The Journey Home

The silence that followed felt… unreal.

Moments ago, the city had been alive with energy—shaking, glowing, roaring with power.

Now—

Nothing.

The light had faded. The air was still. Even the faint hum that once filled the space had disappeared.

Aarav stood at the center of the platform, breathing heavily, the map still clutched in his hand.

"It's over…" Rohan said softly, almost like he didn't believe it.

Meera lowered her bow slowly, her eyes scanning the surroundings one last time.

"No," she said quietly. "Not yet."

Aarav looked around.

That's when he noticed it.

The edges of the city—far in the distance—were beginning to blur.

At first, it was subtle.

A shimmer in the air.

Like heat rising from the ground.

Then—

The buildings themselves began to fade.

"…What's happening?" Aarav asked.

Meera's expression turned serious.

"The Realm," she said. "It's closing."

Rohan blinked. "Closing? As in… disappearing?!"

A low rumble echoed beneath their feet—not violent this time, but final.

Aarav looked back at the platform.

At the place where the energy had been sealed.

"It's going back into hiding," he said.

"Like it was before," Meera added.

Rohan looked around nervously. "Okay, then maybe we should not be here when it fully disappears?"

"Agreed," Meera said.

They moved quickly through the fading city.

The glowing crystals dimmed one by one as they passed. The once-bright streets now felt like shadows of what they had been.

Aarav slowed slightly, glancing around.

"This place…" he said quietly. "It was incredible."

"And dangerous," Meera reminded him.

"Yeah," Rohan added. "Very dangerous. Let's admire it from a safe distance next time."

Aarav gave a small smile.

But inside—

He felt something else.

Respect.

For the power.

For the people who had tried to protect it.

For the choice they had made.

As they reached the outer edge of the city, the massive gate came into view again.

Still open.

Still waiting.

But not for long.

"Move!" Meera urged.

The ground behind them began to fade completely now—pieces of the city dissolving into light.

Rohan ran ahead. "I am not getting erased today!"

Aarav followed, but just before stepping through—

He stopped.

Meera noticed immediately. "Aarav, what are you doing?"

He turned back.

At the city.

At everything they had just experienced.

For a moment—

He just looked.

Then he nodded to himself.

"…Thank you," he whispered.

Not to anyone specific.

But to the journey.

The lesson.

The Realm.

Then he turned—

And stepped through the gate.

The moment all three crossed—

The gate slammed shut behind them.

A deep echo rang out.

And the forest returned.

Dark.

Silent.

But no longer threatening.

Rohan leaned against a tree, catching his breath. "Okay… I officially never want to see that place again."

Meera smirked slightly. "You will."

Rohan groaned. "I knew you were going to say that."

Aarav looked down at the map.

The glowing path—

Was gone.

The parchment was still there.

But now it looked like an ordinary, faded scroll.

"It's finished," he said.

Meera nodded. "For now."

The journey back felt… different.

The same paths.

The same terrain.

But everything felt lighter.

Easier.

They talked more.

Laughed more.

Even the silence felt comfortable.

At one point, Rohan pulled out a small device again.

"Don't worry," he said quickly as Meera gave him a look. "This one won't explode."

"…You said that last time," she replied.

"Okay, but statistically—"

It exploded.

Aarav burst out laughing.

Meera shook her head, but she was smiling.

And for the first time—

It felt like they weren't just surviving the journey.

They were enjoying it.

Days later—

The familiar fields of Elden Hollow came into view.

Aarav slowed to a stop.

Home.

It looked exactly the same.

Peaceful.

Unchanged.

But he wasn't.

"You good?" Rohan asked.

Aarav nodded slowly.

"Yeah," he said.

Meera crossed her arms. "You don't have to stay, you know."

Aarav looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"You've seen what's out there," she said. "You don't belong in one place anymore."

Rohan grinned. "Yeah, you're officially one of us now."

Aarav smiled slightly.

"Maybe," he said.

He took a step forward.

Then another.

"I just need to do one thing first."

As he walked into the village, everything felt familiar—but different at the same time.

People greeted him.

Some surprised.

Some curious.

But none of them knew.

None of them understood what he had been through.

And that was okay.

He reached the workshop.

The door was open.

Dev stood inside, working—just like always.

For a moment, Aarav hesitated.

Then—

He stepped in.

"I'm back."

Dev froze.

Slowly, he turned.

For a second, he just stared.

Then he walked forward.

Not fast.

Not dramatic.

Just… steady.

"You left," Dev said.

"I did."

There was a pause.

Then Aarav added—

"But I came back."

Dev studied him carefully.

"You're different."

Aarav nodded.

"I know."

Another silence.

Then—

Dev placed a hand on his shoulder.

Not angry.

Not disappointed.

Just… proud.

"You found what you were looking for?"

Aarav thought for a moment.

Then smiled.

"Yeah," he said.

"I think I did."

Outside, Meera and Rohan waited.

Rohan looked around. "Nice place. Very… peaceful."

Meera nodded. "Too peaceful."

Aarav stepped out, closing the door behind him.

Rohan grinned. "So… what now?"

Aarav looked at them.

Then at the horizon.

The world didn't feel small anymore.

It felt full of possibilities.

"…Now?" he said.

A small smile formed.

"Now we don't stop."
