Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Battle of Red Oak

The vampires hit the first line like a wave.

They were fast, faster than anything we had trained against, their claws and teeth tearing through the wolves who met them head-on. But we were ready. The first line was a trap, wolves trained to give ground, to lure the vampires deeper, to draw them into the killing field we had prepared.

They took the bait.

The ground erupted beneath them. Witch-chains snapped up from the earth, binding legs, arms, throats. Blades flashed in the dawn light, cutting through the trapped creatures, reducing them to ash and bone.

The old vampire screamed. It was not a sound of pain, but of rage. It had been hunting wolves for centuries, and it had forgotten that wolves could fight back.

"Hold the line!" I shouted. "Don't let them regroup!"

The second wave came. The vampires had learned, spreading out, avoiding the traps, flanking our positions. But the wolves were ready. Renn's squad hit them from the east, blades flashing, teeth tearing. Sera's hunters dropped from the trees, knives finding hearts, throats, spines.

The old vampire stepped forward. It was tired of watching its children die. It wanted to end this itself.

"Kael!" it roared. "Face me, cub. Face me and die."

I stepped out of the line, my blade raised, my heart pounding in my chest. This was the moment. The moment I had been training for since I opened my eyes in this life.

The vampire charged.

It was faster than anything I had faced, its claws reaching for my throat, its fangs bared for the kill. But I was faster. I had the wolf in my blood, the system in my soul, the memory of a life that had already ended once.

I met it blade to claw, the impact jarring my arm, the shockwave sending snow flying. It pressed its advantage, driving me back, its strength overwhelming. But I had trained for this. I had trained to be faster, to be smarter, to be the wolf who did not break.

I ducked under its swing, the witch-chain snapping from my wrist, wrapping around its throat. It hissed, clawing at the metal, but the magic held. The symbols blazed white-hot, burning into its flesh.

"You think this will hold me?" it snarled.

"I think," I said, driving my blade into its chest, "it will hold you long enough."

The blade found its heart. The vampire screamed, a sound that tore through the forest, through the sky, through the very fabric of the world. And then it crumbled, ash scattering on the wind, its army falling with it.

I collapsed to my knees, my blade falling from my hand, my body screaming with exhaustion. Around me, the pack was cheering, howling, crying. We had won. Against all odds, we had won.

Renn appeared at my side, his face streaked with blood and ash. "You did it."

"We did it," I said. "All of us."

Sera dropped down beside me, her knives still wet. "The vampires are broken. The ones who ran won't come back. Not for a long time."

I nodded, too tired to speak. The sun was rising, painting the snow gold and red, the colors of victory and sacrifice. We had lost wolves. Good wolves. Wolves I had trained, fought beside, loved. Their bodies lay among the ash, their souls running with the moon.

But we had won. And that was enough.

The pack gathered that night around the great oak. Fires were lit, stories were told, names were spoken. The wolves who had fallen were honored, their spirits called home, their memories held close.

I stood at the edge of the firelight, watching my pack heal, and felt something I had not felt in two lives.

Peace.

The war was not over. There were other packs, other territories, other battles to fight. The vampires would return, in time. But for now, for this moment, the Red Oak Pack was safe. And I had kept my promise.

I pressed my palm to the bark of the oak, feeling the ancient pulse beneath my fingers. The heartbeat of the pack, steady and strong.

I did it, I thought. I kept them alive.

The oak did not answer. But somewhere in the depths of the forest, a wolf howled. And another answered. And another.

We had won.

I opened my eyes. The moon was full, silver and bright, and the pack was watching me. Not with fear, not with doubt, but with hope.

"We have much work to do," I said. "The vampires will return. The other packs will need us. There are wolves out there who are alone, afraid, waiting for someone to lead them." I looked at my pack, my wolves, my family. "But for tonight, we rest. Tonight, we remember the wolves we lost. Tonight, we are alive."

The wolves howled. And I, Kael, Wolf Lord of the Red Oak Pack, howled with them.
