Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Glass Tower

The 50th-floor lobby of Pearson Hardman was a cathedral of ego and expensive marble. Usually, the air was filled with the frantic hum of paralegals, but as the elevator doors slid open, a sudden, heavy silence followed the man who stepped out.

Chris D. Mikaelson.

He stood 6'3", his physique filling out a midnight-blue Tom Ford suit that looked like it had been molded to his frame. His hair was perfectly styled, his jawline sharp enough to cut glass, and his eyes—cold, obsidian, and utterly bored—scanned the room like he was looking at a chessboard he'd already won.

A translucent blue screen flickered in his vision, invisible to everyone else.

Chris didn't stop at the reception desk. He didn't ask for directions. He walked straight toward the heartbeat of the firm: the executive offices.

"Excuse me! Sir? You can't just go back there!" a junior associate stammered, stepping into his path.

Chris didn't even break his stride. He looked at the associate for exactly one second.

[Action: Cold Stare]

The associate froze, his mouth hanging open as a chill ran down his spine. He stepped aside without another word, his instinct telling him that getting in this man's way was a career-ending mistake.

Chris reached the desk outside the corner office. Donna Paulsen was mid-sentence on a call, her fingers flying across her keyboard. She looked up, expecting a frantic intern.

Instead, she saw him.

For the first time in three years, Donna Paulsen's brain hit a momentary glitch. She didn't know this man. She knew everyone. She knew the name of every janitor, every CEO in the Fortune 500, and every mailroom boy. But this man was a blank space in her mental filing cabinet.

And he was the most striking man she had ever seen.

"Can I help you?" Donna asked, her voice regaining its professional edge, though her eyes were narrowed, scanning him for a weakness—a wedding ring, a cheap watch, a nervous twitch.

She found nothing.

"I'm here for the 9:00 AM," Chris said. His voice was a deep, resonant growl that seemed to vibrate in the air.

"Mr. Specter doesn't have a 9:00 AM," Donna replied, leaning back, her red hair catching the morning light. "And I would know."

"I'm not here for Harvey," Chris said. He leaned down, placing one hand on her desk, invading her personal space just enough to be felt. The System pinged.

"I'm here for Jessica," Chris finished, his eyes locked onto hers.

"Jessica doesn't take—"

"Donna, let him in."

The voice came from the office door. Jessica Pearson stood there, a rare, triumphant smirk on her face. She looked at Chris with the eyes of someone who had just bought a nuclear weapon and couldn't wait to test it.

"Everyone," Jessica announced, her voice carrying across the entire bullpen, drawing the eyes of Harvey, Louis, and fifty associates. "Meet Chris D. Mikaelson. As of five minutes ago, he is the newest Junior Partner at Pearson Hardman."

The bullpen erupted into a frantic whisper. Junior Partner? From where? Who is he?

Chris didn't look back at the crowd. He looked at Donna. He leaned in just a fraction closer, his gaze dropping to her lips for a heartbeat before meeting her eyes again.

"Get used to the face, Donna," he said softly, a ghost of a smirk finally appearing. "You'll be seeing a lot of it."

He walked into Jessica's office without waiting for a response.

Donna sat frozen for a second, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked down at her computer, her fingers hovering over the keys.

"Who the hell are you, Chris Mikaelson?" she whispered to herself.
