Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 — Ripples in the West Wing

Marvin moved carefully down the corridor, the crystal casting a steady glow across the polished stone walls. The shadows of the West Wing lingered in the corners, but none dared approach now. For the first time since entering the rift, the corridor felt… almost calm.

He paused near a faintly carved doorway. The symbols etched into the arch glimmered softly, reacting to the crystal's light. Marvin crouched to examine them. "Huh… these weren't here before," he muttered. The patterns shifted beneath his fingertips, subtle spirals that seemed to respond to his presence.

A soft scuffing noise drew his attention. Marvin turned, raising the crystal instinctively. A wisp of faint light hovered at the far end of the hall, moving toward him in delicate arcs. Not threatening—curious.

"…Alright," Marvin whispered. "Guess you're inspecting me too."

The wisp circled his feet, brushing against his ankles with barely-there energy pulses. He knelt slightly, letting his fingers hover over it. The sensation was subtle, like the brush of a breeze, yet it hummed with purpose. Marvin exhaled. "…Okay… you're not dangerous."

He straightened and took a cautious step forward. The corridor ahead curved gently, revealing a small chamber he hadn't noticed before. Its doorway was narrower, the floor patterned with more of the shifting runes. A faint glow emanated from cracks along the walls, soft and irregular.

Marvin entered slowly, letting the crystal illuminate the space. The chamber was empty—except for a small pool of water at the center. It was perfectly still, reflecting the ceiling above like a mirror. Yet the reflection was… odd. Shapes moved across the surface that weren't in the room: faint outlines of corridors, shadows, and glimpses of Marvin's own past movements in the Guest House.

He knelt beside the pool. "…That's new."

As he leaned closer, the reflection rippled. Marvin caught a glimpse of the humanoid shadow from before, flickering just beneath the water's surface. Not real, not fully—but a hint. A warning. The ripple spread, then disappeared, leaving the pool smooth again.

A soft creak sounded behind him. Marvin whirled, crystal raised. The doorway he had entered through was empty, the corridor still quiet. "…Good… good, keep quiet for now," he muttered.

He straightened and studied the pool again. The faint light in the walls shimmered slightly, as if responding to the ripples. Marvin realized that every step he took, every thought, every movement of the crystal, was being reflected here—not literally, but in influence. The chamber was a quiet sensor of the West Wing, a small test of perception.

Marvin exhaled slowly, letting tension ease from his shoulders. "…Alright… one thing at a time." He tapped the water gently with his fingertip. The ripple moved outward, washing across the pool in expanding circles. The shapes within the water shifted, forming patterns that reminded him of the runes outside.

He straightened, brushing his sleeves. "Okay… no panicking. That's just a chamber. A strange, weird chamber, but manageable."

From behind, the soft scuff of footsteps returned. Marvin glanced back to see the wisp hovering near the doorway, its light dimming slightly, almost contemplative. He smiled faintly. "…Yeah… I get it. You're studying too."

He rose fully, adjusting the crystal in his hand. The pool remained calm now, the reflection perfectly still. Marvin took a deep breath, feeling the steady pulse of the Guest House beneath him. No rift, no tendrils, no immediate danger. Just observation, and a test of patience.

Marvin exhaled again, letting the quiet settle over him. He glanced once more at the water, noting every shimmer and shadow. "…Alright. Let's see where this leads."

He stepped toward the next corridor, careful and deliberate, leaving the pool and the wisp behind. The West Wing was quiet again, the hum of the house steady beneath his feet. And for the first time, Marvin felt… measured, ready to move forward without rushing, without forcing the next moment.

The chapter ended in silence, broken only by the soft pulse of energy in the stone beneath him.
