Chapter 3 - Chapter 3-Betrayal at Home

Amina returned home that evening, exhausted from the long interview, her body aching and her mind racing. She had tried her best, spoken from the heart, and held onto hope, but the uncertainty gnawed at her. Was it enough? Would they hire her?

As she approached the house, she noticed the tense atmosphere immediately. Her stepmother stood by the gate, her eyes sharp and calculating, whispering to neighbors and relatives.

"She thinks she can succeed? Ha! Lazy girl, never did anything right. Always dreaming!" her stepmother hissed, loud enough for Amina to hear.

Amina froze, anger and shame mixing in her chest. She had worked so hard to stay honest and patient, yet her stepmother's cruel words now painted her as worthless in the eyes of the family.

She tried to ignore it, walking past without a word, but the whispers followed her like shadows. Her stomach churned. She wanted to shout, defend herself, or even leave forever—but she knew she had to stay strong.

Lina appeared at her side, her expression a mix of worry and determination. "Don't listen to her, Amina. She wants to break you down, but you can't let her win. We'll find another way."

Amina nodded, grateful for her sister's unwavering support. "You're right. I can't let her control my future. I have to fight in my own way."

That night, after dinner, Lina secretly brought out a laptop. "I've been searching online jobs and freelance opportunities. You can apply while we wait for the interview results. Even if this one fails, there's always another door."

Amina's eyes glistened with gratitude. "You're amazing, Lina. I don't know what I'd do without you."

Together, they spent hours typing applications, drafting cover letters, and polishing resumes. Amina felt a renewed sense of purpose. Every click, every email sent, was a small victory against the shadow her stepmother cast.

Just as she was about to rest, Amina's phone buzzed. A new email. Her heart skipped a beat as she read:

"Congratulations ! You have been shortlisted for a prestigious position. Please attend an interview next week."

Her chest swelled with hope, but then a cold shiver ran down her spine. She knew her stepmother had already noticed the email.

She could see the plotting in her stepmother's sharp gaze even through the screen of her own imagination.

"What if she ruins it before I even get there?" Amina whispered, fear creeping into her voice.

Lina held her hands firmly. "No matter what she does, we'll find a way. You're stronger than she thinks."

That night, sleep came reluctantly. Amina lay awake, imagining the possibilities and the obstacles. Every plan her stepmother could devise, every betrayal she might face, swirled in her mind. But beneath it all was a quiet flame of determination that refused to die.
