Chapter 9 - What Remains After

The silence after the chaos was worse than the chaos itself.

Greenwood was still standing.

But not untouched.

There was something in the air.

Something that couldn't be seen… but could be felt.

As if the city had been marked.

And in a way…

it had.

"This isn't over."

Daniel was the first to say it.

The group was gathered in Max's apartment.

For the first time… all in the same place.

And no one looked comfortable with that.

"No, it's not over," Max replied, leaning against the wall, eyes fixed on something distant. "This is just the beginning."

Rick stood by the window, arms crossed, watching the street.

Always alert.

Always ready.

Elena was on the other side of the room.

Distant.

Like she didn't belong there.

Like… she didn't belong anywhere.

Celine watched everything in silence.

And that said a lot.

"So what's the plan?" Daniel asked.

Silence.

Because no one had a ready answer.

"We find him," Rick said at last.

Simple.

Direct.

As always.

"It's not that easy," Elena replied.

Rick turned toward her.

"It never is."

"You don't understand," she shot back, crossing her arms. "He's not like the others."

"And you are?"

Silence.

Tense.

Celine stepped in before it escalated.

"Enough."

Everyone looked at her.

"This isn't about who's more dangerous."

Her gaze moved across all of them.

"It's about surviving what's coming."

Max finally stepped away from the wall.

"She's right."

Rick looked away.

But didn't argue.

Elena stayed silent too.

But this time…

it wasn't resistance.

It was… acceptance.

Hours later.

The tension was still there.

But different now.

Less confrontation.

More… adaptation.

They weren't a team yet.

But they weren't strangers anymore.

"Were you always like this?" Daniel asked Rick, leaning in the kitchen.

"Like what?"

"Ready to attack anything that moves."

Rick gave a faint smile.

"Only the ones that deserve it."

Daniel nodded.

"Fair enough."

On the other side of the room…

Elena stood alone.

As always.

But this time…

not entirely by choice.

Rick watched her.

From a distance.

Trying not to watch.

And failing completely.

He ran a hand over his face.

"This is ridiculous…" he muttered.

But still…

he walked over.

"You gonna stand there all night?"

Elena didn't turn.

"Maybe."

"Looks comfortable."

"It is."

Silence.

Awkward.

"You fight well," he said.

She turned slowly.

Eyes fixed on him.

"I do what's necessary."

"I noticed."

Another silence.

"You're not bad either," she said.

Rick raised an eyebrow.

"Was that a compliment?"

"Don't get used to it."

He let out a quiet laugh.

And then—

They stood there.

Not knowing what to say.

And that was new.

For both of them.

"You could've died," he said suddenly.

Elena paused.

"For a second."

"So could you."

"That's not the same."

"Isn't it?"

She stepped closer.

Now near.

"You think I need saving?"

Rick held her gaze.

"I think you didn't need to be trapped like that."

Silence.

But this time…

different.

Less tension.

More… something undefined.

"Thank you," she said finally.

Soft.

Almost imperceptible.

Rick didn't answer.

But he didn't look away either.

And that was something.

"That's gonna be a problem."

Daniel spoke quietly, watching them.

Celine stood beside him.

"It already is," she replied.

But there was a faint smile at the corner of her lips.

And that…

was rare.

Max watched everything.

In silence.

But not detached.

He saw it.

The connections forming.

The tension easing.

The need bringing them together.

But inside him…

something was still wrong.

The vision.

The voice.

It hadn't gone away.

"You're far away," Celine said, stepping closer.

Max didn't answer immediately.

"I saw something."

She focused.

"What?"

He hesitated.

Then said:

"The city… destroyed."

Silence.

"Not metaphorically.

Real."

Her eyes shifted.

"That's not good."

"I know."

"He showed you that?"

"No."

Max looked straight at her.

"I saw it."

And that…

was worse.

"So we've got a bigger problem than we thought," Daniel said, turning back to the group.

"We always did," Elena replied.

Rick crossed his arms.

"Then stop talking and start acting."

"And do what?" Celine asked.

Silence.

Max took a breath.

Then said:

"We stop him."

Simple.

Direct.

But heavy.

"And how do you plan to do that?" Elena asked.

Max looked at all of them.

One by one.

"Together."

Silence.

Because that word…

wasn't simple.

Not for them.

"I don't work in teams," Rick said.

"Neither do I," Elena added.

"Neither do I," Max said.

They all looked at him.

"But it doesn't matter anymore."

A pause.

"Because alone…"

he exhaled slowly,

"none of us survives this."

The silence that followed…

was different.

Not tense.

Not heavy.

But… decisive.

Later.

They were still there.

But something had changed.

They weren't allies.

Not yet.

But they weren't strangers either.

And sometimes…

that's how it begins.

Rick stepped into the hallway.

He needed air.

Or something close to it.

But he wasn't alone for long.

"Running away?"

Elena's voice came from behind.

He didn't turn.

"Just thinking."

"Dangerous."

"I'll take the risk."

She stepped closer.

Standing beside him.

"You don't like this," she said.

"Like what?"

"Needing other people."

Rick let out a quiet laugh.

"Do you?"

"No."

Silence.

But comfortable this time.

"Then why are you here?" he asked.

She looked ahead.

"For the same reason you are."

A pause.

"This needs to end."

Rick nodded.

"And it will."

She turned her head slightly.

Watching him.

"You sound very sure."

"I've got reasons."

Silence.

And then—

"You still don't understand," she said.

Rick frowned.

"What?"

Elena took a small step back.

But before leaving…

she said:

"This isn't just a fight."

Rick stayed there.

Still.

Thinking.

And for the first time…

it wasn't just about the enemy.

It was about everything that came with it.

Inside the apartment…

Max was still awake.

Staring at the board.

More connections.

More questions.

More pieces.

And then—

The voice.

Lower.

Closer.

"They're not ready…"

Max closed his eyes.

"Neither am I."

Silence.

Then—

"That doesn't matter."

He opened his eyes.

Heart racing.

"Why?"

The answer came…

like a final whisper.

"Because it's already begun."
