Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 — Watching From the Shadows

POV: Daniel

Daniel had learned how to disappear long before he changed his name.

It wasn't just about blending into crowds or wearing different clothes. It was about becoming forgettable. A man people looked at but didn't really see. A shadow that passed through rooms without leaving a trace.

But no matter how good he got at it…

He could never disappear from her.

Evelyn stood across the street, one hand wrapped around Lily's small fingers, the other gripping her bag too tightly. Even from this distance, he could tell she was tired. Not the kind of tired sleep fixes. The kind that sits in your bones and doesn't leave.

His jaw tightened.

She wasn't supposed to look like that.

Not because she was weak Evelyn had never been weak but because life wasn't supposed to break her this way. Not like this. Not because of him.

His gaze shifted to the little girl beside her.

Lily.

The name still felt strange in his head. Too soft. Too innocent for something that had changed everything without him even knowing.

His daughter.

Daniel exhaled slowly, his chest tightening.

She looked like Evelyn at first glance the same dark hair, the same soft features. But the more he looked, the more it hit him like a punch to the gut.

The eyes.

Those were his.

Gray. Sharp. Watching the world like it didn't fully trust it.

His throat went dry.

He had missed everything.

The first cry. The first steps. The first word.

All of it.

Gone.

Because he left.

No.

Because he was forced to leave.

Daniel's fingers curled into a fist at his side.

That difference mattered—but it didn't change what Evelyn believed. It didn't change the way she looked at him now. Like he was a stranger. Like he didn't deserve answers.

Like he didn't deserve her.

He swallowed hard, forcing the thought down.

This wasn't about him.

It was about Lily.

The hospital doors slid open, and Evelyn stepped inside, her posture stiff, controlled. Like she was holding herself together by force.

Daniel waited a few seconds before following.

Inside, everything smelled like disinfectant and quiet fear. Nurses moved quickly. Machines beeped in steady rhythms. Conversations were hushed, careful.

He kept his distance.

Always just far enough that she wouldn't notice.

Always close enough that if something went wrong… he'd be there.

Evelyn approached the front desk, speaking to the receptionist. Her voice was calm, but Daniel could see the tension in her shoulders. The way her fingers tapped lightly against the counter.

Impatient.

Worried.

Trying not to show it.

Lily leaned against her side, unusually quiet.

That alone made something twist in his chest.

Kids weren't supposed to be this still.

He shifted his position slightly, pretending to check his phone while keeping her in his peripheral vision.

That was when he saw her.

Bella.

She stood near the hallway, half-hidden behind a pillar, watching Evelyn.

Daniel's expression darkened instantly.

So it wasn't a coincidence.

It never was with Bella.

Her face held that same calm expression she always wore in public soft, concerned, harmless.

But Daniel knew better.

He knew what she was capable of.

He had seen it before.

Too late.

His jaw clenched.

What are you doing here?

Bella glanced around, then stepped forward, approaching a nurse. She leaned in slightly, speaking in a low voice.

Daniel moved closer without drawing attention.

"…appointment?" the nurse asked quietly.

Bella smiled. "Yes. For Evelyn Carter. There's been a change."

Daniel's stomach dropped.

The nurse frowned. "I wasn't informed"

"It came directly from the doctor," Bella said smoothly. "Emergency rescheduling."

The nurse hesitated, then nodded slowly, turning to her computer.

Daniel's pulse spiked.

No.

No, no, no.

He took a step forward

but stopped.

If he interfered now, he'd expose himself.

And he wasn't ready.

Not yet.

Not like this.

He forced himself to stay still, every muscle in his body screaming at him to move.

To stop her.

To protect Evelyn.

But if he showed up now, if he broke cover…

Everything would fall apart.

And he couldn't risk that.

Not when bigger things were at play.

Not when the people he was hiding from were still watching.

A few minutes later, Evelyn approached the desk again.

The nurse gave her a polite smile.

"I'm sorry, ma'am. Your appointment has been rescheduled."

Evelyn blinked. "Rescheduled? I didn't"

"It was updated this morning."

"That's not possible," Evelyn said, her voice tightening. "I confirmed it yesterday."

The nurse looked uncomfortable. "I understand, but"

Evelyn exhaled sharply, dragging a hand through her hair.

"Fine," she muttered. "When is the next available slot?"

Daniel watched her closely.

Frustration.

Exhaustion.

And underneath it… something breaking.

Bella stood a few feet away, pretending to scroll through her phone.

But Daniel saw the slight curve of her lips.

Satisfied.

His blood ran cold.

You're pushing her.

Why?

What's the endgame?

Daniel's gaze hardened.

Bella wasn't acting alone.

She never did.

That meant one thing.

Someone else was pulling the strings.

Someone bigger.

Someone dangerous.

And if Bella was already this bold…

Then things were moving faster than he expected.

Evelyn took Lily's hand again, turning away from the desk.

"I'm sorry, baby," she said softly. "We'll come back another day, okay?"

Lily nodded, but she didn't smile.

Daniel's chest tightened again.

He couldn't do this.

He couldn't keep standing back while Evelyn struggled.

While Lily got worse.

While Bella played her games.

He had promised himself he'd stay hidden.

That he'd approach carefully.

That he wouldn't risk everything by rushing in.

But watching this…

Watching them…

It was breaking something in him.

Evelyn and Lily stepped outside.

Daniel followed at a distance.

The air felt heavier now. Thicker.

Like something was off.

His instincts sharpened instantly.

That familiar, dangerous feeling crept up his spine.

He scanned the area.

Cars parked along the street.

People walking past.

Nothing obvious.

But something wasn't right.

He felt it.

Evelyn paused near her car, digging into her bag for her keys.

Lily stood close to her side, quiet.

Too quiet.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

There.

Across the street.

A man leaning against a pole.

Watching.

Not casually.

Not accidentally.

Watching her.

Daniel's body went still.

Every instinct locked in.

The man didn't look away when Daniel's gaze landed on him.

If anything… he smirked.

A slow, knowing smile.

Daniel's stomach dropped.

That wasn't random.

That was intentional.

Evelyn unlocked the car.

Opened the door.

Lifted Lily inside.

The man pushed off the pole.

Started walking.

Toward them.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Daniel moved before he could think.

By the time Evelyn closed the door and turned

Daniel was already there.

Right behind her.

Close enough to feel the warmth of her body.

Close enough to hear her sharp intake of breath.

"Get in the car," he said quietly.

Evelyn froze.

That voice.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

She turned slowly

And for a second…

Everything stopped.

Their eyes met.

Gray.

Blue.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

Her breath caught.

"…you," she whispered.

Daniel didn't answer.

He didn't have time.

"Get in the car," he repeated, firmer this time.

Her confusion snapped into anger instantly.

"What are you doing her "

"Now, Evelyn."

Something in his tone made her pause.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Authority.

The kind she remembered.

The kind she hated herself for still responding to.

Her jaw tightened.

But she got in the car.

Daniel turned.

The man had stopped a few feet away.

Still watching.

Still smiling.

Daniel stepped forward, placing himself between him and the car.

A silent warning.

The man tilted his head slightly.

Amused.

Then, without a word…

He turned and walked away.

Just like that.

Like he had gotten what he came for.

Daniel stood there for a second longer, his heart still pounding.

That wasn't over.

Not even close.

Behind him, the car door opened again.

Evelyn stepped out.

Anger radiating off her.

"What the hell is going on?" she demanded.

Daniel turned slowly.

Their eyes locked again.

Too much history.

Too much pain.

Too much left unsaid.

"I'm trying to keep you safe," he said.

Her laugh was sharp. Bitter.

"Safe?" she snapped. "From what? You?"

That hit harder than anything else.

But he didn't show it.

"You're being watched," he said instead.

"I know that," she shot back. "You've made that very clear."

He stepped closer.

Lowered his voice.

"Not me."

That made her pause.

Just for a second.

"…then who?" she asked, quieter now.

Daniel held her gaze.

And for the first time…

He didn't have an answer he could give her.

Behind them, unseen

A car engine started.

Watching.

Waiting.

And whatever had just begun…

Was far from over.

Daniel realizes Evelyn isn't just being manipulated anymore she's being hunted.
