Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW BEYOND THE HORIZON

The Shadow Beyond the Horizon

The sea had always called to Rayan.

Ever since he was a child, standing barefoot on the shore, he felt it—a pull stronger than fear, stronger than reason. The villagers warned him never to sail beyond the black horizon, where the water turned unnaturally dark and storms appeared without clouds.

"Ships don't return from there," they said.

Rayan never believed them.

Until the day a broken boat drifted back.

It arrived at dawn, silent and empty, its wood splintered as though something enormous had crushed it. Strange markings covered its sides—symbols no one could understand.

But Rayan noticed something others didn't.

A name, carved deep into the mast.

His brother's name.

Aman had disappeared three years ago, chasing the same horizon. Everyone believed he was dead.

Everyone except Rayan.

That night, while the village slept, Rayan made his choice. He gathered supplies, repaired the smallest fishing boat, and set sail toward the forbidden waters.

At first, the journey was calm. The ocean shimmered under moonlight, peaceful and endless.

Then the stars began to vanish.

One by one, they blinked out, swallowed by a creeping darkness that spread across the sky. The air grew colder. The water beneath his boat turned thick and black, reflecting nothing.

Rayan gripped the edge of the boat.

He had crossed the horizon.

And something beneath the surface had noticed.

A low rumble vibrated through the water.

Then came the whisper.

Not from the wind.

Not from the sea.

From inside his head.

"Turn back."

Rayan froze. His breath quickened, but his hands tightened on the oars.

"No," he said aloud, his voice trembling. "Not without him."

The whisper faded.

But the water began to move.

Waves rose without wind, circling his boat. Shadows twisted beneath the surface, massive shapes gliding just out of sight.

Then something struck the hull.

Hard.

The boat lurched violently. Rayan nearly fell into the black water, catching himself just in time.

Another удар—stronger.

Cracks spread across the wood.

"Not now…" he muttered.

A third удар came—and the boat split.

The sea swallowed him whole.

Cold darkness wrapped around his body as he sank. He kicked wildly, fighting to reach the surface—but something brushed against his leg.

Not seaweed.

Fingers.

Rayan's heart stopped.

He twisted, trying to see—but the darkness was absolute.

Then, far below, a faint glow appeared.

A light.

It pulsed slowly, like a heartbeat.

Against every instinct, Rayan stopped struggling.

And let himself sink.

The light grew brighter as he descended, revealing shapes around him—ruins of something ancient. Towers, broken and tilted, resting on the ocean floor as if a city had been dragged beneath the waves.

His lungs burned, screaming for air.

But just as he thought he would drown—

He hit solid ground.

And breathed.

Rayan gasped, collapsing onto cold stone. Water surrounded him, yet he was somehow inside a bubble of air, standing in the middle of a submerged city.

"What… is this place?" he whispered.

A voice answered.

"You should not have come."

Rayan spun around.

A figure stood behind him, cloaked in shadows, its face barely visible.

But Rayan didn't need to see clearly.

He knew that voice.

"Aman?" he said, barely breathing.

The figure stepped forward.

It was him.

But not the brother Rayan remembered.

Aman's eyes glowed faintly, and his skin had a pale, unnatural tint. Dark veins spread across his neck like cracks in glass.

"You found it," Aman said quietly.

Rayan rushed toward him. "I've been searching for you! We have to leave—this place isn't right!"

Aman didn't move.

"We can't leave," he said.

Rayan stopped.

"What do you mean?"

Aman looked around at the ruins.

"This city… it doesn't let people go."

A deep tremor shook the ground beneath them. The water outside their air bubble rippled violently.

Rayan frowned. "Then how are we standing here?"

Aman hesitated.

"Because it's watching you," he said.

Before Rayan could respond, the glow from the depths intensified. The water beyond the ruins began to swirl, forming a massive shape—too large to comprehend.

Eyes opened within the darkness.

Dozens of them.

All staring at Rayan.

The whisper returned, louder now.

"You chose to come."

The city trembled again, cracks forming in the stone beneath their feet.

"What is that?" Rayan demanded.

Aman's expression darkened.

"It's the reason the city sank," he said. "And the reason no one returns."

The ground split open.

From below, something enormous began to rise.

A shape formed—part creature, part shadow, shifting and changing as if reality itself couldn't hold it steady.

Rayan stumbled back.

"We have to run!"

"There's nowhere to run," Aman replied.

The creature pushed closer, pressing against the invisible barrier that protected them. Its many eyes blinked in unison, locking onto Rayan.

"You are new," the voice echoed. "Untouched."

The barrier flickered.

Rayan's pulse raced. "What does it want?"

Aman looked at him—really looked.

"Not what," he said softly.

"Who."

The barrier shattered.

Water crashed inward, knocking Rayan off his feet. He was dragged into the current, spinning helplessly as the creature surged forward.

Aman grabbed his arm.

"Listen to me!" he shouted over the roar of water. "The only way out is through the heart of the city—there's a gate—"

A massive tendril shot toward them.

Aman shoved Rayan away.

"GO!"

The creature struck.

Rayan was thrown through the water, pulled by a current rushing toward a glowing structure in the distance—a gate, just as Aman had said.

He swam with everything he had.

Behind him, the city collapsed. The creature roared, its presence tearing the ruins apart as it pursued him.

The gate loomed closer.

Almost there.

Almost—

A force grabbed his leg.

Rayan screamed, kicking wildly, but the grip tightened.

He looked down.

Aman.

But his face was calm.

"Don't stop," Aman said.

"I'm not letting go again!" Rayan shouted.

"You have to," Aman replied.

The creature closed in, its eyes blazing.

Aman smiled faintly.

"You were always the braver one."

And then—

He let go.

The current surged, pulling Rayan through the gate.

Light exploded around him.

And then—

Silence.

Rayan collapsed onto the shore, coughing and gasping for air. The sun was rising, painting the sky in gold and orange.

The ocean looked normal.

Peaceful.

As if nothing had happened.

He turned back toward the horizon.

It was empty.

No darkness.

No storm.

No city.

Rayan clenched his fists.

"Aman…" he whispered.

Something brushed against his hand.

He looked down.

A small object lay in the sand.

A piece of stone, carved with the same strange symbols from the sunken city.

It pulsed faintly.

Alive.

Rayan stared at it, his heart sinking.

Because deep beneath the waves—

Something had just awakened.

And this time…

It knew his name.
