Chapter 2 - Episode 2: Shadow's Grasp

Rain fell hard on Tokyo's damaged streets. It soaked everything. Kairos Voss stepped out from the dark tunnels. His shoulder hurt a lot. He had put med-gel on the wound, but it still stung. Back in the tunnel, Rhea's team was cheering. They had beaten the giant Echo monster called the Rift Sovereign. Kairos took its special core-shard. It felt heavy in his pocket. But something scared him more. His own shadow had come alive. It looked at him and smiled. In his mind, it said, "The awakening begins." Those words would not leave his head.

Kairos walked into a quiet alley. Neon lights flashed blue on his face. His silver eyes checked around for danger. Far away, sirens were crying. The city was trying to fix itself after the big fight. He touched his wrist-comm to call Rhea.

Nothing happened. Just static noise.

"Damn Echoes," Kairos said to himself. "They're jamming everything."

He sat down against a wet wall. He needed a break. His neck tattoo—the broken clock—felt very hot. The hands on it moved backward super fast.

"This is bad," he thought. "Something inside me is waking up."

He heard steps splashing in puddles. Rhea came out of the fog. Her metal arms shined wet. Her wolf pet walked beside her. It smelled Kairos' blood and growled a little.

"You okay, kid?" Rhea asked. She pointed her scanner at his shoulder. "That wound looks rough. Sovereign's gone, but smaller Echoes are popping up everywhere. My team's watching the streets."

Kairos hid the shard better in his coat. "I felt that monster inside my head," he said. "It wanted to control me."

Rhea's scanner light got weaker. She looked nervous. "Listen, Kairos. Genesis Echoes are special. They choose their host. Yours picked you when you were a boy. You locked it away, but seals break."

She touched his tattoo. "This clock? It's the progenitor mark. Means you're the first. Companies like Nexus Prime would do anything to study you."

"What?" Kairos said. "You never told me that before."

"Too dangerous," Rhea replied. "But now... it's out."

Before he could ask more, the ground shook hard. A loud crack sound came from above. A new rift opened in the sky. It was purple with lightning flashes. Ugly Echoes fell out. They looked like office workers with long snake-ties.

"More trouble," Kairos said. He pulled out his blade.

"Let's clean 'em up," Rhea said. Her wolf ran first and bit one's neck.

Kairos made black webs from his hand. Time slowed down. The Echoes froze. They started talking about their sad pasts.

"I lied to get my job!" one said.

"I hurt my family!" another cried.

Kairos broke them fast. Shards dropped into his bag. One grabbed his leg. It sounded like his dead sister.

"Brother, you left me," it whispered.

"Shut up!" Kairos yelled. He kicked it hard.

Rhea shot the last one with her arm gun. Boom! "Your power's getting wild, Kairos. You need to control it."

"Good advice," Kairos said. "Let's get to the bar."

They walked through scary streets. People hid with their kids. Some Echoes attacked cars. Kairos saw a group coming. He stopped time again. Flowers grew from blood on the ground. The sharp petals cut the Echoes to pieces.

Rhea stared. "Whoa. Companies are making these rifts on purpose. They want the strong Echoes to win."

They got to the bar. The door was open. Inside was terrible. Two team members were dead on the floor. Walls had big claw marks.

"Ambush!" Rhea shouted. "Who did this?"

Kairos felt cold. Then his shadow moved. It came off the floor. Now it was a real person. Tall cloak, gold eyes.

"Progenitor," it said. "Join me now."

The team shot guns at it. Bullets went right through.

"What the hell?" one crew guy said.

Kairos held his blade tight. "That's... my Echo?"

The shadow waved its hand. Tables flew up. Air got sticky and slow.

Rhea's wolf jumped at it. Black lines hit the wolf. It saw Rhea's old pain—her dead friends screaming.

"No!" Rhea yelled. She aimed her cannon. "Kairos, fight it!"

"I have to break the connection!" Kairos said. He ran forward.

His blade hit the shadow. It hurt Kairos too, like cutting his own skin. The shadow laughed.

"You can't save everyone," it said. Kairos' voice, but deep. "Like your sister."

Lira's face appeared. She looked sad. Kairos swung his blade many times. Time made a loop. The shadow got old and fell apart again and again.

But it came back bigger. It grabbed Kairos' wrist. Power rushed in. Kairos saw pictures in his head. When he was born, the first rift opened. He started it all.

"No!" Kairos shouted. He pushed the power out. Black smoke came from his mouth. The bar broke more. The shadow faded.

"Soon," it said quietly.

Kairos fell to the floor. He breathed fast. Rhea ran to him. Her wolf was hurt but walked over.

"I told you it was bad," Rhea said. She showed her map. Red lights blinked everywhere.

"Look," she said. "Nexus Prime tower is glowing. That's their test spot for Eclipse Protocol. We need to go there."

"Why?" Kairos asked.

"For answers," Rhea said. "About you."

The team looked at Kairos. Some were scared. Some were impressed.

"It's decided," one said. "We raid the tower."

Rain got stronger outside. A giant new rift opened in the sky. Long tentacles came down.

"No time to wait," Kairos said. He stood up. His tattoo beat like a drum. The shadow was coming back. He knew it.

The team grabbed their weapons. They walked out into the rain. Kairos led the way. His heart raced. Tokyo was falling apart. And so was he.
