her voice dropping an octave. "The wizards are in an uproar. Something is leaking out of the basement—spirits or rogue magical energy. The Head Wizard, Sedridor, is offering a bounty for anyone who can help stabilize the rift."

"Is that a Quest?" I asked, my pulse quickening.

"A dangerous one," she replied, looking me over. "Most Level 3s would stay in the pub. But I have a feeling you're not most people, Adam. There's something... different about your energy. You don't move like the others born here."

I felt a pang of guilt. Should I tell her I was hit by a truck and sent here by a cosmic oversight? Probably not the best first-date conversation.

"I'm just a fast learner," I said instead.

"We'll see. The rift is in the lower levels. It's spawning these... things. Small, flickering wisps of shadow. If we take them down, we can collect 'Anima Shards' to plug the leak." She drew a shortsword from her hip. The steel was engraved with runes that glowed blue. "Stay behind me. If you see something purple and screaming, don't try to milk it."

We crossed the bridge, the sound of our boots echoing over the crashing waves below. Inside the tower, the air was thick with the sound of chanting and the frantic scratching of quills on parchment. We descended a spiral staircase into the damp, cold basement.

There, in the center of the room, was a tear in reality. It looked like a jagged hole in a piece of black paper, revealing a swirling vortex of violet mist.

[NEW AREA DISCOVERED: THE WIZARD'S BASEMENT]

[WORLD EVENT: THE VOID LEAK]

"Ready?" Elena asked, her eyes glowing with the reflection of the rift.

"I've survived a truck and a chicken," I said, drawing a bronze sword I'd bought with my quest money. "How hard can a hole in space-time be?"

As I spoke, a shadow detached itself from the rift. It had no face, only a pair of glowing white eyes and long, wispy claws.

[Lesser Voidling - Level 5]

The creature hissed, a sound like tearing silk, and lunged. Elena moved like liquid, her sword parrying the claw with a shower of sparks.

"Adam! Now! Hit it while it's distracted!"

I lunged forward, my heart hammering against my ribs. This was it. My first real fight. I swung the bronze blade, and for the first time, I didn't just feel like a guy playing a game. I felt the weight of the steel, the resistance of the air, and the sheer, terrifying thrill of being alive in a world where I actually mattered.

The sword connected.

[-4 Life Points]

The Voidling shrieked, and a surge of energy flowed up my arm.

[STRENGTH LEVEL UP: LEVEL 2]

"Not bad, Newbie!" Elena shouted over the noise. "Now do it again before it eats your soul!"

I grinned, the adrenaline washing away any lingering doubt. Maybe being hit by that truck was the best career move I ever made.
