Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 : Reality glitch

Morning came.

Or at least… it looked like morning.

Sunlight streamed through the window, casting soft shadows across Aarav's room. The city outside had come back to life—cars moving, people talking, the usual noise returning.

Everything felt normal.

Too normal.

Aarav stood near the mirror, staring at his reflection.

This time, it moved exactly as he did.

Blinking. Breathing. Perfect sync.

He watched it for a few seconds longer, just to be sure.

Nothing unusual.

Still… he didn't trust it.

After everything that happened last night, "normal" didn't mean safe anymore.

His phone lay on the bed behind him.

Silent.

No messages.

No notifications.

No sign of the unknown sender.

Aarav picked it up slowly.

The chat was gone.

Completely.

No history.

No contact.

Nothing.

As if it never existed.

He checked his call logs.

Messages.

Apps.

Everything looked clean.

"Was it all in my head…?" he whispered.

But deep down, he knew it wasn't.

It felt too real.

Too detailed.

Too controlled.

He shook his head.

"I need to get out."

Maybe being around people would help. Maybe normal life would feel… real again.

The college campus was busy as usual.

Students walking in groups. Laughter. Conversations. The sound of life moving forward.

Aarav stepped inside, trying to focus on the present.

"Just a bad night," he told himself.

"Nothing more."

He walked toward his classroom.

"Hey Aarav!"

He turned.

His friend waved at him.

"Late again?" the friend joked.

Aarav forced a small smile. "Yeah… didn't sleep."

They walked together, talking casually.

At least, that's how it should have felt.

But something was… off.

There was a slight delay.

Every time his friend spoke, Aarav noticed a tiny gap between the words and the sound.

Like a video out of sync.

Barely noticeable.

But there.

Aarav frowned.

"Did you say something?" his friend asked.

"Yeah… I mean—no. It's fine," Aarav replied.

They entered the classroom.

Students were already seated.

The professor started the lecture.

Aarav tried to focus.

But the same thing kept happening.

Voices slightly delayed.

Movements just a fraction off.

Even the sound of chalk on the board came a second late.

His heartbeat started to rise again.

"This isn't normal…"

He looked around.

No one else seemed to notice.

Everyone was acting completely fine.

Listening.

Writing.

Responding.

Only him.

Only he could feel it.

He raised his hand suddenly.

"Sir…"

The professor stopped and looked at him.

"Yes, Aarav?"

Aarav hesitated.

How could he explain this?

"That… um… the audio…" he said slowly.

"What about it?" the professor asked.

"It's… delayed."

The class went silent for a second.

Then—

A few students laughed.

"Delayed?" someone whispered.

The professor frowned slightly. "Everything is fine. Maybe you didn't sleep well."

Aarav looked around again.

No one else reacted.

No confusion.

No delay.

Just him.

He slowly lowered his hand.

"Yeah… maybe."

But his mind wasn't convinced.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Later, during lunch break, Aarav sat alone.

His phone lay on the table.

He kept staring at it.

Waiting.

Nothing.

"No messages… no glitches…"

He leaned back in his chair.

"Maybe it only happens at night…"

Just as he thought that—

His phone screen flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Aarav leaned forward immediately.

The screen turned on.

But instead of the home screen—

A message appeared.

No app.

No notification.

Just text.

Directly on the screen.

"You think it's over?"

Aarav's chest tightened.

He quickly looked around.

No one noticed.

Everyone continued talking, laughing, eating.

Only his phone had changed.

Only his reality.

He tapped the screen.

Nothing happened.

Another line appeared.

"This is just the beginning."

Aarav's hands clenched.

"What do you want?" he whispered.

The text changed again.

"To see how long you last."

Aarav's breathing became uneven.

"This isn't a game…"

As if responding—

The screen flickered again.

Then returned to normal.

Home screen.

Apps.

Everything fine.

No message.

Aarav stared at it in disbelief.

"No… no, I saw that…"

He stood up suddenly, knocking his chair slightly back.

People looked at him.

"You okay?" someone asked.

Aarav nodded quickly. "Yeah… yeah."

But he wasn't okay.

Not even close.

He stepped outside the cafeteria.

The sunlight felt too bright now.

Too sharp.

He looked around the campus again.

Students walking.

Talking.

Laughing.

Everything moving perfectly.

But to him—

It didn't feel real anymore.

It felt programmed.

Controlled.

Like a simulation running smoothly for everyone else—

Except him.

Aarav took a deep breath.

"If this is a test…"

His voice was low now.

Serious.

"Then I need to understand the rules."

At that exact moment—

His phone vibrated in his pocket.

He froze.

Slowly, he pulled it out.

A new message.

Back in the chat.

The one that disappeared.

It was back.

And this time—

The sender name wasn't just "Aarav."

It said:

Aarav (Active)

His heart started pounding again.

He opened the message.

"Good. You're learning."

Aarav looked up slowly.

Scanning the crowd.

For the first time—

He wasn't just scared.

He was aware.

And somewhere…

Hidden in plain sight—

Something was watching him.

Waiting.

For his next move.
