Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The New Intern

The glass doors of Jǐngchéng Tech Tower slid open with a soft pneumatic hiss, admitting a rush of cool morning air laced with the faint scent of rain from last night's storm. Lin Yuè stepped inside, clutching his slim portfolio bag a little too tightly against his chest. His oversized pastel blue sweater hung loosely on his slender frame, the sleeves slipping past his knuckles as he adjusted the strap of his backpack. Messy black hair fell into his eyes—soft, slightly wavy at the ends—and he quickly brushed it back with a shy flick of his fingers.

He looked exactly like what the HR email had requested: fresh graduate, unassuming, eager. Harmless.

The lobby was a cathedral of modern luxury—polished white marble floors reflecting the massive digital wall displaying cascading lines of green code and holographic company logos. Employees moved with purpose: sharp suits, earpieces, tablets glowing in their hands. Lin Yuè kept his gaze lowered, steps small and careful, as if afraid of taking up too much space.

At the reception desk, a woman in a crisp blazer glanced up and smiled politely.

"Lin Yuè? For the junior programmer internship?"

He nodded quickly, voice soft and a little breathless. "Yes... that's me. I'm sorry if I'm a bit early."

"No problem at all. Take the elevator to the 42nd floor. Director Guàn's assistant will meet you there."

Lin Yuè's heart gave a tiny, involuntary thud at the name. *Guàn Jǐngchén*. The man whose company he had once—years ago, as a reckless seventeen-year-old—nearly brought to its knees with a single, elegant breach. Not out of malice. Survival money. A client on the dark web had paid enough to cover his mother's hospital bills for six months. He'd left a polite digital note instead of full destruction: *Your firewall has a cute little gap. Fix it before someone less nice notices. —Eclipse*

He'd never been caught. Never shown his face. Never used that alias again in the same circles.

Until today.

The elevator ride was silent except for the soft chime of floors passing. When the doors opened on 42, a tall woman in a sleek ponytail was waiting.

"Lin Yuè? I'm Assistant Chen. Follow me. CEO Guàn wants to personally welcome the new security team addition."

Lin Yuè blinked, big doe eyes widening just a fraction. "The... CEO? Personally?"

Assistant Chen gave a small, knowing smile. "He's very hands-on with talent that comes recommended so highly. Your test scores were exceptional."

Lin Yuè ducked his head, cheeks flushing pink. "I just... got lucky with the coding problems."

They walked down a corridor lined with frosted glass offices. Through one panel, Lin Yuè caught a glimpse of servers humming behind reinforced doors—his domain, if he played this right. But he kept his expression soft, innocent, fingers twisting nervously in his sweater sleeves.

Assistant Chen knocked once on the double doors at the end of the hall before pushing them open.

"CEO Guàn, the new intern is here."

The office was vast—floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lahore's glittering skyline (no, wait—Shanghai's, in this fictional world; towering skyscrapers piercing morning mist). A massive curved desk dominated the center, screens displaying real-time threat maps, stock tickers, encrypted data streams.

And behind the desk stood Guàn Jǐngchén.

He was taller than the photos suggested—broad shoulders filling out a perfectly tailored black suit, tie a deep midnight blue against crisp white shirt. Dark hair swept back, sharp jawline, eyes like polished obsidian. Thirty years old, but carrying the weight of someone who'd built an empire from nothing. Ruthless in boardrooms, untouchable in headlines.

Those eyes lifted from the tablet in his hand and landed on Lin Yuè.

For a split second, the room felt smaller.

Lin Yuè froze mid-step, then quickly bowed his head, voice barely above a whisper. "G-Good morning, CEO Guàn. Thank you for... for giving me this opportunity. I'll work very hard."

Guàn Jǐngchén set the tablet down slowly. His gaze swept over the boy in front of him—loose sweater swallowing narrow shoulders, cheeks still faintly pink, fingers fidgeting like he might bolt if spoken to too loudly.

Something flickered in those dark eyes. Curiosity? Amusement? Something sharper.

"Lin Yuè," he said, voice low and measured, carrying the effortless authority of someone used to being obeyed. "Your penetration test results were... impressive. You found vulnerabilities even my senior team missed."

Lin Yuè's lashes fluttered. He laughed softly, self-deprecating. "I was just following the guidelines. Nothing special."

Guàn Jǐngchén stepped around the desk, closing the distance. Assistant Chen quietly excused herself, doors clicking shut behind her.

The CEO stopped a respectful meter away, but the air between them felt charged. He tilted his head slightly, studying Lin Yuè like a puzzle he hadn't expected to enjoy solving.

"You don't look like someone who spends nights breaking into fortified systems."

Lin Yuè's eyes widened, then he ducked his head again, ears turning red. "I... I don't really. I mean, I code during the day, study at night. Normal stuff."

A faint curve touched Guàn Jǐngchén's lips—not quite a smile, more like the edge of one. "Normal."

He gestured to the chair opposite the desk. "Sit. We'll discuss your role."

Lin Yuè obeyed instantly, perching on the edge like he might need to flee. Guàn Jǐngchén returned to his seat, leaning back, fingers steepled.

"You'll report directly to me for the first month. Personal cybersecurity projects. Late nights possible. Are you comfortable with that?"

Lin Yuè nodded quickly. "Yes, sir. Whatever you need."

Guàn Jǐngchén's gaze lingered on the boy's face a second too long—on the soft curve of his lips, the way his lashes cast shadows on pale cheeks.

"Good," he said quietly. "Because I don't tolerate half-measures. And I expect complete honesty."

Lin Yuè swallowed, smile small and sweet. "Of course, CEO Guàn. You can count on me."

As Guàn Jǐngchén turned to pull up a file on his screen, Lin Yuè's fingers—hidden in his sleeves—curled slightly.

In his mind, lines of old code flickered like ghosts.

*Fix your gap, handsome. Before someone less nice notices.*

He kept his expression perfectly innocent.

But deep inside, Eclipse smiled.
